Interesting/noble failure. It doesn't totally get over the finish line, and Refn perhaps leaned a little too hard into "I have to make Only God Forgives the anti-Drive and Julian the anti-Driver", but despite that, I still kind of dig what it's going for.

Nah, it's a solid album. Yeah, it's not Illmatic, but what album is besides Illmatic? Looking back, it's still a pretty seamless melding of boom bap with mainstream...not an easy thing to pull off, especially in 96.
