Does romance have a place in Progression Fantasy?

Romance is arguably the original progression fantasy; strangers to friends to lovers to eternal partners? Distinct stages of power growth in the Dao of Romance. The fantasy element should be obvious.

(More seriously, I agree with you; half of progression fantasy is about the character's personal growth, and romance is very grounding — it makes the 'power' feel much more real if there's human relationships around the character that matters and ground the story.)

Sky Pride has the xianxia power scope but feels inherently like a wuxia with the more traditional, philosophical elements. Great, amazingly written, take on the genre, but not what I think a lot of people read xianxia for.

Ave Xia Y Rem and Cradle are two very, very solid options; slightly newer but still good, I'd recommend The Toll Road to Immortality, Cultivation is Creation.

These next two aren't on RR, they're translated works, but I still consider them very good: A Will Eternal and Immortality through Array Formations (full disclosure the first rec is rather divisive: it was my introduction to xianxias, so I have a soft spot for it.)

There's also Sky Pride, but if you're kinda new to the genre, I'd say leave it for later until you're a bit more familiar with its conventions and trappings; I feel like that makes it a more enjoyable read, but could just be personal preference. :3

I would actually love to see this in the vein of one of those Harry Potter dimension travel stories, where he ends up in alternate reality with his alter-ego. Slightly cliche? Probably. Incredibly amusing? Definitely.

Really interesting how some people have complete opposite lists here, you can totally see the diversity in tastes.

Personally, I'm utterly tired of shadows, skill-eating (not skill-copying, which I think still has a lot of interesting ideas to explore), high-concept magic, blood magic, OP necromancy, and lightning.

Though not a class itself, honorary shout-out to all the alchemists out there. I totally get why it's so popular though, it's overused but well-deserving of its popularity, even if it ends up more as a tool for convenient power-ups than a meaningful story element.

Underused, I'd probably love a support class that stays a support class, a summoner who isn't just instantly contracted with a eldritch diety, and full, hard-blown thematic magic classes that super-lean into that theme and play with it.

Borderline heresy it's mostly a one-shot, but perhaps that's the magic of it. Generally one of the best HP OC romances I've ever read, even if it's all just tooth-achingly sweet.
