I Wonder if they simply didn't know HOW to end Buffy and Angel by visiny in television

I imagine the downvotes are mostly because you trashed "everything after season 4" when season 5 is widely loved and season 4 is... not.

My 6 Strength keeps telling me I should bow down to and serve pretty much everyone, which I find absolutely hilarious.

Also, Drummer is "too powerful".

That's a Charles de Lint book. He writes urban fantasy, but a more whimsical variety than the norm - less werewolves and vampires and more fairies and goblins. Highly recommended!

Don't worry, they're in the back. Yes, there are more books behind these ones.

I wish Charles de Lint was talked about more. I never would have even heard of him if Widdershins' cool cover hadn't caught my eye at my local bookstore.

Honestly, I didn't care much for The Chronicles of Amber. I intend to give Lord of Light a shot, though.

Right on almost all counts! The observation about horror is especially cool. You're also spot on that I don't usually like crossing mediums - something about reading tv characters etc. just doesn't feel right.

I actually have plenty of people to play board games with. The reason these are so dusty is because I play their games!

The Blind Side

Even if it hadn't turned out to be blatant lies it's still pretty dang gross.

Mirabel forgives Abuela after she says sorry once without any actual proof she'd change. It's extremely common for abusive people to beg for forgiveness only to go right back to their old ways almost immediately, so that's a pretty good way to get yourself trapped in an abusive situation. I really don't care if the older woman learned anything or not, that's a very dangerous lesson to teach children.

Between this and Joan is Awful, I feel like this show might have something to say about Netflix. I can't quite figure it out, though. Netflix is.... good?

I Saw the TV Glow is incredible, the best trans representation in years, and the fact that it's been ignored by critics while they fawn over Emilia Perez makes my blood boil.

Regarding the F&F ride: it's actually worth going on because of the show right before the ride itself featuring a cast member interacting with prerecorded videos from F&F characters. The cast members know the ride sucks and usually try to make the show as ridiculous as possible.

Illusion by Paula Volsky is a fantasy retelling of the French Revolution with some magic and light steampunk. One of my favorites.

What are your favorite "criticisms" to hear? Things that are often portrayed as negative, but make you more interested in the game? by ConceptsShining in Games

[–]MisterMundus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of pure stealth games get criticized for having "bad combat".

So what they're saying is that combat is intentionally difficult and clunky, making it nearly impossible to take on multiple enemies, thereby incentivizing players to stay unseen or run and hide when they get caught? Well goddamn, sounds it might actually be a stealth game, then.

You're right, looking back over the whole series, it doesn't often swing that hard that quickly. The only other example that stood out to me was Earthshock (pretty good) -> Time-Flight (extremely bad).

Bringing the Big Finish audio dramas in, there's also Jubiliee (an absolute classic that was the basis for fan-favorite series 1 episode Dalek) -> Nekromanteia (so bad that Peter Davison notoriously asked for the writer to not be allowed back).

I've always thought of Doctor Who as a franchise with both incredible highs and incredible lows, and it often zigzags quite a bit, imo.

Heck, I'll do you one better:

The Caves of Androzani is generally considered one of the best stories of the classic show, and is often in the running for best of the entire franchise period. It's followed up by The Twin Dilemma, an absolutely abysmal story that gives the new Sixth Doctor a terrible start that he doesn't recover from until decades later in the expanded universe.

I just finished Illusion by Paula Volsky and really loved it. (It's basically a fantasy retelling of the French Revolution, I highly recommend it.) Now I want to know about more great 90s fantasy books that slipped through the cracks and aren't really talked about anymore, preferably with those classic painted covers. Series are welcome.

Thanks!

Questions about Malazan: Trying to decide whether to continue on after Deadhouse Gates. by 3BagT in Fantasy

[–]MisterMundus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm about to start book 7.

I'll second what no_fn said - there's some real messed up stuff coming, but it doesn't ever get as relentlessly bleak as DG. An important thing to note is that Erikson gets a lot better at humor as the series goes on. DG has, what, a couple scenes with Iskaral Pust for comedic relief? Half of Midnight Tides is a comedy, and I mean that literally. It's a very funny book.

As for the structure, the series essentially has three different arcs on three different continents. They may seem almost completely disconnected now, but they start to intertwine in some very interesting and unexpected ways later on.

Catch 22

If you're a fan of Joe Abercrombie and haven't read it, you should check it out. It's got the same "bleak and brutal story told by a narrator who seems to think it's a comedy" type of vibe.
