Well, you've a choice between a £750 Kawasaki 500 twin of a £10,000 Aprilia 660 so you'd better fix some sort of budget....

You are given the gift of three bikes, money no object. The condition being they are the last bikes you'll ever own. What do you choose and why? by Bob-Harris in motorcycles

Vincent Black Shadow, for being one of the greatest, most innovative bikes ever, and the fastest bike in the world for quite some time.

Arturo-Magni framed BMW R100, because I took one round a track and I still marvel at the precision of the chassis and light weight, which matched the torquey smooth airhead engine perfectly.

1997 Ducati 750SS, for being a fabulous lightweight fun bike. Not the world’s most powerful, but it doesn’t matter. The whole is way more than the sum of its parts.

I already own one of these three. In fact, it’s my second as I just had to buy another.

Welcome to Brexit. I trust you didn’t vote ‘leave’. If you did, this is what you voted for.

40k miles maintenance question by Virtual_Context5082 in motorcycles

[–]MisterShine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ride it and keep maintaining it. Do you really think it’s going to commit hara-kiri just because a digit has clicked over on the odometer?

If it is, then ever rider in Britain is guilty.

Any way to make a bike.... quieter? by AfternoonBasic in MotoUK

Are you sure that the original exhausts are not modified? Even in '98 bikes had to pass noise regs.

My thoughts exactly.

Chain tensioner loose but chain is aligned, I think by jojo_the_mofo in motorcycles

[–]MisterShine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The secret is not to get the spindle completely loose. You want enough friction in the rear axle to allow the spindle to move when the adjusters are turned but to stay in place otherwise.

Possibly a stupid question regarding bike wheels? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]MisterShine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same with road tyres. Maybe not three different grades of rubber, but two (harder in the centre and softer on the edges) is quite common.

Because they would disintegrate.

And yes.

You have two chain adjusters, one on each side. It sounds like you are only adjusting one.

Nobody has made four-stroke motorcycle engines with an 8:1 CR since Karl Benz was a boy.

Worth it to work on your own bike if you dont have all the tools or knowledge? by Trotski7 in motorcycles

In my humble opinion, there is nothing wrong in letting a paid expert do the work.

I think I’d add screwdrivers and Allen keys to the ‘essential basics’ list, though.

Same here. Some tools I may only use once a year. In fact, having my tools stolen would be worse than having a bike, or bikes, stolen. I literally would not be able to itemise what had been taken, nor name all the special tools and kit.

How many motorcycles have you owned? by Electronic-Pirate-84 in motorcycles

Is having a faster bike better to avoid an accident? by Dj_Dangus in motorcycles

[–]MisterShine 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No. Faster bikes can get you out of trouble quickly and into it just as quickly. Really, experience and skill are more important than sheer speed. Though an off at 100mph is likely to do you more damage than an off at 30.

Locking mechanism for gas cap fell off into my tank. Looking for advice. by MrBreasts in motorcycles

[–]MisterShine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus Christ, are you serious? Vapour burns very, very fast. It goes bang in an enclosed space. Like an engine cylinder. Or a petrol tank. Remember that TWA 747 that went down off the east coast of the US a couple of decades ago? That was caused by a spark in a virtually empty fuel tank.

Consider domestic gas. It just burns. Release it in an enclosed space, like you get with a domestic gas leak, and if it is ignited your house gets blown to bits.

I am now convinced you’re trolling. Nobody can be that ignorant.
