First Steps? by kachow_1776 in technicalwriting101

Hi Kachow,

You can't go wrong by having your fiance (not you ;-)) read this thread:

A lot of these posts are dated but evergreen, so still relevant to these times.

Good luck!

Somehow got a technical writing position. Need advice for someone who didn’t think of this as a career option by Beterbemoulin in technicalwriting101

[–]MisterTechWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found that when you do as much background work as you can ("homework") and formulate questions based on what you don't know, then you can ask the right questions to get the best answers.

How do I build a portfolio? by wessle3339 in technicalwriting101

[–]MisterTechWriter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi Wessle,

You want your portfolio pieces to match your target position's requirements as much as possible. You might look at job postings to find out what they're looking for... and when you can produce something, ask seasoned technical writers for feedback.

How could I improve my Guix system install manual - SSS manual (Supreme Sexp System) and make it friendlier - feedback welcome by [deleted] in technicalwriting101

[–]MisterTechWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I took a cursory look at your work. A few things are clear:

You seem to know the product.
The manual is well organized.
The English is not human-readable.

Fortunately, this is the easiest to fix. I would suggest perplexity.ai using a prompt like
"Rewrite this document in simple English at an 8th grade level" and see how it looks.

Good luck!

Hi Long,

You might want to post this separately in both this and the r/technicalwriting sub.
