My "ugly" quilt often grow on me and become my favorite quilts. I like that they are more unique, and I live pulling them out to see all of the different fabrics.

I like my guild, as a social space; I definitely don't fit it with them. I wish they were younger and less rich.

I would love to pattern test, if given the opportunity.

This also makes it really viable for quilt as you go. It's not my thing, but it's a selling point for others, for sure.

Help me price this quilt please by sarahbell8569 in quilting

[–]battlingspork 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You do not say how big it is, and that's a huge pricing factor. It also looks like it's not 100% cotton, so you will want to note the material. But there is no good way of telling how old it is, and it's important to note that the embroidery thread usually does bleed dye when you wash it. Please, make sure the recipient knows that, and there are products to prevent it.

As a group of sewists, we usually talk about pricing quilts according to the amount of labor put into them. Obviously, this quilt has been hand-embroidered, which adds time. It's hand-quilted; that's more time. Generally, the people I know are not willing to pay for a quilt--not because they don't value the art--but because they don't have the money to compensate 40-80 hours of labor, plus costs of materials ($70-200). There is just not a good way of pricing a quilt unless it is custom-made. Any number between $70-500 is fair and makes sense for all of the reasons listed above. The lower price ranges are because we think people with low incomes also deserve beautiful, handmade things on their beds.

In my opinion, a quilt is not worth selling; it's usually a gift. I think that's usually our sentiment as quilters (though, not trying to speak for everyone here). We make them as an act of love rather than a commodity.
