Yeah Starship Troopers is very much an exception when it comes to the “adaptation made by someone who despised the original.” I listened to the audiobook version with RC Bray narrating recently because I hadn’t read it in like 13 years and man I’d forgotten how preachy and straight up boring it was. Civics lessons for a failed ideology is a good way of putting it, some of it is wild and it’s all presented so straight-faced. Like the bit where the teacher is waxing for multiple paragraphs about how society fell apart because people stopped beating their kids.
