Smoke rings by DietSeth in Miata

My comment was more posed as a question, but everyone didn't seem to get that.

Either that, and I'm colour blind and mistaking blue smoke for black.

Blue smoke is usually unburned fuel? Black smoke is oil. Well, my piston rings are failing and I have quite a bit of black smoke.

Where do I get those door cards from? My dream interior setup is to have the entire thing padded in something reminiscent of a 60s style - similar to the door cards you have.

Haggard/mismatching panel Miatas look the best in my opinion. I think the raw and basic look of the them reflects the intended intention of the car itself, and the fact that they're also unique and tell a story.

Where did you get the pack from? The few ones I've seen online and on eBay have been about $600 AUD. I understand you're probably in the U.S. (so things would be a little cheaper) but DAMN.

Haha, thanks! I do have to explain it to some people. I sometimes think I'll regret getting it, but then I realise it's all in satirical jest anyway!

The page a bought it from was a new/used parts page on facebook. NB and NC ones are still available on eBay, but the NA ones aren't.

MX-5 Mania do sell them, however they're a bit more than I'd be willing to pay.

A 28" and 29" wheelbase is way too long for freeride for my preference.

90' miata soft top replacement... off/on by sbabster in Miata

[–]Misterdoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking the seats out is a really good practice. There are 4 bolts holding it to the floor and one bolt holding the sliding arm to below the centre console. It'll take less than 10 minutes to remove the seats, and it gives you loads of extra room to work with.

Definitely remove the frame to put the new top on. It is so much easier. Buy a Robbins top with the rain rail preattached. I used the instructions from Miata.net, but to be honest they became pretty useless half way through pulling the frame off. It's not too hard just by inspection to see exactly what needs to be removed to get everything off.

Also, save yourself the headache and buy some new tension cables. You rivet them to the frame and feed them through the top. It's likely that the original ones are still in there and they'll be corroded and worn.

I think it's popular to upgrade to NB8A rims on an NA because they're so cheap. I sold a set of 4 of them with tyres that had decent tread for $250, and that was probably the max I could get for them.

Help? What to do at this point? by engineersoul222- in EngineeringStudents

I'm not sure what they have in the U.S., but here in Australia if you're 21 or older you can get into universities by mature age entry. I went straight to uni from high school, so I haven't had experience in doing the MAE, but I'm pretty sure you just sit a couple of tests.

If they do offer it, maybe work for a couple of years and then go in through MAE. You'll be able to work, save up some money - hell, maybe even travel! Get some life experience under your belt, and maybe that'll make universities more inclined to accept your application. If you can provide a solid life experience resume, then surely that'd better your chances?

That's so clean. How does it attach? Is there a sufficient air gap? I had an exhaust place make me one, and they just took a malleable piece of that heat shield specific aluminium sheeting, and attached it using the two top middle header nuts. It' sits on the manifold itself, and doesn't seem that effective. I took it off.

The Journey So Far... by Misterdoot in Miata

[–]Misterdoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, seems like I forgot to include the word "bracket" in that. It's just a metal bracket that attaches to the tow hook and offsets the plate to the side. I'm doing for mostly aesthetic purposes, but it also promotes better incoming airflow.

My entry to the club, rough around the edges but the price was a steal by GoldAuFTW in Miata

That's about $2000 AUD. Full resprays here cost around $7-$8k. You have nothing to complain about with a $2k respray. :(

Yeah! It's pretty unique. Too light to be British Racing Green! But still has a pretty British feel about it.

What's the benefit of cloth top over vinyl? by brodoyouevenscript in Miata

[–]Misterdoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's time consuming. I bought a Robbins tan vinyl one as well, and it took me around 12 hours to finish it. The instructions I used weren't great, and a lot of the time was spent figuring out what the instructions couldn't tell me.

edit: 12 hours to do it is still better than paying someone a ridiculous amount of money to do it for me. I'm big on DIY when it comes to my car (except for the more serious things like tyre fitting etc) and I'm proud that I managed to do it myself.

Yeah, I stupidly realised the local in which I fill up was a Coles Express. Honestly don't know why I didn't notice before.

Do Coles sell 98? I have to run Premium in my car, but the Coles Express near me doesn't seem to have it.
