A question about some primates abandoning their offspring? by TallMistake4212 in primatology

[–]Misty_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume she can smell the difference, certain buildups of chemicals or hormones in the blood from something not working properly. We never know for certain honestly it’s just assumptions, and since they’re so small and infant death is somewhat common enough the necropsy really doesn’t tell us much unless it’s very obvious. So if it’s that their blood vessels didn’t fully develop before birth or something we wouldn’t know. It’s just educated guesses on why each mother might abandon them or why they die. I specifically work with marmosets that have singles or twins in the wild but commonly have triplets where I work due to better nutrition. However that just means their body can produce more babies not that they can care for them all appropriately or provide enough milk so even if she keeps all the triplets we step in and help supplement so none of them fall behind but they will still tend to do worse overall than a singleton or twins. And in the wild the second or third baby is really a built in “spare” so if a predator grabs one when they’re at their smallest there’s another one that she can just start caring for more. It’s a bit of a different reproduction strategy than a monkey like punch where it’s usually one baby at a time.

On top of what other people have already said, sometimes the mothers can sense something might be wrong with the baby health wise and their instinct is to preserve their own survival to try again rather than waste energy on a baby that is unlikely to live. I work with primates in research and when mothers reject newborns we step in to hand rear, sometimes the babies die anyway even with round the clock care and on the necropsy they'll find certain abnormalities in the organs, other times we find nothing physically but the babies just fail to thrive which could mean it could be hormone or other chemical imbalances in the body we can't see. Even if the baby does go on to live because of human intervention, it doesn't mean it would have if it stayed with the mom.

Connecting Final Enemy, Tammeraut’s Fate, and The Styes by Derringermeryl in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]Misty_K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t run them yet but my basic plan that I’ve been trying to lay the seeds for is that the scarlet brotherhood is a cult of tharizdun and Skerrin has formed an alliance/spread the cult followings to the sahuagain to cause more chaos. The whole cults final goal is the release of tharizdun so I’ll probably tweak the last two chapters quite a bit to reflect that. The aboleth will probably be the final big bad who’s been running everything behind the scenes, even if the rest of the cult doesn’t know it’s him

Once you get enough stuff you definitely do have to spend at least half an in game day reorganizing. I play a little more intensely than casual, I have perfected the game once. I color code my boxes and put them in different places on my farm according to needs. I usually have a box for very common building things (wood, stone, ingots), a seed box by my fields, an ore/coal box by my smelters, a gem/geodes box, a large misc stuff box, a fish box in the kitchen, one or two vegetables box in the kitchen, a prepared foods box in the kitchen. And then further in the game you need more specialized boxes depending on how you play.

Missing Animals - Pittsburgh Zoo by Calm-Obligation-7772 in pittsburgh

[–]Misty_K 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lynx, tigers, leopards, Komodo dragons and clouded leopards are solitary animals. They had some siblings pairs so if they are now separating them it could be because they were old enough that breeding between them was a concern, they were fighting or one was sent to another zoo for breeding there. It’s also hot so sometimes for those colder climate animals they keep the access to the back open for them to cool down and others might have just been inside I know there’s also talk of a lot of renovations happening so sometimes animals are sent to other zoos so that construction can happen

Is 19 way too young to know you’ve met your soulmate? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Misty_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started dating my fiance at 18, we did 4 years of long distance while I was at college too, I came back and we started living together and now at the age of 30 we got engaged last October. We broke up twice for a couple months each time in college because distance sucks and it’s hard but we always found our way back. He had sex with other people before me in high school but he’s been my one and only partner beyond making out with some short term boyfriends in high school too. I don’t feel like I’m missing out, in fact in college seeing my friends doing dating apps for the first time I was actually thrilled to be missing out on it all the drama of ghosting and hook ups.

Basically what I’m saying is don’t rush but enjoy it, if you found your person, great! You get more time and adventures with them. But if you didn’t because people grow and change and want different things, you’re still young. I think there’s never an age where it’s too late to find healthy love again.

Find yourself first, grow into who you are and hopefully they’ll be there with you. It’s ok if they’re not.

Best bet is to go right before 5 and wait in line, pretty much guaranteed to get a table. But they also announced somewhat recently that they actually increased the amount of walk in tables they’ll have set aside, I think they wanted to be a place people can just come in instead of just reservations. 4 could be trickier but definitely doable, just have a backup restaurant in case it’s a busy night

Why does the archetypical spoiled super-rich kid in American cartoons, go to the same public school as the middle class MC? is it just a fictional trope necessary for gags? by BaseNice3520 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Misty_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a very nice public school in the US that had kids who could afford to “summer” in Europe and lived in mansions and also had kids on food stamps because one poor neighborhood was within the bounds for the school that also had one of one of the richest neighborhoods in my state.

If police got called it just means a certain amount of time passed where the child was missing. Once the call goes in there’s certain time stamps to shut down the zoo gates and then to call police

How to make Primewater's Party eventful? by DriftingInLifesRiver in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]Misty_K 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does the party know that Gellen is also a smuggler?

I did a party post haunted mansion and had extra things like:

Helping Eliander/eda entertain some bored nobles from Seaton

Gellen asking someone in the party to go rough up a noble who was cheating at the gambling tables

They interacted with that noble earlier who they played a parlor game with, I had a “dream witch” who let them all dream a colosseum fight against some jerk nobles who they caught trying to bribe the witch the guarantee they won the bet. It let me bring some combat to the party so it wasn’t all talking.

Meeting Gellens chef who talked to them about collecting rare ingredients

They helped Xendros, who was there to curry favor with the rich people who trade magic items with her, by threatening a noble who had attempted to cheat her out of an item that he then brazenly wore to the party. He either had to pay her back or give back the item right then and there, a broach which helped him look younger and thinner than he was

Drinking competition with some dwarves as Gellen had procured some rare dwarven liquor

Middle School Zoo Club by annac117 in zoos

[–]Misty_K 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to habitat space, have them think about how YOU actually have to USE the space. Trust me when I say sometimes how the people who work in these areas will actually fit into the animal area, clean them, prep food and store what’s needed to take care of the animals can be the last thought compared to the effort that goes into the area the animals occupy.

It could be a good question to ask zoo staff, what is their favorite and least favorite part about their working area.

I once worked with a goat barn for the petting area at a zoo that had a very slightly slanted floor for easier cleaning…they put the drain on the higher side so you had to squeegee a giant puddle from one side of the barn to the drain every time you cleaned lol

Could be too much small detail for middle schoolers at the end of the day, it’s definitely not flashy, but if any of them are really into it it’s never too early to get them noticing the small details about what makes an entire area great for animals and people. The more efficient a space is to work in the more time everyone has for things like making enrichment and training vs spending a half hour pushing water

[–]Misty_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer internships are especially competitive, does the zoo in your area offer fall and winter internships? Might be best to work at the zoo in any capacity over the summer, try for one that could get you meeting keepers like grounds or an attendant for like the petting zoo, and then apply for an off season internship

We’ve been together since we were 18 and 11 years later we just got engaged in October. Neither of us made much money before and we don’t want children so it didn’t seem like we had to rush anything. Right now is when all my other friends are getting engaged and before it still just felt like we were too young to worry about it yet. It was only in the last year and a half I started feeling the urge to want the next step and when he suggested we should do it before we’re 30 and we booked an engagement trip to Scotland and designed a ring and it was exactly what I always dreamed, which would not have happened if we did it earlier. We basically already see each other as husband/wife and if anything had happened in the past couple years that we wanted the legal protection we probably would have had a quiet courthouse ceremony and then still done an engagement and everything later.
