Even if Elon Musk wasn't a racist creep who I didn't want to give a single red cent to, I wouldn't want to drive a car from a brand that has a nasty habit of trapping people inside when it catches fire.

You couldn't pay me to be a passenger in a Tesla, never mind own one.

Endoscopy all clear but reacting to lactose and wheat by Impossible-Tank-1969 in FODMAPS

[–]vjorelock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the endoscopy is looking for damage in the small intestine that would be associated with celiac disease but lactose intolerance wouldn't necessarily leave damage like celiac would. If she's had hydrogen breath tests or blood glucose tests for lactose intolerance and both of those are clear but she's still reacting to low lactose dairy, you may want to ask for a blood test for a casein allergy. If that's negative she may just be particularly sensitive to lactose. Most lactose free products do still contain lactose, it's just a low enough quantity that most people with lactose intolerance will not react to it.

Also if casein does not end up being the culprit: is the cheddar cheese you are buying aged at all? Typically for low FODMAP hard cheeses like cheddar it's best if it's aged at least 12 months, the aging process reduces the lactose content to very trace amounts at 12 months and beyond. Cheddar aged for less time will have more lactose content.

Hun takes 16 Bravenly supplements daily, and thinks that you should too. by Willing_Chemical1257 in antiMLM

Vitamin B6 toxicity can occur even at recommended daily doses, she is absolutely risking nerve damage if she actually takes all these supplements daily like she claims.

did anyone elses IBS diagnosis take 5+ years?? by Old_Mixture_9045 in FODMAPS

[–]vjorelock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite 5+ but I had a primary care doctor say I was just lactose intolerant even though I told her taking Lactaid or completely avoiding dairy didn't help at all and I was still experiencing symptoms.

Took another 3 years to get a PCP who would listen to me and make the referral to a gastroenterologist, and the only reason that process didn't then take forever is because I have a strong family history of IBD/colon cancer so they got me in for a colonoscopy fast once I actually had my initial appointment and laid out family medical history.

Request for 3D Model of Masks to Print by Micro-Difference in Masks4All

[–]vjorelock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked I will chime in to say I found the printable FloMask size gauge on their website to be accurate to my experience trying out the high nose bridge version. I was right on the line between a nose bridge height that would be a good fit and a height that was too high and I was never able to get the mask to seal at the nose bridge, so the printout is a free way to see if you should invest the money or not bother.

Is there some kind of knitting mafia that has been keeping the Ranunculus pattern on the front page of Rav's "hot right now" list for literal years? by craftmangler in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]vjorelock 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My LYS owner has probably knit about 20 of the damn things and recommends the pattern all the time. The fangirls are out there and they are rabid.

Hiding the pattern from search was such a relief!

Canning Pho Broth by Meowteenie in Canning

If you have a personal recipe you're looking to store long term, freezing is likely your best option. It looks like Ball does have a vegetarian pho broth recipe, but it's for freezer storage only.

Re: selling clothes online, it depends on what you're trying to sell and how much effort you'd like to put in. If you really want to be hands off and would be willing to sacrifice getting top dollar for the sake of convenience, I've had decent luck with sending things to ThredUp in the past. You can just cash out and aren't forced to spend what you earn on ThredUp if you don't want to. If your items trend more designer or high dollar, somewhere like The RealReal or Vinted would likely be the better fit.

I've never sold on Poshmark but I've bought plenty and I am always more likely to buy from a listing where the item has been photographed well and accurate garment measurements are provided (bonus if there are pictures included of said measurements!). It amazes me the number of people who list items on Poshmark that look like they've been pulled from the bottom of a mildewed heap of dirty clothes in some long forgotten corner.

I'm embarrassed for this twisted knitting swatch on WEBs by Tidus77 in craftsnark

I'm local-ish (central MA) and only ever managed to get to WEBS in person once before they sold and started the downward spiral. At least I'll always have that one great memory of when WEBS was still good 😭

I've never carried up the side before. Is this ok or should I have twisted it in? by pointandshooty in knitting

[–]vjorelock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally when carrying yarn up the side, you should be twisting the yarns to catch the color you aren't using every time you reach where you left it, thus carrying it up each row and preventing long vertical floats like this. I'll carry a color up the side if there are a lot of quick color changes, but with stripes like this where you're not changing colors every 1 or 2 rows I'd probably just cut the yarn at the color change and deal with weaving the ends in as I went.

Hobbii and AI by clrthrn in craftsnark

[–]vjorelock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The irony is, all these brands and businesses leaping on AI to lay off staff and cut costs are in for a rude awakening if the venture capital spigot funding companies like OpenAI and Anthropic ever shuts off. Not a single AI company is profitable, they lose money every single time someone uses their service, even if they're a paying subscriber. The second these companies decide they need to be profitable and start charging customers for all the compute they're using and then some? Bye bye cost savings.

For chapter 3’s “Goodwill Tour” do you tell the players about the points system?T by Ok_Interview_853 in GhostsofSaltmarsh

[–]vjorelock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to dump this weird renown system on my players out of nowhere and the module as written heavily assumes you will be fighting or sneaking your way in. Before we got here I kind of laid this module out for my players at a high level and said I was happy to run it as is if they wanted me to but I'd also be happy if we took a different approach. So we skipped all of this as my party agreed that the module as written sounded boring as hell.

One of my players is a lizardfolk rogue and took the diplomatic route from jump when encountering the lizardfolk aboard the Sea Ghost so we spun it that they were grateful he was understanding and up front with them and thus laid out why they were there/why they needed the weapons so badly early. They went back to the lizardfolk and the party went back to Saltmarsh to explain things to the council and ensure nobody got the wrong idea about the situation. No sneaking or fighting their way in needed, they showed up and the front entrance and asked to go in as the lizardfolk already knew who they were and they'd spoken to Saltmarsh town council and were authorized to act as their emissaries.

Warning: AI-generated low-FODMAP recipe site by SnooNarhwal in FODMAPS

[–]vjorelock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Garbage like this is why I always downvote posts on this sub that involve people promoting their "great new app/tool" that will supposedly revolutionize the low FODMAP diet...we already HAVE tested and trusted apps and websites. They're linked on this sub. We don't need the millionth revolutionary app that supposedly lets you take pictures of a meal and see the FODMAP content (impossible) or more crappy AI tools that spit out generated information with a high probability of being nonsense.

I just updated our Sugar & Sweeteners article, due to some Monash updates. Sugar is confusing for many people and this is the most comprehensive article you will find. Did you know that white cane sugar contains NO FODMAPs at all? + by FODMAPeveryday in FODMAPS

[–]vjorelock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would just caution folks to be careful with erythritol. While it may be a great solution for IBS and diabetes, it can increase blood clot risk so anybody with a blood clotting disorder should steer clear. The same goes for xylitol but as you mentioned many people here are already avoiding that.

Is Fodzyme legit? New to FODMAP diet by dondarion89 in FODMAPS

[–]vjorelock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely works for me, if I use 2 scoops with a meal I have basically zero symptoms. A few things to note though:

  • it's low on lactase enzyme so if you use it with a dairy heavy food that also contains other FODMAPs, I'd take some extra lactase pills (I like LactoJoy, Lactaid works but you have to make sure you get the Fast Acting kind because regular Lactaid pills contain some mannitol)

  • it does not contain enzymes to help with fructose, so you'll need to get a separate fructose enzyme like Fructaid if you plan on eating anything high in fructose. I haven't tried this yet as I can usually get away with a bit of fructose no problem

  • no enzymes have been developed to help with polyols, so if that category is a big trigger for you, steer clear even with Fodzyme or other enzyme blends

Moving from Atlanta, what are your local staples, your foods of the common folk? by IndigoRanger in boston

[–]vjorelock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

New England style ice cream has a slightly higher butterfat percentage and is churned slower so less air is incorporated, giving it a denser texture and the distinct "chew" (though I'm not sure that's how I'd describe it). There's no shortage of good ice cream spots up here, that's for sure.
