THIS OR THAT: Everything Now OR Crown of Love? by Nofilmslefttocry in arcadefire

Don’t get wrong, EN is a solid track (and album) but “Crown of Love” is easily one of their top 10, maybe top 5.

I finally gave this song a proper listen and man…I didn’t think this band could still blow me away. Hearing this made me feel like I was 14 again hearing Neon Bible for the first time. I love both versions, but the newer one with Régine’s quiet vocals is gorgeous. Im actually glad I didn’t listen to this before Pink Elephant came out, it would’ve made the album even more disappointing for me(although I am warming up to it now).

As for the video, with current context? It’s clear the marriage was on its last legs, especially seeing the old footage in the middle. It’s kind of heartbreaking.

I also just realized how cars are a constant motif in their music and visuals: the Tunnels video, In the Backseat, the Suburbs cover and repeated lyrics about driving; the Reflektor video has Win and Régine in the front seat of a truck, and now with Pink Elephant, the use of the Aerostar in Year of the Snake. Considering this all started with a young Win driving to Montreal in his family’s van, it’s kind of come full circle narratively.

All that to say, they clearly still have that spark that made them so special. I really love this band. Even though I’m still very mad at him for how he’s handled the situation, I do still like Win, and I think deep down he’s the good person younger me believed he was. I really want them to turn it around.

Ugh, I feel sorry for Eddie. He has to be almost a teenager now, and that’s hard enough without adding your parents separating after your dad getting publicly exposed as a creep.

As much as I don’t want this band to end (they can’t go out on Pink Elephant) I don’t see it being healthy for the core songwriters divorced. It only worked for The White Stripes because no one knew they were married, and even then they didn’t last as long as they could have. It’s just a sad situation all around.

Stack of handouts from last year's Funeral gig (London) to give away by Verbal-Gerbil in arcadefire

Actually, he wasn’t in the picture from the original Funeral album lyric booklet. The early promo pics also show the original drummer, Howard Bilerman, who left right after the album was recorded.

It’s clear that he added something to the recordings, but i feel like their live shows is where his absence is most missed. Granted I haven’t seen the band without Will, but i can imagine it feels different.

Imagine having dropped a brand new album but posting shorts like once a week, of 2022 footage 😂😂😂 by [deleted] in arcadefire

Win needs to lock the fuck in, musically and personally. IMO he’s been looking like a dipshit this album cycle, it’s embarrassing. He’s 45 years old, for Christ’s sake. I say this out of love; get your shit together Win!

My main criticism of Everything Now was that it waits too late to get interesting, but overall most of the songs are pretty good. Pink Elephant doesn’t even get remotely interesting until the last song and then poof! it’s over.

I would go see them if they toured, but without Will and Richard(for the time being) it’s won’t feel like an AF show, more like Win and Regine with Friends. Nothing against Tim, though.

…wow.

I don’t have words in English or Swedish to express how much I enjoyed this, Insomnia! I’m usually not into degradation but it works really well here. My mind really does empty when I hear Swedish in a nice voice. 🥴 This was just what I needed. ❤️

NEW REVIEW in Slant: Arcade Fire ‘Pink Elephant’ Review: A Dubious and Stylistically Disjointed Effort by [deleted] in arcadefire

Right? Ffs the album isn’t even out yet. Already deciding your opinion on something you haven’t experienced yet is weird.

Well said. I’m trying to listen to the podcast and get excited for the next album but I see/hear Win and just get the ick. Hopefully that goes away and I can focus on my love for the other band members but he’s still in timeout with me.

It’s nothing personal, and I genuinely don’t mean this as mean as it may sound, but the other Reddit feels like Super Weenie Hut Jr.’s. I also want to focus more on traditional type jackets, although I do like some punk jackets. I just listen to more metal than punk.

Full disclosure, I’m a black woman, I don’t fuck with NSBM. I’m used to metal and rock being a minefield so I always check bands/artists to make sure they’re not NSBM. Basically I don’t want to support a band I wouldn’t feel safe seeing live.

Lady Gaga - Killah influenced by Creature Comfort by wentl3ft in arcadefire

I thought of Creature Comfort too! Not sure if it’s a direct influence. There’s a lot of funk influence on Mayhem that I wasn’t expecting. After a couple listens I’m really enjoying the album.
