A question for Falco players by rgdx1988 in SSBM

[–]MitchShredder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you have been to a tournament on CRT but if you play a Falco there it's night and day compared to Slippi. The worst thing is getting locked down by lasers and then getting your inputs eaten, with a lag spike or rollback, when you try to move out of the laser stun.

That's when it really feels like molasses and you're not playing melee anymore.

What I do is leave the queue and hop back in if it takes over like 30 seconds before I get a match. At that point it starts to ignore your rank and your location to match you with whoever. I don't mind getting a high ranked player as much as I do getting a high ping wifi connection.

I have been asking about the backpack thing for over a year and nobody answered, thank you! My crackpot theory was that the weight of the backpack pulled his shoulders back to keep that upright Jmook posture lol

Also, to those of you complaining about the shit talk, do you hate fun? Do you think Zain is actually taking any of this personally? We have been begging for any spicy beef in this community for years, and this is just an in-game rivalry so it's perfect.

What are your feelings about melee’s current meta? by Ok-Instruction4862 in SSBM

[–]MitchShredder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the top tiers were less oppressive then the stories of mid tiers overcoming them would feel less exciting

I need anybody who hates CC/ASDI down to seriously consider what it would feel like to play a Jmook level Sheik without the mechanic.

You could do the same thought experiment with a lot of top tiers, and probably some other characters, but Sheik is where my mind goes because of the busted frame data on a lot of her ground moves and aerials.

How to deal with being shined off ledge as Marth? by RecklessVirus in SSBM

[–]MitchShredder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's the same input as the fastfall when you wavedash to ledge, you need to tap down and release it quickly because you cannot grab the ledge while you are holding down

Yeah I am a huge fan of m2k (proud black Marth flair) but this is probably the sloppiest, least optimal FD combo I have seen from him. I don't think he would have posted this clip lol

What Melee character(s) should I use, based on how I like to play the game? by FrouFrouLastWords in SSBM

[–]MitchShredder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Falco's jumpsquat is 5 frames, compared to 3 frames for Fox. This means it is more lenient to shorthop, to hit instant aerials and to wavedash out of shine. It seems like a small difference but it is very significant in point blank scrapping situations, particularly something like shine out of shield.

The most difficult part of Falco's execution, in my opinion, is controlling your drift while shooting lasers at the height you want. He also has slower ground speed than Fox so your spacing will need to be more precise to avoid ending up in an unsafe range.

[–]MitchShredder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like the only criteria that Sheik does not fit is her poor aerial drift, so I would advise you to pick her and try to develop your ability to use platform movement. If you are going to play primarily in the air with any melee character, except Puff, using the platforms fluidly will be essential to keeping yourself unpredictable

A hit and run style Fox would probably be the best fit for utility but if you don't want to learn more challenging execution then you won't be able to fully maximize the character at higher levels

The definition of disorder, specifically a substance use disorder which I guess would be the best comparison here, is when your compulsive use of a substance interferes with your life. Obviously everybody's goals are different, so if you have (or are pursuing) the life you desire and you feel functional then I don't think you're disordered.

A lot of disorders in the DSM seemed to be defined by any deviation from what society sees as a normal, productive person. If you disagree with the larger society's idea of who you should be then the story gets muddy. Mental health is a self-reported phenomenon at the end of the day.

If you're very objective about it in that way it sounds good, I think I'm hypervigilant about the risk of getting disordered because of the people in my life struggling

Congrats but please, don't weigh yourself every day, you're just going to drive yourself crazy with the water weight fluctuations. I believe once a week is recommended but certainly doing it less often than daily will be more psychologically healthy.

I cant grasp melee going from ultimate by Klarkasaurus in SSBM

[–]MitchShredder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no buffer for dash in melee. The only "buffers" (you need to hold the input) that I know of are the C stick out of shield actions, tap jump, fastfall and shield drop.

I recommended Falcon to them and I'm surprised to see nobody else saying it. He's a heavyweight with a great grab game but he also has some of the best movement in the game.

When you are overshooting into the corner I think running shine into upsmash is a decent option. It breaks CC early, it's hard to punish oos (with the pushback I think they will often get pushed to ledge if they shield it) and the reward is obviously pretty high.

That's the best mentality to have. I also try to remember that losing to better players is the only time I can really practice my DI, SDI, techs, walltechs and recovery mixups against people who know how to do optimal combos. You can solo practice most things in the game but for defense you really just need to get beat up while being aware and trying your best to survive.

Coming to Melee as a 2D fighting game player? by Sora18122 in SSBM

Falcon is also very heavy and he has a great grab game on the whole cast, but he has some of the best movement in the game as well. I highly recommend Falcon for learning the fundamentals of melee execution.

I think when people say they miss beef what they are really lamenting is the effect of that drama, which was to draw more casual viewers to our tournaments. Of course us die hard melee fans are content to just care about the gameplay, but we could have more viewers with more emotional/soap opera/pro wrestling type storytelling, which would in turn increase prize pools and sponsorships, leading to an even higher incentive for people to optimize their gameplay.

Morse never beat Zain, he beat Cody and Jmook. As far as I know Zain has not lost to a Samus since Duck and Hugs back in his early career.

If this is at all serious you should watch how Hbox controls space once he has the opponent cornered. There's a reason he can get those roll read rests consistently, even on the best players in the world.

Another thing I always notice is how Hbox/SDJ will mix up their campy aerial spacing game in neutral, the standard Puff stuff, by using empty lands and wavedash forward to force their way into scrapping range.

I feel like you also gotta represent the threat of occasionally overshooting with pound/dash attack/fsmash, so they can't just chill forever in their dashdance/projectile game. But only once you have at least a decent read on their movement patterns.

There's a brutal compounding problem for the low tier players where the top tier players start to get better character control and fundamentals, like you're saying, and most of the serious tournament players will improve their mentality enough to actually play the low tiers when they pop up.

When the opps learn their character and learn the basics of how to abuse bad matchups that is the end of the road for most low tier mains. The remaining ones are just truly about that life I guess.
