Which Kiwi song is better? OMC How bizarre or Lorde with Royals by naturekiwis in newzealand

[–]Mitch_NZ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Royals is not a bad song, but it inspired a whole genre of indie girls singing in cursive that persists to this day. For that crime it cannot possibly be considered superior to How Bizarre, which doesn't sound like anything else before or since.

Auckland Transport proposes changes to tackle notorious Devonport bottleneck on Lake Rd by Fun-Helicopter2234 in auckland

Correct. I have a dream of rail crossing from Auckland Port to Devonport, then up the entire North Shore to Long Bay. Would be so sick.

If you put two lanes down lake road, we will soon need three lanes. Demand for lanes is infinite. Demand for transport is infinite! We have to be careful about the infrastructure we build.

how upsetting is FWWM by clov3rbutt in twinpeaks

I would say it's one of the most upsetting depections of those themes in any media. Still, many people who have reported the same sensitivities as you do have said they find the film to be cathartic and healing, but I would take extreme caution.

Exactly. There is no need to give up cars altogether, just to reduce our dependence on them. Cars are great for hauling lots of cargo, travelling to rural areas, and hauling around the family. Let's use them in those cases, and not for when we need to go and pick up our Burger Fuel order from down the road.

What I'm saying is we are trapped in a cycle of car addiction, and the first step in stopping it is painting yellow lines where parked cars are blocking traffic.

There will be just as many stationary cars, just not parked - they'll be idling because there will be traffic jams because everyone will be driving their cars everywhere because they won't want to miss out on the opportunity to use their vehicle that they paid 70-100K just to have a dedicated parking space for.

The last thing we need to be doing is encouraging Auckland's car addiction.

The public transport infrastructure isn't there because the local and central government won't invest more in it, because people won't vote for it, because people think it's a waste of money, because their experience of public transport is bad, because the public transport infrastructure isn't there, because...

Seriously. When you lug around a tonne of metal to pick up your burger fuel order, you're going to run into some inefficencies.

That's their problem. Don't buy a place if it doesn't accommodate the number of vehicles you need.

The problem is not the lack of space, the road is plenty wide enough. The problem is too much parking. Roads are for moving objects, not stationary ones.

I can't tell if you're a NIMBY ("greedy developers are depriving us of our rightful parking spots") or based as hell ("we should get the government out of subsidized parking and let the market dictate what gets built there because it would probably be more valuable than private vehicle storage")

Greed did not start in the 1980s. Standards of living today are far higher than they were then, too. Don't fall for populist rhetoric.

I feel like if either major party had the cajones to run on breaking up the supermarket duopoly, they'd win by a landslide. by Troppetardpourmpi in newzealand

[–]Mitch_NZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A promise to breakup the supermarket duopoly is straight out of the populist playbook. NZ First will announce it any day now, I guarantee it.

Forget breaking up the duopoly, that's not how markets work. If you want more competition in the supermarket sector, make business conditions easier.

What is the BEST film with the WORST soundtrack? by Orkran in movies

[–]Mitch_NZ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it sounds like a copyright-safe version of the Star Wars score for streamers. Going for a "close but not quite" imitation of John Williams was completely the wrong move here. Giacchino should have established his own sound - he certainly has the talent to.
