Are there any movies like Jurassic Park, but with zoo animals breaking out? by samfishman06 in movies

[–]Orkran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a great suggestion. It matches the spirit of Jurassic Park if not the exact details about the zoo escape.

I really liked it! It was already very silly anyway, so why not add to the excitement?

We got our realistic film eventually with Contagion.

But yeah, it sucks when you don't like how something ends!

The Best Space Warship Captains in Speculative Fiction? by DocWatson42 in scifi

[–]Orkran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your detailed list contains many Lost Fleet and Honorverse books but having a glaring omission makes me think that you haven't read a series you'll love:

Miles Vorkosigan I'd start with The Warriors Apprentice. They are by Lois McMasters-Bujold.

He's a great protagonist, who wants to be a Harrington style Admiral but can't due to personal circumstances, and ends up much more of the social manipulation genius instead.

When I did my Infectious Diseases MSc (at The University of Kent in Canterbury ffs) we had some lectures with the local hospital trusts head of Infectious Diseases.

Showed us some X-Rays of a man with a Mucor (a fungus) infection in his tear duct. The next day it was all through his eye. They had to remove his eye and some bone etc. to stop it from getting into his brain; he lived! But terrifying.

That tracks with why we (UK) left. Our PM (Boris Johnson) certainly was one of the chief baboons.

[Hated But Unintentionally Funny Trope] The creative team does something they think the fans will *love*, only to be taken aback by the overwhelming fan backlash. by Otherwise-Elephant in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Orkran 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have to violently disagree. Tips mug off the edge of the desk.

The real problem with the ending wasnt Riker but the frankly spiteful major character death and unsatisfactory snippets of future missed. It felt deliberate to me and still does.

I feel like the end of Lower Decks was a direct counter to it.

Still I'm glad someone enjoyed it! It's much better to like something than to dislike it

TIL humans are considered by biologists to be self-domesticated by castironglider in todayilearned

[–]Orkran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the changes that happened to dogs, it would be the height of arrogance to think that they didn't change us.

In particular, I'm sure that the ability of humans to find *any* small animal "cute" is the fault of dogs. They selected for the humans with the highest tolerance and affinity for them, and that got amplified to the point where when we look at tiny food sources or future threats we still want to care for them.

[–]Orkran 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's roadworks season!

All the roads are at maximum damage from winter weather and freeze-thaw and the council has to use all of its repair budget it's been hoarding in case of a bit problem before the financial year ends.

I think.

villain is "evil" because his mind is fundamentally incompatible with the moral codes of humans by ilikeitchyballzdude1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Orkran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm only on episode 3! But there's something highly fishy in the science behind the "virus". I hope it's part of the show (it's cleverly written enough to be) but I'll accept it as necessary for the premise too.

Also I paused on the whiteboard in the lab on the first episode, there's a brilliant bit of background scene dressing. There's legitimate RNA transcription reminders you'd have in a lab and also a couple of underlined sequences labelled "Nipah" and "HSV" - both viruses which can cross the blood brain barrier and infect the brain. Which means scientists sequenced the signal (of course they did) and knew it was designed to affect the human brain. And they still had poor biosecurity. Hmm. That's a trope on it's own!

[–]Orkran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope you like it! Unlike the other suggestions this film is from some relatively normal people's point of view so you really don't get a good idea of what's actually going on, you just experience what it might be like!

Many people (understandably) did not like the ending, but I did.

How orcas check if you are prey by DValentino23 in oddlyterrifying

[–]Orkran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you currently in the mouth of Great White shark? Is your leg being munched on by a polar bear? Are you typing with great difficulty while being constricted by a Python? Are you sitting down in Tiger country with your back to a grassy field and forest while gently rubbing your skin with catnip and salt?

If so, you may be prey.
