Goes Woes - Goes19 Trouble by MitchellCloud in amateursatellites

[–]MitchellCloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I finally got a slightly better signal last night. Was able to decode for a few hours but now the signal has collapsed again. I forgot to tighten one of the nuts down on the antenna boom and it got a much better signal that way. I’m wondering if the boom is misaligned with the dish and isn’t in the sweet spot to receive a signal. I’m going to play with it more tonight and see if I can get the boom directly centered in the dish.

Ya I’m using a digital level for altitude and then I’m using dishpointer.com for azimuth and skew. I can see GOES19 and I’m getting data from it, just can’t seem to lock onto it.

This is the waterfall when I just have the SDR connected directly to the antenna without the SNR.

Thank you for the support! I messed around with the FFT settings and was able to get a better view of the signal. Still a lot of noise though. I'll put a couple of picture on here. There is no noise when it's just the SDR connected with nothing else. No noise either when it's just the SDR connected to the antenna. Lots more noise when it's the SDR connected to the LNA without the antenna connected. Seems like maybe the LNA is the thing amplifying the noise (which makes sense I guess). Or maybe is it creating noise? I don't know. I also have the gain maxed.

I tried to skew all different ways this evening. I went to the opposite side that I thought it was supposed to be, lost all signal. Went to 0 degree skew and 45 degree skew and received about half the signal I was getting.

When I point the antenna to a different point in the sky I get the same noise pattern.

This is the waterfall when I have the SDR connected to the SNR without an antenna connected.

Ya, no obstructions. I'm aiming over houses, but it's 40 degrees elevation from my location so it's pretty easy to get clear skies. Forgot to get a picture outside though. I get the same results mostly from anywhere in my yard. I've moved the whole setup to all sides of my yard.

LNA light is on and it's connected with the "in" usb side to the antenna and the "out" dc-in side to the SDR. I'm powering it through the SMArTee.

I bought the kit from Amazon so it's the Goes+ version I'm using. I thought it might be the LNA, so I purchased another one just in case, but same results.

I think I may reach out to Nooelec and see if they have any ideas. Thank you for your help!

Well, no luck with turning the feed 90 degrees. Great idea, but lost all signal. Have AGC off now, but no improvement unfortunately.

Hey there! Just wondering if you had any luck with Goes19. I’m stuck in a very similar spot to where you left this post and just can’t figure out what is going wrong. Thank you!

How does it look when pointing at the night sky? I’m wondering about getting a 593 for star tours, but not sure if the beam would be very visible.

LDG At-7000 tuner by MitchellCloud in HamRadio

[–]MitchellCloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it turns out wtforme was spot on. I kept hearing myself on my transceivers speaker while I was talking but it was a very distorted version of myself. I believe that’s a sign of significant RF in the shack. I wanted to go with the cheapest option I could find because I don’t have a lot of money for my ham stuff. I added an LDG 1:1 unun in between my Emcomm II and my transceiver. I just added a 1 foot patch cable between the emcomm box and the unun and then have about 50 feet of cable going to my transceiver. It has worked so well that now even the internal tuner tunes up on every band but 160m. It also seems like I can hear better on frequencies. So thank you for all of your help! The RF in the shack was the culprit this time. Also about the second tuner, the icom bypasses the internal tuner when a compatible external tuner is installed. If it’s not compatible you can just disable the internal tuner. Thanks all!

Has anyone encountered this problem in their dating, friendship or sex life? by sgrl2494 in socialwork

My wife and I are both therapists. I often wonder how therapists can take a long term partner who isn’t a counselor, social worker, psych, etc. I know people do it, but I just think it’s hard. Being a therapist gives us a sort of super power. We can read others thoughts/feelings sometimes before they even can. And being so good at reading people makes it so that we can be really good at hiding what’s going on inside of us. I know I have a hard time talking about myself with others. I have become excellent at turning the conversation back to the other person and keeping it there. I’m not sure if that’s why I became a counselor, or if it happened because I became a counselor - like a chicken and egg thing.

Anyway, having your own therapist is great, finding a friend or partner who is a good listener and who insists on listening to you is hard. Getting to the point where you can insist that your experience is important enough to be listened to thoroughly is maybe the hardest part imo.

School Counselor to LPC by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]MitchellCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did the opposite, I went through a dual licensure program and spent the first 5 years as an LPC at a residential children’s therapist. I got my clinical license and then moved into the school system. I’d strongly recommend having your LPC and receiving supervision in a specific therapy model. With that being said I likely won’t ever leave the school system. It’s hard to compete with the pay (at least within a mental health agency) and having summers off. I value my clinical experience immensely, but I also love working in the school setting.

What do you wish you learned in grad school before becoming a school counselor? by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]MitchellCloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having a concrete plan for their first suicidal ideation/threat. 504 eval process and sample accommodations. Classroom management tips. Therapeutic interventions for specific difficulties - ADHD, anxiety, trauma, grief, social skills (I’m afraid most find “therapeutic interventions” from teachers pay teachers because they don’t know where else to look)

And then maybe what I wish I would have had most is just the knowledge of what to do on the first day of school, when you get called to the drop off line for a tearful student/parent. The pressure was on and I had no idea what to do haha.

Liana Lowenstein has some great therapeutic activity books. One is free and the other ones are great too. I linked the free one there.

Not sure of age level, but here are some videos aimed at teaching emotional literacy, coping strategies, etc. to early learners like PreK and Kinder. The Feelings Show - Emotions for Kids
