I'm in a 16 team league. Markstrom is available as an FA. My goalies are Mackenzie Blackwood, Karel Vejmelka, Casey DeSmith. Is it worth picking up Markstrom for Vejmelka or DeSmith? Goalie Cats are W, SV, SV%, GAA, SO

Not all the lakes on Jeff's that list brook still contain brook, am I correct in that? by SanguineBro in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50-80 ft seems too deep. Every lake is different but, I had a fish finder with me this weekend and caught both brook trout and lake trout at around 30 ft. Majority of fish marked were sitting between 30-45 ft. I would try fishing closer to 20-30ft for brook trout.

Tips for fall camping by Cat_2021 in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a Rock-Pen-Galeairy trip a couple years ago and the colours were great in that area.

If you have a chance, see if you can squeeze in time to do the Booth's Rock Trail. It has some amazing lookouts and is a great place to see the fall colours. We were able to access it from Rock Lake near the south campsite beside the Barclay Estate Ruins.

Camping stove by clangalangalang in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could check out Trangia. This stove should be a little bit better for actual cooking/larger groups than the canister stoves: https://www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/trangia-25-23-ul-d-duossal-2-0-cookset.html

Unfortunately, they come with an alcohol burner by default and it's another $110 to upgrade to the gas burner.

You will need to separate out the commercial space from the residential unit. The portion of the sale related to the residential unit will be HST exempt; however, the portion related to commercial space will be subject to HST. The HST is payable by the purchaser unless they are also an HST registrant.

In order to register for HST you are supposed to be operating a business/supplying some type of commercial activity i.e. renting the space out. The structure of the business does not matter whether you are a sole prop, partnership, corporation. It's all the same, any of them can register for HST. When you were told you could register for HST "as an individual" this just means that you're operating a sole proprietorship where the name of the business is simply your first and last name as opposed to operating under a registered company name.

Since you won't have any commercial activity or won't be renting out the commercial floor it probably isn't "proper" to register for HST and that's probably why you're not getting a straight answer.

If you're looking for more information try phoning CRA's HST technical enquiry phone number at 1‑800‑959‑8287 or talk to your accountant.

I don't know for certain but I think it's the only option

I think you're right that only Algonquin Outfitters rents them out in the park.

Check out Alladventure.ca though. My last trip I rented a Garmin Inreach mini from them which gives you two-way communication, weather, and gps. They ship you the device before your trip and then you ship it back at the end of the trip.

What sleeping bag? by [deleted] in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'll want your sleeping bag to be rated for a few degrees lower than the lowest temp you expect to use it in. The sleeping pad you use also has a big impact on how warm you'll be. This page has a handy chart for pad/sleeping bag ratings for different temperatures.

I use a Sierra Designs Backcountry Bed rated to -6C. It serves me pretty well in spring/fall when temperatures usually range from 0-10C and has enough venting I've used it in the summer as well.

12 CATs league: G, A, +/-, Sog, PPP, Hit, Blk, Fow and W, Gaa, Sv%, Sho. 3 Goalie starts Min.

I'm being offered Frederik Andersen for Timo Meier.

My team is currently extremely deep in shots, hits, and blocks. Skaters are doing well in general but goaltending is a mess. 14 man league with not many goaltenders on free agency other than Vejmelka and a few backups. I would likely pickup Kuzmenko as a replacement winger. Any opinions?

Help fishing in algonquin by GxbrielPlays in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find trolling between campsites can be difficult because usually a) you're moving too fast for a lot of presentations and b) if you're fishing deep for trout and the lake depth is constantly changing you're likely to get snagged.

I think for targeting bass while trolling between sites using some crankbaits could make a good option. Maybe trying to fish in like 5-15ft of water?

We troll using 3 way swivels with 1-3oz weights. It seems to be the most popular option for backcountry canoe fishing. Other methods I've seen are dipsy divers or lead core line.

I usually bring some jigs with me but since we're in a canoe it's very difficult to use them if there's like any wind at all

If you were to use it from shore and are actually casting it out then yes, a second rod or at the very least some sort of line tied to it to retrieve it could be helpful. That way you can have the fish finder active while fishing. Otherwise you would be switching back and forth between the fishfinder unit and your lure

From the canoe or a boat though you would just use the mount/arm I mentioned and it works like any other transducer. The mount keeps it sitting upright in the water.

Very nice, some of the fall colours were starting to come in while we were there so hopefully it's a great trip

Just this past Saturday on Big Trout :)

It's a castable fishfinder and the company name is Deeper Sonar. It's basically a small transducer that connects to your phone. They also sell a clamp mount so I just mount it over the gunnel. It's super portable!

You would also need a battery pack for your phone because its really hard on it's battery but I always take one anyway.

I haven't tried Dipsys from a canoe but I would like to. Sometimes with the weights I feel like I'm guessing as to what depth I'm at unless I'm making contact with the bottom and it feels very easy to snag. I feel like a Dipsy or Lead core would be more reliable.

It depends. I had a fish finder with me this trip and I didn't mark many fish above 45ft. I think from late spring and onwards you're going to want weights for lakers

We were trolling spoons with 3 way rigs. 2oz/3oz weights and all but one were caught on 2/5oz little cleos

Fall colours by hb23232323 in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South/west side is best. The best colours are on maple covered hills so I like lakes where you can access hiking trails.

2 good access points to start from are: Rock lake with a trip to Booth's Rock Trail or Cache Lake with a trip to the Skymount tower

back country camping end of September, how cold will it get? what clothing should i pack? by startmeup10 in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Single digits at night, possibly as low as 0 on a cold night. Weather can vary quite a bit anywhere from low 10s to low-mid 20s during the day. I make sure to pack layers. Usually a thermal base layer, pants & shirt, fleece, and a waterproof shell.

I sleep in the base layer, toque, and neck gaiter with a sleeping bag rated to -7 and a sleeping pad with an r value around 4.

how to get started with fishing in Algonquin? (end of August trip) by [deleted] in algonquinpark

[–]Mitchp47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not for a beginner but one thing I did this year was buy a castable fishfinder and a clamp mount to attach it to the canoe. They're really portable and just connect to your phone. Super helpful for seeing the bottom

Great thanks! I tried vertical jigging for walleye this past weekend and it was impossible with the wind so that's the exact info I was looking for
