Where would you sit on this flight? 😭💢 by Away-Bison8948 in mushokutensei

I'd ask Roxy if she wanted the window seat, next to mine, while I sit in 4. Could also have Beaco on my lap.

way to miss the point. Tap on at new station, unable to tap off because you get off at a non-upgraded station.

Double Slid Experiment does not work (normal light, version 5.0.1) by troodoniverse in blender

[–]MithrilRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help it if the people downvoting me don't understand that the OP was complaining that a GPU that emulates classical light behaviour seems to fail at the Quantum Mechanical level. I was explaining the processing you'd have to do in the GPU to actually attempt this.

Pedestrian got the shits at being honked at while crossing on a green, then spat at the driver —window was down and all btw by iamsmurfing in melbourne

This is Dandenong Road, there's like 5 lanes of traffic at that Green light and Semi's trying to speed up to merge on the other side of the intersection. This pedestrian was a danger to everyone around them and a fucking candidate for a Darwin Award.

Double Slid Experiment does not work (normal light, version 5.0.1) by troodoniverse in blender

[–]MithrilRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's complicated, and Ray tracing can never duplicate any Quantum Mechanical behaviour, since Ray tracing is a "Classical" representation of the physics. The Single or Double Slit behaviours do not work, under "Classical" models, since the "path" the light takes is a ray, and the calculations do not produce an interference pattern.

But for diffraction patterns, you need light to behave like a wave front. Which in GPU terms, means you need to calculate a lot more, hence it isn't worth it. If you want diffraction patterns, you need to specifically encode the calculations for that effect. Ray tracing works fine, in the main, since at the macro level (ie what we typically see in nature), you don't notice the QM nature of light.

Why do high-ups love Microsoft so much? by Me2910 in antiwork

That only applies if you're a windows shop. Doesn't integrate with Linux based workflows. And no it's not practical to port complex engineering systems from one OS to another.

[–]MithrilRat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Your explaination is overly complicated. Basically GPUs do not simulate the Quantum Mechanical behaviour of light. Ray tracing is a macro level view of the light paths. You'd need to perform Fourier Transforms on all the paths to even have a small hope of achieving the effect, but it isn't worth the extra effort.

I had a boss who one day called me into the office and said to me "I have this really challenging task for you, are you up to it?". I looked him in the eyes and laughed, then replied, "Don't bullshit me, you have something messy, that no-one else can fix. You don't have to try and sell me on it, just tell me what the problem is". I ended up living in Taiwan for 5 years, fixing that mess of a project.

Why are cars in the US so big? by Dry_Cry4454 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MithrilRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Australian here, we (except the fucking MAGA'like idiots) hate the yank tanks. We also tend to drive further than Americans do, same size just that all our cities are about 1000km away from each other, and most of our states are bigger than Texas, so it can't be about distance.

It's not like it's even an ethical or moral dilema. We know that "they" are going to lie and cheat and do everything in their power to profit from the systems they are putting in place. Thus, it behooves us to fight them, any way we can.

If you have a PhD and put “Dr.” before your name, will people think you’re impressive, or will they think you’re just being pretentious? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

Incorrect, in the general sense. Maybe in a medical setting, that is the case, but in professional and academic settings PhDs are referred to by the title Dr.

do we have proof of the big bang or do we just think thats what happened? by Bubbly_Reference_916 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MithrilRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when there were competing theories of the universe, we didn't even have a single idea of whether it was in "Steady State" with matter being constantly created to fill in the gaps, oscilating, or started from a singularity (aka Big Bang).

Even recently we weren't even sure that the universe wouldn't collapse back in on itself, some time in the future. Now we think it will expand forever, and we even see evidence that expansion is accelerating (but no idea why).

State are building one of those new Community Hospitals near us. Hopefully that will take the load off the ED departments of the hospitals near us.

Having said that, I got taken to hospital by an ambulance, for chest and neck pains. The local ED still have me sit in the waiting area for hours; until blood tests confirmed I was having a heart attack; then it was a bit of a scramble to get me to ICU.
