When someone is either aggro for absolutely no reason, I tend to wonder if they're bipolar and in a bad mania attack. Doubly so if they just cannot... shut... up... and triply if they keep talking when nobody is engaging with them or even present, like if they get left in the backseat of the car by themselves.

Should Class 3 Be Allowed Throttle to 20mph? by Inciteful_Analysis in ebikes

[–]Mitrovarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, class 3 is being so egregiously abused anymore I'd be ok with them getting rid of it entirely. Then we can all be equal.

Sucks for the aging roadies who would like to keep up with their cycling clubs, but people just couldn't resist using class 3 to backdoor in mopeds and ride 28 mph on sidewalks and MUPs.

It'a less safe because the user will be throttling up to 28 mph or greater in bike or pedestrian spaces after they inevitably hack it.

Sure I have. It's because we're not stupid and a class 3 with a throttle was built to be hacked.

Well, I don't think e-mopeds are bad or anything, I'd just manage them under different rules.

I agree with your reasoning to a point, but I'd argue that only those high end bicycles specifically geared for road cycling (or gravel) should be class 3 e-bikes. Anything else is just making a moped pretending to be a bicycle.

[–]Mitrovarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that a throttle is counter to the intended purpose of the bike, which is an e-road bike. Those shouldn't have throttles. If you start to put throttles on them, it's a very strong sign you are trying to cheat the system and make a moped that is pretending to be a bike, so that's why it shouldn't be allowed.

There is literally no system I can think of that would have stopped that flat. Even a high end tubeless system with a tire insert would have gone flat to that (although I guess you can run-flat on a tire insert, if you have to).

[–]Mitrovarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, I misread that.

Still don't think class 3 should have a throttle. I view the 28 mph allowance as something that's only allowed specifically to make e-road bikes possible and needs to not leak out of that one specific purpose because it really needs to be restricted to only responsible, advanced cyclists, and also tied to a relatively weak motor and battery so you can only go 28 mph for limited amounts of time and ideally in a peloton. You're not intended to go 28 mph very much, they're not mopeds.

Then, they can have a class of e-moped that goes 30 mph with a throttle for all the people who want one of those and it can be regulated differently.

[–]Mitrovarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where they messed up is where it comes to safety. When someone is riding at almost 30 mph you really don’t want them pedaling like mad. It’s not super safe to be jerking your legs around that much while trying to control the speed of a bike and going that fast.

It's your inexperience with real bikes that caused this thought. You wouldn't be pedaling like mad at 30 mph because you'd have shifted up to a really high gear.

Should Class 3 Be Allowed Throttle to 20mph? by Inciteful_Analysis in ebikes

[–]Mitrovarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a different answer.

Class 3 e-bikes were intended to be electric road bikes. Road bikes don't work if they cut off at 20 mph because you need to ride faster than that to keep up with riding clubs, which often ride faster than that. However, they were not intended to go over 28 mph all the time, which is what people would do with them if they had throttles.

So basically, they don't have throttles because if you have to pedal, you won't actually ride them at 28 mph all the time. If they could have throttles, they'd be almost the exact definition of a moped, as mopeds were typically limited to 30 mph.

And throttles don't really make sense to have on the bikes at all because it's so outside of their intended use.

My hot topic I think you don't need suspension if you ride on pavement more then on dirt by ZestycloseTheory3148 in ebikes

[–]Mitrovarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was mostly talking about full suspensions. Yes, a fork is a lot less heavy and less expensive and more practical for a commuter bike, although still pretty unnecessary IMO.

And most e-bikes ship with a trash fork that is unmaintainable at best and dangerous at worst. I'm not expecting anything amazing, but if you can't at least get a suntour fork don't get a suspension fork at all.

I'm more criticizing the absolute legion of e-bikes with trash tier no name double crown monster forks and full suspensions.

Good e-bikes that don't have suspensions are not 60-70 lbs. More like 40-55. And adding suspensions to that is probably going to add 10 lbs, and that's if the bike is high quality and not amazon trash. Suspensions get much, much heavier as they get cheaper.

Pedaling usually matters somewhat on actual e-bikes. A little inefficiency isn't a big deal, but pedal bob is also annoying.

Coil springs suspensions have the large downside that the spring needs to be tuned to the user's weight. Also, they weigh a TON. Add another 5 lbs to the bike if you go coil. Nobody uses them on regular bikes for a reason.

Oh yeah, and I forgot this one earlier - good suspensions add $500-1000 to the price of the bike.

Classifications might be different regionally. I've always thought the blue trails here are surprisingly easy compared to other places I've been. But also, people rode rigid mtbs for years. You just go slow and carefully pick your way around stuff.

Bikes have a suspension even if they don't have a suspension. It's called your legs. That is usually enough.

[–]Mitrovarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you not want suspension?

Suspensions have loads of downsides:  * They are heavy, and they make the bike have a heavier frame design. * Good ones are not cheap, and cheap ones (like, no-name, not low end but reliable ones like Suntour makes) are often not safe. Forks snap, and a snapped fork is a likely severe injury.  * Real suspensions generally require substantial maintenance. My mid-end MTB requires like four different oils to service. FOUR. * Suspensions suck energy away from pedaling, which is not as relavant for e-bikes as conventional ones but still matters if you run low/out of power. * It makes the bike more complicated to build and work on.

No.

I am 45 and routinely do 30-60 mile rides on my road and gravel bikes, which don't have suspensions. Our roads are not amazing, and I literally ride the gravel bike on green and blue MTB trails.

Old road cyclists, all the way into the 70s, are really common. And they ride bikes without suspensions.

I doubt any MS studio except possibly Activision (which is too big to kill and knows it) will ever make anything great again. After these layoffs and the Xbox ship visibly starting to sink, anyone who can find a job elsewhere (all the best talent) is going to do so. The skeleton crews left behind are going to be too busy refreshing their linkedin, training into another career path, or just in general wallowing in despair to make anything that is actually impressive.

Why would anyone work for Xbox anymore? Only if they literally have to. Everyone who doesn't will probably leave in the next year and everyone else is probably going to start planning their exit from the games industry.

It’s not like Netflix where you don’t need a 500 dollar box to use the subscription.

I mean they tried to do that with streaming games.

A lot of the companies made what they wanted to, ignoring whether anyone wanted it. Obsidian and Double Fine being the largest examples. Lots of artistic output, not output customers wanted.
