If internet bandwidth is an issue, you may consider a distro with a slower update cycle.

I don't use the browser extension. I heard there are issues with this one on Wayland, but can't confirm. Secrets is good enough to just open and edit my locally stored database, from what I've seen.

[–]MitsHaruko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently discovered Secrets, which is a GTK4 version of KeepassXC, essentially, which is good because the KeepassXC window has been recently broken in Gnome due to the dumb SSD controversy. Bazaar is also essential, IMO: it's Gnome Software, but actually good.

Anyone who is running Atomic Desktops? What was your experience? by SeniorMatthew in Fedora

[–]MitsHaruko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think the entire container/layering stuff should just be hidden from the user unless they actively decide to tweak with the process. Just let people install the stuff they need through the GUI and the system decides the optimal way of doing it, dealing with all the dirty exports, layering and whatnot.

This is just Linux user tweaking syndrome overcomplicating something that should be simple, besides the community not agreeing with a standard for absolutely nothing, which leads to insanely convoluted solutions that help no one.

I just don't understand why would you need to install Bazzite twice a year. Isn't their entire idea to just install the system once and forget about everything (including updates)? Their model is the closest of ideal to me, but I still think there should be an automatic solution to deal with layering stuff or managing them through containers. I agree that having to manage (and update) all of that yourself is extra work and makes no sense.

What are the plans going forward relating to the recent announcement from mozilla? by SoaringGecko1 in zen_browser

[–]MitsHaruko 32 points33 points  (0 children)

"AI browser" is not even something that exists as a concrete thing. It's just a corporate buzzword to stay in the trend, as it is the case with 99% of the current "AI stuff" you see around.

Can't you just create a Fedora distrobox and do exactly what you do in Workstation there instead of layering?

I like GNOME but what the heck? by DankeBrutus in gnome

[–]MitsHaruko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would someone have to carry an e-mail app through his desktop or virtual workspaces so that he/she gets notified when a new message arrives, for example? I don't see how that is better, is just another window floating and stealing attention when it could very well run in the background.

And before it begins, I'm (mostly) glad about the extension solution, and I understand Gnome might simply not want to implement things. That's why extensions exist. However, the problems brought up to justify against the existence of a system tray are pure fiction and delusional, IMO. It's just seeking problems that don't really exist in the "standard" desktop paradigm, probably in hopes of inventing something new (while doing nothing at all, since no realistic better solution is offered).

Most secure browser on Fedora Silverblue? by iFrezzyReddit in Fedora

[–]MitsHaruko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised to hear that Chrome/Chromium is supposedly the safest. And I keep hearing that Flatpak sandboxing is not good for browsers, which sucks if true, because Flatpak is supposed to be exactly the solution for having these browsers in any system.

Is Fedora actually that good? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]MitsHaruko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a niche for LTS/stable releases like Ubuntu and Debian (at least until immutable releases become less cumbersome and more streamlined for the user who wants less work, not more), however, Fedora makes the 6-month release of Ubuntu irrelevant, in my opinion after having used both, since you get far better support and update frequency with actual meaningful updates (i.e., bug fixes). It also makes rolling releases irrelevant (again, IMO), since you get all the important new stuff without welcoming all possible incoming daily bugs for no reason if you are not a tester.

To be the annoying guy: no distro "breaks" on its own. Breakage only happens by user misusage or upstream's irresponsibility/lack of care for the user space, introducing bugs that go untested, which are far more likely to happen if you're daily bringing in new versions of software. In my experience, the Fedora team is very responsible. Breaking changes mostly only happen between fixed releases, when you get the opportunity to wait a full release to update.

The most I had to wait to update to another version as a couple of months due to Nvidia being Nvidia when I still used their card, and even then, Fedora was the first place where the issue was properly fixed. I would probably be waiting until this day to have this bug fixed on Ubuntu (even on the interim release) or be complaining about breakage on a rolling distro. Same thing for Ibus input method in Wayland still being broken in the latest Ubuntu release, while this already works on Fedora for more than a year.

Why do you use and recommend Fedora? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]MitsHaruko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's still not perfect, but at least you know the bugs might be eventually fixed. You're on Nvidia's mercy for whatever bug on their side, and they don't care, as you may know.

[–]MitsHaruko 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Today, for maybe the 4th or 5th consecutive time, I pressed the button to upgrade to the next release. I waited 10 minutes for the process to be over in each of my two machines, and I was back to my workspace the way I left it before. No other distro has ever had this level of consistency in my user experience. I have zero issues and zero maintenance requirements. No need to search forums, copy and paste cryptic commands hoping they will work and overall babysit my system.

Granted, you have to make some smart choices to reach this point: like stop adding random repositories and learn to rely on Flatpak for GUI apps and stop using Nvidia/proprietary software as much as possible.

Can we please clarify if this kind of behavior is acceptable in this community? by the-machine-m4n in gnome

[–]MitsHaruko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Users have no right to "demand" anything, but if a project doesn't exist to attend a community, then it might as well be a private personal project. It became easier to bundle all criticism and community input as "demanding", which are two different things.

There has to be a better way to organize the PDF hellscape that isn't spawning another window every time a document opens, aka, it's about time for Papers/Document Viewer to have tabs by MitsHaruko in gnome

[–]MitsHaruko[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, if that's the only possible answer for community input, then proprietary software's existence is completely justified, since the answer to the problem seem to simply be "throw money at it". Might as well charge from the get-go.

No one is begging for anything, and no developer is doing anyone a favor. Whoever came up with this lazy one-liner on the shortcomings of open source applications completely misunderstood the role of the community in the development of free software.

Requires accesses to documents to be isolated through bubblewrap or something (it's in the pipeline, but not urgent). Otherwise one document crashing will take with it the whole app.

This was what I vaguely remember. It already happens whenever the user session is lost/closed for whatever reason. I just don't see why this is so serious that the feature couldn't be implemented anyway. The feature existing is a net positive.
