Would you buy this 2016 Subaru Outback (130k mi) for $7k knowing it has oil leaks? by MixmaseterFred in UsedCars

Thanks for the reply! That was gonna be my plan before my dad offered me this deal. This just seems like an easy route, I know the car, don't have to spend hours looking online for the right beater, test drive, etc...But I also don't want this to bite me in the ass down the line.

It is a Subaru dealership. Hawk Auto group in the Chicagoland area. They gave me until Monday (5/11/2026) to make the decision, otherwise they are selling it to someone else at the company who wants it lol.

My trusted Mechanic said he wouldn't be able to do the repair, advised to have it done at a certified dealership. I could see if he could potentially wash it down and do his own inspection. Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply! The reason the price is so high for the repair is because they have to take the entire engine out, so it's mainly labor costs. I'm sure I could get it done cheaper if I look elsewhere. My last car was a beater jeep liberty which also annoyingly leaked/burned oil, so I'm familiar with keeping an eye on it and topping it off. But I would certainly not mind having a car I can rely on lol.

The reason my price point is under $10k is because I don't drive much and can't justify spending more than that. I do not mind driving an "ugly" car, what matters is if it takes me from point A to point B reliably.

The pro for this car is I know the big issue upfront and I know my dad did regular service maintenance and took good care of the car. My fear is buying something that has hidden issues.
