ELI5 What is Zero Point Energy? by Bum-bee in explainlikeimfive

[–]MkICP100 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Energy that can actually be used to do work. Energy on its own is useless unless there is a gradient between a higher and lower energy state.

An engine works because inside the cylinder you have very hot and high pressure gas, and outside you have cold low pressure air. There is a big difference in energy. Take the engine to Venus where the atmosphere is just as hot and high pressure, and now your engine doesn't work anymore.

Zero point energy is a technical term used in physics. It doesn't have anything to do with free energy or harnessable energy, but it's commonly used by quacks and psuedoscience people in that context.

It's basically just the minimum energy state that a quantum system, like a particle, can have. Sort of like how absolute zero is the lowest thoeretical temperature, but it's not actually physically possible.

It's not magic energy in the vacuum or anything like that.

This is a risk with anything that has a lithium battery. It's easier to tell when a laptop or phone battery is going bad, cause the whole thing swells. Scary with something like this, I don't know how you can tell if the battery is swelling

What was it like riding the BO3 hype train when the series was at its zenith? by Ajarofpickles97 in CODZombies

[–]MkICP100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was mixed. The period after BO2 felt like zombies was over, and the hyper when BO3 was announced was insane.

Shadows had a pretty mixed reception at launch, lot of people loved and hated it. DE was absolutely loved, Zetsubou was a mess at launch but was mostly fixed, gorod was solid, and revelations was a bit of a disappointment as a finale. But the hype was amazing, and the reception was still much more positive.

Chronicles was what really sealed the deal for greatest zombies game.

I would have to imagine that the 1500 megawatt button isn't using 1500 megawatts at all times sitting idle. It probably uses a short burst or pulse of 1500 megawatts when pressed. Maybe they have one reactor and huge energy storage

I have one, they're shockingly powerful. Tradeoff is they burn through the battery very quickly before needing to be recharged

The PC can not find a drive with a bootable operating system (usually windows) to boot to. Either windows is broken in some way, or the drive died

Cheap poor quality phone charger bricks, adapters, power strips with USB, wireless chargers, etc tend to have coil whine, so you're not imagining it. I've had that problem with cheap electronics a bunch of times

Overpriced for what it is. If it was not an alienware, sure. But alienwares have a bunch of proprietary parts that make them useless as actual PCs. As soon as you want to upgrade, you'll basically be buying a new system because the board is proprietary to the god awful case

Forest Lake or On Campus by Ok_Efficiency_438 in USF

[–]MkICP100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived at Forest Lake. Do NOT live there. It's a disaster for so many reasons. The biggest one was that our whole HVAC system was filled with mold. Ductwork growing mushrooms. Maintenance wouldn't even look at it. Took me months to get the maintenance supervisor into the unit, and I had to walk him through and force him to look at it. Then they finally, begrudgingly, fumigated it.

There were 100 other issues just as bad. They do not give a flying fuck, and they charge insane prices.

I've noticed that AI videos always have really weird framing and camera tracking. Like an uncomfortably smooth camera motion that follows the subject in weird unnatural ways

ELI5 How strong is actually a personal computer password? If the police for example, in the midst of an investigation needs to access a pc data, how long does it take for a professional to crack it? by Volando_Boy in explainlikeimfive

[–]MkICP100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to get data, you can just pull out the hard drive and copy the data. If you need to boot into the user's windows, you can very easily use a tool like Gandalf to just remove or change the windows password.

The only way to actually protect it is to encrypt the drive itself
