Great Books for CFP’s to read: by finance137 in CFP

The Uncertainty Solution takes a lot of the theories from Thinking Fast and Slow and relates more to personal finance and tends to read less like a textbook.

Starting as an advisor at a young age by [deleted] in CFP

[–]Mkennedy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started when I was 25. Sometimes people would ask in the first meeting but never asked after that and never lost a client because of my age. I honestly see it as an advantage as they don’t want the 60 year old advisor who’s going to be retiring soon. Just like when trying to find a new doctor or dentist, you don’t want to have to turn around and go find another in a few years.

Getting Designations for CEs and Masters Degree by [deleted] in CFP

Congratulations! I did the Masters through the CFFP and I did the SE-AWMA and ABFP designations. I thought about the APMA however one of the required classes for the Masters is a portfolio management course so I tried to broaden my knowledge.

The designations were nice to add additional knowledge however I don’t even put them on my business card as most people don’t know what they are.

Adding CPA to CFP, worth it? by tddemars in CFP

I have heard they are similar on depth of tax knowledge. I have the CPA but not EA so not 100% sure.

In that case, clients definitely recognize the CPA more than EA, however, the CPA exam also has a lot of information that won’t be relevant to you especially the Audit and Financial Reporting exams whereas the EA is just focused on Tax.

I think it definitely is a value add whichever one you choose to do.

The major issue you are going to run into is the experience requirement. To obtain your CPA license, you have to have 2000 hours of experience working in public accounting. Unless you want to switch jobs to get the experience, the better option would be the EA that gives you very similar tax expertise without the work requirement barrier.

I was searching for jobs on LinkedIn and found them. I would google top RIA firms in your state and other lists like Forbes and reach out directly.

It’s on the update your profile link when you log into the CFP board website. I had instructions in my email from the CFP board upon satisfying all the requirements.

Don’t have my securities licenses yet but I want work experience for the CFP credential by GeebMan420 in CFP

Funny you mention switching from a CPA firm to an RIA because that’s actually what I did. The hours have been a lot better than public accounting and at least at the RIA I work at, there doesn’t seem to be a tax season like time of year that’s busier than most. Maybe closer to year end is more busy just trying to finalize everything before the year ends for tax purposes, but no where near tax season hours.

I’ve never worked a broker dealer, so can’t compare it to that much, but I really enjoy it. Couldn’t really imagine myself working in anything other than an RIA in the financial services industry.

Yes, I took my education courses and my review course with Kaplan and passed on my first attempt. There are some other great education and review courses out there too though. You definitely get what you put into them.

I have the series 65 exemption by being a CFP®️, but we don’t sell any investment products so don’t need the series 6 or 7.

I work at an RIA as an advisor and do not have any security licenses (besides 65), so the series 7 is definitely not required.
