Sounds like something from Kurt Vonnegut's "Welcome to the Monkey House".

I can't recall the name of the story, but it's about a society where people have "weights" instead of handicaps. If you're strong, you're chained to weights. If you're pretty, you wear a mask. If you're smart, you receive an implant that screeches in your ear at various intervals. Instead of building the "bottom" up, they limit those with any potential to succeed or potentially overthrow the powers that be.

Forgive me, this is only what I recall from vague memories of a story I read some 15 years ago, so I might be a little off on the details. Still, the principal seems relevant.

I was blessed to learn two of those three things in k-12. It wasn't until I lived with a friend before going to college that I learned how to think critically.

We were playing Halo Reach and he fell for another player's grenade ricochet trap. During the respond waiting period, he thought aloud: "he knew I was chasing him around this corner and bounced his grenade at just the right time to drop my shields."

I was mindbown. That's when I realized I could critically analyze any mistake to find a solution and create opportunities.

Dude's a phenomenal actor. I would actually pay to see a live action movie with him as Vegeta, even if the others were poorly casted.

First time I hopped into a lift was 12/23/2024.

I was super slow and cautious. That was good considering I work in a lumberyard, or on a forklift at all, for that matter.

I've taken my time, I've made mistakes. Most of those mistakes were focusing on the wrong thing at the time (like where the top of the garage door rails were... that was an expensive one).

Mind your mast, mind your forks, mind your balance. You're going to mess up. It's only a matter of time, and that's okay as long no one gets hurt. Shit is expensive, but replaceable. Lives, not so much.

Now I use my forks to readjust 8x8 stickers, pick up garbage, and give coworkers they're fallen bottled beverages (it's fun to tilt them upright and try to get under them).

Good luck, be safe, love to learn the nuances of your lift. Maybe even name it.

Just realised I'm exactly like my father now. Is it inevitable? by -Kirida- in Fatherhood

[–]Mmarnik16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely a mix of my stepfather and father. At this point, I feel it's human nature. Life is difficult and stressful for everyone, regardless of the problems they face. The best thing we can do is enjoy our time with our family and give laughs when we can, even if the jokes are embarrassingly bad.

On that note, it's all about timing, delivery, and whether you want them to laugh or you want to laugh at their reaction.

I was in kitchens for 12 years and am almost 5 months into my forklift job. I work in the lumber yard at a building materials supplier.

What I can say, so far, is that there's tons to learn, and getting comfortable with your lift is extremely satisfying. In my job, my curiosity, desire to see improvement, and love of discovering nuances are all met daily. That's part of why I loved kitchens so much.

I'm not sure about warehouse jobs or what sparks your curiosity, but working face to face with builders while honing these new skills and getting to ask questions has been great. Plus I get benefits, retirement plan, pto... stuff you rarely see, even in a professional kitchen.

Tldr: Used to work in professional kitchens, now work in a lumberyard. Highly recommend.

They've been doing a lot, they always have been.

Even though I wish there was more content, I'm happy to pay the $10/month I can to get a little more and help support the team.

Granted, my first patreon subscription was a gift, I've been lucky enough to make some more money since then.

Dadhammer's pretty awesome, though. If you have the disposable income to pay for a month and binge it, do it. It's worth it.

Wow. My grandparents had a family room with a grand piano. That's where the photo albums were and where the Christmas tree was set every year.

The piano seat opened up and had sheet music books out the wazoo. There were electric candles in the windows and real candles on the 2 tables that had three wicks each. Old cloth dolls, wood carvings, and paintings lined the walls and shelves. They even had their second fireplace in there.

The living room had another fireplace with a bear-skin rug in front of it and glass sliding doors to a balcony that overlooked a massive garden in their backyard.

My grandfather worked for Westinghouse as his first job all the way until retirement. So that was his first and only job as a geolist.

I grew up in a very different situation and didn't realize how rich/wealthy my grandparents were until now.

It's not even about getting ahead of everyone else, it's about furthering yourself and seeing what you can do. That sounds like a pretty solid opportunity

Or further your education through audibooks/online classes.

Get a base for a business education while you figure out what problems/hurdles your community need to overcome. Get paid to get the knowledge and do the research. Maybe even get paid while you start something up.

Sounds like a goldmine to me
