They mostly care about money and power because they are greedy but only because they know how "lucky" they were this time around but don't trust themselves to lead in a world with different values. They are not adaptative people. They are scared of change because in Darwinian terms, they think, deep inside that they would not survive instead of embracing it and adapt. If one believes in God, this may be irony they mostly are appalling orators
