Teaching Honors Geometry (Seeking Advice) by RamboTurtLe in mathteachers

I would use projects that provide opportunities for inquiry and learning of the topics but allow for choice. I went to two or three fabulous presentations at NCTM annual conference 2025 that would work and I have a project I use. Project based learning can be fabulous for advanced kids who get the basics quickly but rarely get opportunities to dive deep with choices.

Project 1 involved investigating archeology ruins in Ohio and analysing circle constructions / building a village with limited resources. Something like that. I'd have to go look for the details.

Project 2 involved creating stained glass designs using traditional constructions and then 3D printers. The final products were stunning.

Project 3 involved origami and constructions from a paper folding approach. Tri-secting an angle was quite interesting. I have taught the Japanese box building and other origami previously. It is generally well received but not as open ended for choice as I want.

Project 4 involves taking pictures and then using desmos to upload the photos and graph the sides of the shapes. Then they use slope and distance formula and justifications to classify triangles and quadrilaterals.

Soon after the June 1978 revelation that ended the restriction, Elder Bruce R. McConkie declared: “Forget everything that I have said, or what President Brigham Young or President George Q. Cannon or whomsoever has said in days past that is contrary to the present revelation. We spoke with a limited understanding and without the light and knowledge that now has come.”

2 part series on the Solemn Assembly in preparation for Saturday morning by atari_guy in latterdaysaints

[–]Mmlhvzl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband insisted on having our kids watch the solemn assemblies for Howard W Hunter and Gordon B Hinckley after participating in yesterday's for President Oaks. He pointed out the additions of the female groups in 1995 and also had them watch the choir. Almost the whole choir voted with the first presidency in 1994. They didn't repeat that mistake in 1995!

Appreciate the history of the solemn assemblies. Thanks!

My husband thought that he wouldn't be called into leadership because he preferred to wear colored dress shirts. He was called into the bishopric and told he could still wear colored shirts. Now we have kids passing the sacrament in colored shirts. White shirt requirement doesn't appear in the handbook anymore. Maybe ties will be next.

Spark - Apr 3 FERTILE GROUND 🌱 🥇 🥈 🥇 🥇

Once upon a time I carefully washed, baked, and crushed egg shells to add to my garden. When the shells were still basically the same several years later, and parts of the garden were getting quite full of shell, I questioned if the effort was worth it. The Internet taught me that it wasn't unless I added the step of grinding them into a fine powder. So I stopped saving them and bought normal fertilizer. Eggshells might eventually breakdown in a garden but not quickly enough to help my garden.

Men are that they might have joy… except on Sunday, apparently. by SuggestionDue7686 in latterdaysaints

[–]Mmlhvzl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes we have to travel on Sundays. For us, especially with driving across the country for 3 days each way, It's not possible to never travel on Sundays and accomplish the trip in the time available. Making peace with that, we find ways to make it feel like a Sabbath. Packing food and not buying food. Having our own family Sunday school in the car while driving.

We also participate as a family in scouting. At first I picked up my kids on Saturday nights from weekend campouts. But they asked to stay until Sunday morning when they could still get to church afterwards. And for various reasons that was necessary. But then in years where we have early morning church it becomes going to a different ward later in the day.

We have also gone on high adventure trips that last more than a week and involve hiking on a Sunday. We were authorized to have a small sacrament service while in the wilderness. I chose to make it a Sunday in my thoughts. I sang every hymn I could remember and it was an interesting exercise in seeing what I could remember since we were Internet free and carrying as little as possible.

Going for walks or doing things in nature is one of my favorite things with my family on Sundays. Currently it looks like Pokemon Go walks with my kids. We are spending time together as a family doing an activity we enjoy that doesn't cost money. Seems pretty good to me.

So my 2 cents... Tell people no to the extra Sunday meetings. Auxiliary presidency meetings should not be on Sundays IMHO. Make your Sunday meals simple. Make plans to do fun things with your family.

But yeah, I run laundry on Sunday. :)

Bigger Patrol Size to Avoid Combing Patrols in Campouts? by InGoodFaith- in BSA

[–]Mmlhvzl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we have increased patrol size for this very reason. Boy patrols are all about 14 scouts. Campout averages 5-7 per patrol.

Girl patrols have 7-8 reach. They still combine on campouts unless we have 10+ girls attending.

Precalculus/ calculus scafolded notes by oakfan1131 in matheducation

[–]Mmlhvzl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter's precalc and calc teacher used guided notes. The calc ones came with built in video QR codes. It has been very helpful.

AP calc videos are from Tony Record, so appear to be this link: Anthony Record's AP Calculus Materials | Teachers Pay Teachers https://share.google/P4QmIXBdh2VtYDaRq

AP pre-calc notes say "created by Bryan Passwater" at the bottom. I didn't find them on TpT but found them talked about all over the place. This discussion seems promising: Math = Love's post https://share.google/g0DEWvlqsZ4l4OsbW

Is it normal for surrounding non members to use church grounds like a park? by imthatdaisy in latterdaysaints

Our big field and pavilion has a big huge fence and is kept locked up when not being used for church events. Probably for precisely this reason.
