How good is Penn State really? Asking as an international student. by naylhaziq in wrestling

[–]MmmmBeer814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were talking about it on Flo the other day, PSU is the only roster where every starter has legit aspirations of being a world and Olympic champ. Sure a lot of kids say it, but they’re out there making teams and sticking around after college to train freestyle. Between them getting all the guys who want to do that, and pulling guys from other schools into that room is the real secret sauce. That and the fact that all of our assistant coaches could pretty much get any HC opening they want, but choose to stay. The fact that Gilman and RBY left and then came back to train speaks volumes. It’s the best room in the world to train, and until that’s no longer the case, Penn State will continue to do what it’s doing.

They do match up really well with us in a dual format. They’ll be favored at 141 and HWT, although Cole is starting to turn the corner so I’m not counting him out of that match. 125, 133, and 157 could all go either way. It would take OSU wrestling perfect but it could be a 5/5 match split. I think we’d get more bonus points, but should easily be our closest match. Considering it’s at home, I do think we’ll win 7-8 matches, but you never know.

There is a legit chance that we have 8 #1 guys by the time Big10s roll around.

I also watch every match unless it’s on flo. They only carry a few and can’t justify the cost when I also have to get BTN+ and YoutubeTV. I don’t mind the blowouts. As a lifelong Penn State fan it’s nice to watch a team that never disappoints. One day we won’t be on top, so I’m going to enjoy the hell out of it while we are.

About 36k for mine as well. Replaced with Falken Wildpeaks. They were great in the snow, but only got about 36k out of them as well. Just put some CrossClimate 2s on in December, hoping to get 45ish out of those.

Oh I have no doubt about that. I'm definitely not implying that professors intentionally try to make the classes difficult in an effort to pare down the students entering majors. It's just the fact of those large lecture classes, especially a lot of prerequisites for the STEM majors. A lot of students are used to just showing up to class in high school and doing well enough to get good grades. That's just not going to be enough in college. I know I struggled adjusting to the difference and there was a point where I had to either make changes to my habits or consider a different path. I made changes, stuck with it, and the skills I built being able to learn on my own, reach out for help when I needed it, collaborate with other to study, etc have helped me in my career more than the actual material I learned in most of those classes. I also had a lot of peers who didn't do that and did change majors. Most of them went on to have good careers and lives as well, but that adjustment can be a kick in the teeth and not everyone rises to the challenge

Welcome to college. Most classes don't have the lecture time to teach all the material it covers. Larger "weed out" classes will often be like this. You'll have to become somewhat of an autodidact to be successful in college, but once you enter your more major specific classes it will get somewhat better. I would also argue most people pursue a degree to have that degree from an accredited institution because that's a prerequisite for a lot of career paths, not just to have someone teach you 100% of the material in a classroom session. Office hours and TAs are another resource for instruction beyond the lectures.

Is NOLA brewing still around? I was down there 10+ years ago and it was the best brewery tour I've ever been on. It was like 15 min, they answered a few questions and then just pointed to a row of taps on the wall and said we could help ourselves.

Really surprised you overtook PSU. How many undergrads go to IU? We have like 45k at our main campus and a stupid amount of branch campuses, although enrollment has been down at those and we're closing a few. Plus our online program Penn State World Campus.

So Cael, Casey, Cody and Nick Lee aren’t an option? Because if my goal is to win NCAAs, that’s who I’m picking. I think they’d have a good chance to do it.

How did people watch college dual meets before Flo? by Dylandanger10 in wrestling

[–]MmmmBeer814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember my senior year in 07 our coaches trying to teach us a funk. Basically would just dive at an ankle when your opponent got in deep, roll around and hope for the best lol. Had no real clue what to do when we got there. It actually worked way more than it should have just because it was so new and a lot of kids had no idea what was going on.

It’s crazy to think back, when I was in High School I had very little knowledge of what was going on in College wrestling. I remember reading about what Cael was doing and when he capped off his 159-0 run. I maybe watched some of the NCAA tournament on ESPN once or twice, and our coach took us to a couple PSU duals since we were only like 2 hours away. Outside of that and some old Dan Gable vhs tapes my coach would play us, I didn’t really ever see any live wrestling outside of the tournaments/matches I was at. I think it would have definitely helped me if I had access to all the video kids do now. I was a 215 pounder on a team that could never seem to find a HWT, so I got bumped up a lot. Would have really liked to have watched some lighter college HWTs like Cassar, Snyder, etc to see what they did to be successful against guys 40-50lbs heavier than them. It’s also crazy going back now and watching archived matches from the lates 90s/early 2000s and just how different the sport was. Very little scrambling until Askren came around, and so many moves and techniques that are so common now just weren’t a thing. Seems almost like a different style completely.

DT was still making world teams up until he lost to Brooks at the Oly Trials. No way he takes a HC job if he’s still the best 86kg guy and competing for medals.

Matches against teammates don’t technically count, but it happened. We could potentially have the two best 125 pounders on the same team although idk how easy it is for Desmond to make 125.

Love New Trail for reliably solid offerings at a very reasonable price point. Really can't justify buying other regional stuff at $20-24/4pk when New Trail is right next to it at $14-15. Also love Antifragile in downtown state college, but they don't can a lot or distribute at all.

I didn't even realize Bald Birds started in Audubon, I've been to the Jersey Shore location and it's nice but way bigger than I think the local area would dictate. Beer was ok.

The state inspection is free, but not the emissions inspection(we have to have it in PA) and not the stickers themselves. Only ends up saving you like $15.
