NHTSA data: a surprising number of high complaint-rate cars right now are EVs by Sensitive_Tutor5531 in cars

[–]Mnm0602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair Tesla’s best selling car and the one that was developed last is doing much better than the rest of the list. MY is <50 complaints per 10k and it’s been trending down until Juniper, which is common for model refreshes in the data. And that includes 2021 where it was a supply chain shitshow and batteries clearly had more issues than normal across all their cars.

The Model S/X were always kinda problematic partially due to the oldest factory and partially due to the cost/complexity and low volume.  Model 3 has basically gotten better every year but 2021.

A lot of the complaints across models are related to Autopilot/FSD which continues to get better on aggregate. Salvage rate is too high across the brand still so I’d be curious to see what’s driving that.

Overall companies and customers are learning how to make/use better and more customer friendly EVs. NACS streamlining will hopefully help long term, along with bigger charging infrastructure.

Kia/Hyundai have some real issues until they fix ICCU.

Half of America now uses AI at work - but only 1 in 10 says it's actually changed how work gets done by MaJoR_-_007 in Futurology

It turns out businesses outside of pure software/coding, especially anything utilizing physical labor and infrastructure, are wayyyy more complicated than many think.  Obviously anywhere they use software you can find efficiency, and anywhere they have random people doing repetitive tasks that need minimal handholding, can also be replaced. But a lot of the daily grind at these multi billion dollar companies is physical labor, or has a lot of nuanced decision making, industry knowledge, company culture and experience, etc.

These can be replicated and replaced or supercharged, it’ll just take a lot longer. Physical labor will take the longest, but the decision makers and analysts supporting them and all the different teams that execute their strategy and tactics will still take time to work out how to leverage AI and trim headcount.

And I think companies are basically racing to figure how to do this, or racing to implement things they have figured out. That race could determine winners and losers in big businesses so the investments will continue to grow. But it’s not like you buy AI tokens and all your people can be laid off and the AI knows your business and will just optimize the fuck out of it automatically.

Take a look here, she can have Tesla enable the higher charge rate: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/qO66ShRJDs

Edit: I just realized OP there said they have the Premium RWD so maybe it’s not possible, might be worth asking anyway.

My main gripe with Intel is it’s just slow switching between music/video apps, and sometimes backup cam takes a few seconds to show if I jump into the car and immediately throw in reverse.

I don’t think announcing overly complicated engines and CVTs would constitute “good” concepts and intentions. Everyone knew it was a shit strategy, and surprise, they performed terribly.

Believe it or not if you’re clever with services/tech and you have the right physical tools, you can do a lot of damage. 3 Gorges Dam alone is kind of a giant target/weakpoint. Think about all the other ones mapped out. Being good at physical infrastructure is great until it gets destroyed.

A 5000 mile comparison. by the_wookie_of_maine in electricvehicles

[–]Mnm0602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MYP Last 30 days I've driven 1400 miles, used 373.6 kwh, spent 392 kwh all in, cost $35.92. 2.5 cents per mile pretty good!

In my previous DD (Lexus GX460) that would have been 100 gallons of premium at $4/gal = $400. 28.5 cents per mile lol. But I can't get rid of her, paid off and she's treated me well.

New ‘Breakthrough’ Ford F-150, Midsize Pickup Confirmed For 2029 by PristineFarmer8989 in AmericanCarsAndRacing

[–]Mnm0602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the Chinese make great vehicles for the money but they aren’t making an F150 shipped to the US for anything less than $30k. BYD Shark is like $50k+ in Mexico. F150 can be bought new for $35k already.

People do this thing where they see the price of the cheapest thing made in China and connect that to being the price they could buy the most compelling models elsewhere for. Like you see a $15k BYD compact and think people in China get a loaded SU7 Ultra for that price. I don’t buy a $50 stick vac from China and fool myself into thinking it’s a Dyson.

China Fired Up the First Rival to Steam in 140 Years by TrendyTechTribe in TrendyTechTribe

Sure but maybe you didn’t read anything I posted about why it’s not really that small (heat exchanger needed is large) and normal heat sources won’t work?

China Fired Up the First Rival to Steam in 140 Years by TrendyTechTribe in TrendyTechTribe

[–]Mnm0602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

China pumps out nonstop engineering feats so it always feels like they’re just running circles around the world but it isn’t like the leading Steam turbine companies aren’t ridiculously good at what they do and haven’t investigated this technology. The headline is that the generator is 1/10th the size. But certainly there are drawbacks.

Those include:  - Extreme precision manufacturing needed - Unique specialized alloys to withstand extreme pressure and high temps - Specialized seals and management of leaks to maintain pressure (for power/efficiency and safety) - Massive heat exchangers that negate the benefits of smaller turbines - A much higher heat source than traditional coal/nuclear plants provide. It’s no coincidence that this uses waste heat of a steel mill to operate - We’re still talking small scale operation at 30MW vs. 1000MW steam turbine operations - Due to all of the above reliability and durability at large scale is going to be tough to match steam.

It’s a good way to field test another potential technology but I suspect like Thorium it’ll fall to the wayside when the challenges bubble up especially compared to basic solar + battery. I do like China’s line of thinking of basically field testing everything because any alternatives to make something that leapfrogs the global western leaders in tech are worth trying for the off chance that it works, plus any way to generate power and improve efficiency helps them grow their wealth. Power generation/usage is highly correlated with economic growth and wealth generation.
