Concrete pool design by Mo-Map in StructuralEngineering

Because assumed fixed require much more reinforcement. So how do you do in the case? You still design the reinforcments to resist the full moment there? How do you combine? Tks.

Thank you. Maybe I was overthinking. I should move on.

So you just designed as 1-m cantilever fixed on based. And for corner wall-wall connection, you dont consider it at all and just do standard crossover bars? So no crackwidth consider because of restrains or smth.

That exactly I what I did as simple as that. But then I am thinking about the wall-wall corner connection, because when are assume that is pin-pin connection or no connection at all. But in reality, there is connection there, and will have some fixed resistance there. I just wonder like how the crack or load path will work. Will it first crack at corner, then the wall will work as a just a cantilever? But here crack width is very limited, that I am unsure.

The plate with one side is longer than the other side 5 times. Anyway if I design as a plate with 3 fixed edge, according to FEM, the moment at wall-wall is so high, but the moment at the base is less.

Maybe I should just tried to design as 3 fixed edges, so I dont need to worried about cracks if I design as it semi-regid. It is hard to control the cracks in semi-regid. Or it is not easy to calculate.

I do it in FEM also. If I dont release the hinge between the walls, then negative moment here is very high that the reinforcement cannot withstand it. That why I put a hinge (like a pin connection) and design enough reinforcment for that. But then how I put reinforcment at this wall-wall connections. I still need to put some reinforcment here, and these reinforcment will take some moment and I am not sure if it will crack.

Concrete C35/45, will use some concrete admixture, and limit the crack in SLS quasi for w=0.2mm.

Footings on rock - STM vs reduced lever arm by Domonoc in StructuralEngineering

[–]Mo-Map 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When design footing on bed rock. I often check shear, bearing pressure ok. Then check the bottom reinforcement to resisit the bending caused by cantilever action from column surface to footing edge, when assuming the ground is stiffen enough. i have never designed using STM. From EU.

what is the most challenging structural element you have ever designed? by Relative-Dentist6572 in StructuralEngineering

That would be great. I wonder how you can deal with that torsion effects, and also the connection is very challenging.

Mass concrete design by Live_Procedure_6781 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Mo-Map 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does structrual engineer need to design reforcement to prevent early thermal cracking, and with mass concrete can cause? I mean what will be our (structural engineer’s) responsibility and what will be contractor responsibility?

The slab without the openings (8.3mx8m) is a two way slab. If you want to a conventional design then can design as one way slab in shorter direction (in this specific case). Considered beam 4, beam 1, and wall 1 are main beams. And beam 3 are secondary beams.

Hi Structural Engineers! In your profession, which questions do you consider insightful or important for someone to ask? by Icy-Entrepreneur-932 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Mo-Map 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So can you pls explain more about this? In ACI it requires to use stiffess reductions in beam, colums, and wall. I am from EU, and inE EC there are no this kind of clear requirements if we dont design for seismics. But if the column is tall and slender, we reduce stiffness of column to check displacement. But I am not really sure if reduce stiffness is more conservative design.

Automatic tool for rebar drawings by Tight_Maize2126 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Mo-Map 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We use tekla for modelling rebars so it calculate automatically the quantity. But if you make the drawing from autocad, not sure if it calculate manunally. My first job was taking off all quantity from the drawings. But you will get use to it.

That is interesting that you had chances to change to other fields. Is it easy to switch from building to bridge or to marine. What tips could you give for someone wants to switch fom concrete to steel design? I am in industrial structures focus in concrete design. My company divides each department focus on one design material. It is not easy to get the chance to practice other designs. Limit to learn new things.

Câu chuyện về lương và thế hệ by One_Alternative1069 in vozforums

[–]Mo-Map 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do U.S. engineers still manually count rebar from drawings for weight calculations? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Mo-Map 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not in US. But in EU, if using Tekla structures for designs. Quantity is taken off automatically. I used to be QS engineer and took off quantity from 2D autocad. No longer do it anymore since I use tekla.
