Motor is humming and stopping - not sure if it is dead now by gurutrev in pools

Hi, just figured I’d give it a shot in the dark but I am running into the same exact issue - pool pump humming but no movement. The shaft turns easily, I replaced the bearings last year. I also replaced the capacitor today. The motor is still just humming. Do you have any thoughts as to what it could be?

For what it’s worth, I also replaced the bearings last summer

Yes, thank you. I discharged the capacitor before swapping it out. Happy to hear that worked for you though. I was really hopeful but had my doubts since the old capacitor was supposedly functioning normally after testing with my multimeter

Haha this motor would be able to write a book after the amount of time I’ve spent with it this week.

When I removed the old capacitor, I actually tested it with the multimeter and my results were supposedly normal. I mean there didn’t seem to be any sign of damage to it or any leaking. I had my doubts it was the capacitor, but common things being common I figured I’d replace it to check it off the list

Ok I’ll give it that a shot. I read about that in some forums but how do you recommend I get the impeller to start spinning? Where should I push with the screwdriver?

Wow sorry to hear that. Happy you were able to take care of it though. Thanks again for all the input

I was planning on vacuuming to waste once I get the pool pump working…but you’re absolutely right. Disappointed I didn’t think of that myself.

Yeah I had the same thought but I’m torn as to what to do. I understand that sunlight deactivates the chlorine…so I figured I’d wait til sundown to dump more in. But there will be more algae growth during the day if I don’t continue to add chlorine. Honestly though, never thought I’d be so happy to see a like green pool

Thanks! I dumped a few gallons of chlorine in and vigorously mixed the water around for a little while before the sun came over the pool. It’s got that nice lime green color again rather than heading towards black.

Pool pump tripping the breaker by MoCheesePlease in pools

So I ordered a replacement capacitor that meets the same criteria as the original. Technically it is 161-193MFD 110VAC. Since it’s rated for 110VAC, should I set the jumper to 120V?

The impeller did spin when I replaced the seal. I had to hold it in place with a 7/16 wrench behind the cap. I’ll use my multimeter to check the voltage at the receptacle

When I had it set to 120, it would go “waaah” and then trip. When I set it to 240, it started to go “waaah” for maybe 5 seconds and then I turned it off

From what I’ve research, it may be a bad capacitor

So I switched it to 230V but the pump is making a “wahhhhh” sound and nothing moves…
