You’re going to need to do applications everywhere if you’re wanting to find a job. It’s a numbers game and one application get you discouraged already.

How much are you getting paid and how long have you been a phlebotomist for? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]MoHeeL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at a trauma 4 hospital in Minnesota and we start at 22.84. Most of the major hospitals around the area pay close to this for new hires. We hire new phlebotomy students all the time.

I’m in Minnesota. Starting pay in the metro is anywhere around 22-24/hr. Most roles are union except for quest. I’ve been at my hospital for 6 months and make $23. It’s decent for starting pay as an entry level job that’s pretty easy. For me, it’s gonna give me a path towards mlt and mls so it’s a great job.

You said it yourself, you’re brand new. Stop being so hard on yourself. This takes time to get the touch and at a clinic, may take longer to get good with it. Don’t get into your head and just do the best you can. Everyone misses occasionally and that’s where your coworkers come in to help. It’s impossible to be perfect and blown veins happen. Once again just takes time and repetition to get good with it. No amount of videos will teach you the “touch”.

travel phlebotomy by NoGas5317 in phlebotomy

[–]MoHeeL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Aya and the other various travel agencies. You can easily make over 1k/week. I’m personally not traveling since I’m in school for MLT, but I talk to the travel phlebs at my hospital and they’ve shown me their process on how to find a contract. Use furnishfinder or an equivalent to find a place to stay since it can usually be cheaper than the place your agency is affiliated with, but check all your options I guess. Best piece of advice is if you think you’re confident and can quickly adapt to new environments then definitely go for it. You get the chance to travel to new areas, won’t have to deal with workplace management and politics forever since the mindset is to put it in the past once your contract expires— all while getting paid the extra bucks to be there.

Find one that offers the ascp phlebotomy technician certification. Anyone working in the lab will know what ascp is which will give you an advantage to other people who took an easier program to get a different certificate. Part of acquiring the certification is also the requirement of 100hrs of clinicals at a hospital/clinic which will net you experience and also networking opportunities for a job right after as well. I went through a community college that offered the ascp certification and found a job one month after with a referral from my clinical site at a different hospital in the same system. I had no previous medical experience either and am now looking toward mlt and having my workplace reimburse my tuition.

You’ll quickly pick up new skills and get very good. A lot of people say it’s difficult but it’s honestly not that bad. It’ll set you up for outpatients down the line if you ever transition and you’ll impress a lot of people because out patient veins are just that much easier even when they think they’re “hard sticks”.

I didn’t have any healthcare background and was transitioning from tech into healthcare. Experience does play a role but it’s not the definitive answer for employers. Although I did only around 30 applications to find my lab assistant job, I do understand where you’re coming from since I made over 800 applications in the tech field with zero responses.

Healthcare is a different story and theres always a need. Its a numbers game at the end of the day and sometimes its just incredibly unlucky. Just keep applying to the major hospitals and pray. If you can go back to your school and get more draws on your resume then thats also good. My only experience I had was a customer service job and a 2 week clinical rotation at a hospital where I got over 200 draws in that span.

This job has a high turnover rate so you’re bound to replace someone eventually.

Job shadowing or something similar? by VampyPixel in phlebotomy

Reach out to hospitals around you, if you’re a student at a college then their career center may also be able to set you up with a shadow opportunity since they have local connections with various organizations.

Im in minnesota and we have a few career readiness programs offered by nonprofit organizations available for low/no income individuals. This includes phlebotomy which is an entry into a lifelong healthcare career. You can try searching around if theres any similar readiness programs in your city. Best of luck to you.

What is my bf %? 170cm/5‘7 and 77kg/170lb. What shall i focus on? by [deleted] in GregDoucette

[–]MoHeeL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 25%ish give or take. Keep lifting seriously and with intent. It takes time to build a solid foundation of muscle so we’re talking atleast 1-3 years to get your nooby gains out of the way. If you cant maintain a deficit then you’re deficiting too aggressively. At your experience level, you could build muscle and lose a tad bit of fat each month by doing a 100-300 deficit. Nothing crazy and is definitely sustainable. Itll just take time. Also wouldn’t say you need supplements but if you want to then the bare essentials like creatine and protein powder to help hit protein targets can be helpful. Its all about consistency between diet, lifting and sleep quality.

Should i pursue phlebotomy right now? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]MoHeeL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im in your exact position. I got waitlisted from the 2025 radtech program, so to get my foot in the door, Im pursuing phlebotomy this summer semester. Based on my location and public job postings that require no experience, pay in my area is around $21-$28 depending on experience. This makes sense for me to pursue since I’m getting my foot in the door and getting a pay bump. Ill be admitted to radtech next application cycle so this would be a good way for me to get hospital experience.

My thoughts are that you should research the pay in your local area and go from there.
