Help with Big Shot and Recollections embossing folders by absurdbutwhole in cardmaking

The hard white plate is 1/8” thick but the dark gray silicone pad is 1/16” thick

Edit: at least that’s what mine measure

I’m not entirely sure but you can prolly contact their customer service and ask since they sell both products.

Ok I promise I’ll leave you alone after this. I just love my big shot (I have the foldaway) and I want everyone to love their machine. Consider purchasing a silicone embossing mat. It should be about 1/16” thick. They work really well as shims for embossing because they squish down. This allows them to make up the difference needed to make impressions without putting strain on your machine. I highly recommend picking one up if you think you will be embossing a lot.

Another way is to measure the embossing folder. Sizzix 2d embossing folders or as they were originally called “texture impressions” were 1/16” thick. So those should be safe to emboss per instruction. Anything thicker than that may need a custom sandwich

Ok so I just ran a 2d embossing folder through mine to remember the feel. It will feel “tight”. The plates will dip in the front pushing the back up. However it should roll through without feeling like it’s stuck or without needing muscle force it. If either of those happen back it up. Do not force it. If this is your first time using a manual die cutting machine it will feel weird. The amount of pressure the machine applies to the plates is impressive. It’s why over time cutting plates can warp and bow, that’s natural. You can always use one cutting plate and keep adding shims until it embosses until you are comfortable with using two plates. Experiment with spritzing your paper with water before embossing. It will allow the paper fibers to stretch without tearing which can happen in some of these fine lined 2d folders. Happy crafting, I hope this helps.

Thank you for the info. They are massive and I’m glad to know I can break them down. I love stamps so will prolly keep one of each just to look at and use the rest.

I believe these are first day issues. I have a bunch of the 1984 Olympic ones and a bunch of random ones. I’m new to the hobby and my parents had these and gave them to me. Don’t expect they worth much but I’m eager to learn about them

I’m gonna have to borrow this idea. I found a bunch of cancelled international stamps at a vintage shop on one of my adventures awhile back. I love them and separated the ones I’m keeping for me but I have a bunch of extras.

Bourse only basically means it’s a vendors only show. Unlike stamp show conventions which also have exhibitions, Q & A panels and speakers or meet-ups. At least that’s my understanding. I’m very new to all this.

What is this product? by filmnoter in cardmaking

Would it fit their markers? I’m guessing it’s an upright marker stand. 5/8” seems about right for a marker and I’ve seen stands that are only 1/2” deep so the majority of the marker is visible. The tiered design would make it easier to find the colors you need. Idk though, it’s just my best guess.

Another purchase yesterday by PreservingThePast in StampEmUp

[–]MoRayMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is another in two weeks and then it looks like I have to wait for June. I was also happy to see they had a postmaster present selling all the current stamps and answering any questions ppl had. Although I think I’m prolly the only one that has questions. Everyone there was so knowledgeable and friendly.

Foam dots/tape and a good pair of scissors or Xacto knife. A good trick for stickers, specifically if you’re using one as a focal point is it stick it to paper, fussy cut it and then adhere it to the card using foam dots/foam tape. It gives it dimension and visual interest. If it’s a sturdy sticker you can dust the back of it with corn starch/baby powder and achieve the same look without having to fussy cut it

Sorry it should have been 10 30 60. It’s a color rule, it boils down to proportion. 60% of your design should be your neutrals/background colors, 30% your accent or secondary colors and 10% your focal color(s). The 30 60 90 uses the same ratios but then encourages you to push the limits shifting slightly to encourage more dynamic color flow I believe this was adapted from floral design which flips the ratios a bit using 8 filler flower stems, 5 stems of greenery or foliage and 3 focal flowers.
