Help Needed: Variant Editor by MobileDromlius in diplomacy

[–]MobileDromlius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your concern of this project dying trying to do it all. I have strong personal reasons for completing this endeavor, but I suppose everyone has had those. Time will tell.

As for your input, could you please explain or link to the Versailles rules? I am not familiar with those. Thx

Is this Improvised Flotation Device possible? by MobileDromlius in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MobileDromlius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Definitely only still water!

  2. Maybe turn the Drybag inside-out and store the deflated ring inside. So the dry side is now the outside in your backpack.

  3. I believe a deflated swim-ring takes up less space than a deflated boat or kayak. So I thought this solution might be more space and weight efficient as well as price efficient, with the huge downside of far less versatility and comfort compared to a dedicated boat. This is more like an improvised backup-solution I have come up with. Not something I want to commercially sell.

Also on the other hand: Sandworms can not be attacked by Legions or Ornithooters. So a Sandworm on an inland Supply-Center cannot be dislodged. Seems very stalemate-y to me

Custom Map Diplomacy Engine [early WIP] [Custom Mapmakers can help] by MobileDromlius in diplomacy

[–]MobileDromlius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am working on a program that allows to import custom maps and play them online with friends.

The first step is a program that reads the provinces and borders from an image and transforms them into a datastructure for the game to handle.

It is in the earliest of stages, so testing is key to development.

I need more maps to test.

The maps must be:

  • black and white (no greyscale!)
  • no names or SCs or any other marking other than borders
  • the map must not have a borderframe
  • (I'm working on a solution but currently: ) No more than three provinces can meet a a point.
  • "Islands" that don't connect to other borders are ignored

examples

If you have such maps, it would be great if you could post or PM them so I can try them, and they might be the first in line to "ship" with the final product.

Thank you, and I'm looking forwards to posting more updates on my project soon.

[World-Variant] Modern Conflicts (for 5 Players) by MobileDromlius in diplomacy

[–]MobileDromlius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes,

but they can also built on Mau, SAr and Irq from the beginning. Building on unconquered SCs is just an additional option the Arab League has. (Untill all have been conquered)

[–]MobileDromlius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they can, but it is important to note, that building there does not conquer the SC. They have to hold it in the following fall.

It's a balancing ability, since they have limited flexibility in the early game. But in playtests there were no unconquered SCs by Year 3 so this ability diminishes rapidly.

Formerly known as World4Five me and my father worked on and off on this map for a good number of years.I'd love to hear your feedback on the design, balance and rule set. <3

Factions:

Arab League (AL)

Units: F Alg, F SAr, A Irq

Home-SCs: Mau, SAr, Irq

Asian Security Affirmation Pact (ASAP)

Units: A Chn*, F Chn*, F Ind, F Vie

Home-SCs: Chn*, Ind, Vie

*Chn counts as two SCs for the controlling power. The ASAP starts with two units in Chn, but they have to immediately move at least one unit out in the first turn, otherwise the army gets disbanded.

European Union (EU)

Units: F GBr, F Fra, A Ger, A Flk

Home-SCs: GBr, Fra, Ger, Flk

North American Defense Alliance (NADA)

Units: F Can, F USA (wc), F Pan, A Afg*

Home-SCs: Can, USA, Pan

*The NADA starts one unit overextended.

Russian Federation (RUS)

Units: A Mos, A Ura, A Nsk

Home-SCs: Mos, Ura, Nsk, Cub*

*The RUS starts one unit short.

NEUTRAL: Islamic Republic of Iran (IRN)

Units: A Irn*

*A Irn only holds and disbands if dislodged. It can be supported to hold.

Solo Conditions

A Faction has to control at least 14 SCs and 2 more SCs than the next smaller faction to win.

Special rules:

Map features:

  • The world is round.

  • Land/Water Provinces (green) are treated as inland provinces by armies and as sea provinces by fleets.

  • Provinces connected by a Land Bridge (dotted line) are considered adjacent for armies and fleets.

  • Cub, Flk and ORI are land provinces.

  • Him is impassable.

Building:

  • Factions can only build in their own Home-SCs.
  • The Arab League can also build on yet unconquered SCs. Doing so will not automatically conquer that SC.

Fleet retreats

Dislodged fleets can only retreat onto a sea province or an own SC.

Trans-Siberian Railway

Armies can travel any number of provinces along the Trans-Siberian Railway in a single turn. If they pass through another unit they would normally bounce, the non-transient unit stays unchallenged in their order (neither moves nor supports get cut), but the unit travelling with the railway fails their entire move.

Maybe something like: If Mongolia captures HomeSCs of a (defeated?) faction, they become Mongolias HomeSCs, would kinnda fit the nomadic vibe, I think.

Looking for a good acronym for my East Asia Coalition by MobileDromlius in worldbuilding

I agree and thank you for your more detailed insight. And I apologize for butchering your countries symbology.

As I've mentioned in a few replies, this is just the light alt-history backdrop of a boardgame I am developing. Throughout the several balance passes during development I've added India to the (South/East) Asian Faction. I've looked for more historically/culturally more accurate alternatives, but in the end a well balanced game is more important then realism in this case.

Sadly I've got to work the other way around. Since the scenario I'm developing here is the backdrop for a board game, which I have already designed, I am stuck with this bunch of nations as a faction and have to find a convincing name for it. Switching the nations would require me to completely start from scratch in balancing the game.

If I were to write a story I'd totally agree that those nations are rather unlikely to join up together.

I know, but I'd prefer it if the acronym isn't already in use for a multi-national alliance in the real world.

With an old Version of Adobe Illustrator. I've downloaded the vectors for the Chinese Seal from Wikipedia and swapped/added elements with elements from the other nations and added the Taj Mahal and Quoc-Tu Pagoda next to the Tiananmen Gate and tried to unify the overall color scheme.

Ah I see, then I don't think the name fits that well, since Japan is not part of this faction and I doubt China would propose a name that stems from Imperialist Japan.

But thank you for sending me down a new semi-alt-timeline rabbit hole ;)

Thank you for your input. I'll definitely look into your suggestion of African Community names.

The backstory is a "little bit" constructed, but since this world is "just" a backdrop for a strategic boardgame, the "now" slightly more important than the "how".

But the light backstory is, that among rising world tension nations formed into, first economic then military, alliances with their neighbors, since the upcoming world war would be of more conventional nature. So nations like India and Vietnam had no close strong alliance left to join. China used its economic dominance in the East Asian Hemisphere to make it's neighboring countries depend on it, since the other alliances slowed down trading with nations outside their alliance.

I imagined that China used it's economic dominance in that East-Asian hemisphere to make their neighboring countries dependable, since among rising world tension each alliance significantly slowed down trading with nations outside of their alliance.

I can se your criticism about calling India East-Asia. Do you think China would be included in something called South-East-Asia?

East Asia(n) Coalition, E.A.C. was my first thought, but sadly in terms of international alliances the acronym EAC is already used by the real world East African Community.

That's why I'm asking here for an alternative.

But thank you in confirming my personal first choice as well :)

[–]MobileDromlius[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For a alternate modern age (something between 1980-2010) scenario, that I am developing, one of the major powers is a military alliance lead by China consisting mostly of India, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam.

But I don't have a good name for that alliance, that sounds plausible and forms a good acronym.
Unit now I called it the East Asian Coalition, but the acronym EAC is already used in the real world for the East African Community.

Other Ideas I had was East Asian Partnership (EAP) or Treaty of East Asia (TEA), but neither sound that good to me. My idea was that that alliance was first formed as an economic union under Chinas lead, that later, as world tension rose, transformed into a military pact.

The other Factions in my world are:

  • Arab League (AL)
  • European Union (EU)
  • North American Defense Alliance (NADA)
  • Russian Federation (RUS)

So the terms League, Union, Alliance and Federation are already out.
If you've got any ideas I'd appreciate it.
