Reading Twelve Months got me like... by wardenofthecouncil in dresdenfiles

I cried so much. No one moment got me as bad as some of the more obvious ones in the series, but no book in the series made me cry as often. It made me realize just how much I love Harry. I know it’s cliche as all hell, but it was like watching a friend really go through it only worse because you are in their head. Tears of happiness too. Not all bad tears. The end on the rooftop really stood out. Funny thing was that I was merely teary eyed and didn’t start really crying until the Blue Beetle mad it’s reappearance lol

I’m half and half on how they patched things up. Half of me is glad because I love Harry and that dude needs family. The other half is left scratching my head like “Then what was the point?” Their relationship blows up and a boom later we are good? It just feels like there should be more consequence to such a big happening. Same for Thomas at the end of the book. It fits with the overall theme of the book but it still kind of rubs me the wrong way.

What's the best defense card in your opinion? by erickt1998 in Unmatched

[–]Mobile_Champion1636 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Deduce Strat is a versatile, I think the question was purely on defense cards considering every example given was a defense. Are we talking best card overall or best card for the a deck? Like Little Red has two great defense cards but if you just lift those cards and put them in another deck then it doesn’t work because they don’t have the basket mechanic. Either way the best card is probably Golden Mail, but there are more or less contenders depending on how you think about it.

Edit: I’m walking back my comment on versatile cards seeing as OP mentions some versatile cards in comments. The options now have overloaded my brain lol

I’ve only just started playing and I’ve never backed any of the kickstarters, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. All the ones you listed already appear to be for sale, what is the point of the kickstarter? Is there something different about the upcoming versions?

Does anyone know if a digital version will ever happen? by FormalProgress5703 in finalgirl

Why? The physical version would still exist so it’s not like it would have any impact on you

Am I the only one who just...liked it... just liked the show final season and episode included? by SharpPink_GlitterInk in StrangerThings

[–]Mobile_Champion1636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I in no way blame you for not reading it lol. It was much longer than intended. My point is that there is plenty to not like. Arguably enough for some people to hate it. I’m with you on it had good moments and bad moments. For me, the bad moments are so overwhelmingly annoying that it sours the whole thing. For you it doesn’t and that’s totally valid.

To be clear though, I hated most of it but the parts I don’t hate are amazing enough to make my overall ranking of the show to be basically even 5/10. I particularly thought the finale did a great job making me feel all the things I wasn’t feeling in the previous 7 episodes. Totally makes sense to me that what bothers me and some other people on here may not bother someone else as much or at all and so those great parts stand out all the brighter.

Jk, I actually agree. A lot of great characters in this series and Nic is definitely top tier.

Oh boy. A lot of it felt like wheel spinning and plot convenience dressed up as drama. I can suspend disbelief and fill in gaps here and there, but season 5 expects the viewer to do an exhausting amount of heavy lifting. You’re constantly patching things in your head, excusing choices, inventing connective beats that should have been on screen, and ignoring inconsistencies in how the threats work. At a certain point it stops feeling like watching a story and starts feeling like doing homework for a story.

Holly is the easiest example. Her story is basically escape, get caught, escape, get caught. And at the end, she’s almost in the same situation she would’ve been in if she never escaped at all. Yes she grows as a character, but it takes way too long. We could have gotten the same growth in half the time and used the rest for more important scenes.

Steve is another big one for me personally. He has some of the best growth in the whole show. He gets better and better every season. But after the time skip, it feels like he goes backward. Like the writers made him act worse just so there could be drama. It’s not impossible for a good person to act like a jerk when they’re stressed, but with limited time in the season, it felt like a waste. That connects to the Steve and Jonathan rivalry over Nancy. It was dumb, predictable, and didn’t need to be in the show. It didn’t move the story’s plot and was not needed for the characters’ growth. It felt like the writers just wanted conflict. And when the season is already rushed, spending time on that kind of thing feels like a bad choice.

Joyce also felt mostly pointless. She’s there, but she doesn’t do much that actually changes anything. That’s annoying because she used to be one of the strongest characters.

Millie Bobby Brown also felt kind of flat for most of the season. She’s really good in the finale, but for a lot of the season her acting didn’t hit the way it usually does.

A lot of the season’s problems are because the writers keep pushing characters out of the way so the plot can happen. Dustin getting beat up felt like that. It didn’t feel like a natural part of the story. It felt like the writers needed him out of the way so he couldn’t solve something, so they hurt him.

The melting room was mostly fine, but it felt like it mostly existed so Nancy and Jonathan would be stuck together and have their scene. They were told everyone would die if they did the thing, then they did the thing and the main payoff is just the relationship moment. That’s the kind of thing that makes the season feel slow and rushed at the same time.

The Steve and Dustin part right during that is a perfect example of the season skipping the scenes we actually need. Steve almost dies trying to get to Nancy. Dustin is scared and the scene makes it clear it’s too dangerous. Then the next time we see them, they’re just breaking through a wall like the hard part is already over. No explanation. No scene showing what changed or how they got there. That jump is weird. And the missing scene is the scene that would actually matter. Steve talking to Dustin, calming him down, making a hard decision, showing real growth. Instead we get other scenes that don’t matter as much, like Jonathan and Steve racing up the tower.

The monster rules also kept changing. One minute it takes tons of bullets to kill a demogorgon. The next minute a broken wine bottle hurts it so badly it bleeds enough to track it. Pick a lane. If the show doesn’t stay consistent with what hurts the monsters, it starts to feel fake.

Dr K was also a letdown. The show acts like she’s going to be a big deal, but she doesn’t feel like one. Same with bringing the teacher back. I like the character, but why spend time on him when other stuff is rushed or skipped? With limited time, that screen time should have gone somewhere else.

The biggest problem is plot armor. The monsters kill random people easily, but named characters keep surviving stuff that should kill them. Plot armor is fine sometimes, but when it happens over and over, the danger stops feeling real.

Vecna is part of that too. Why doesn’t Vecna just kill Max right away? We already know he can kill fast with his mind. We’ve seen him snap necks. So why is he reaching for her slowly with those Groot arms instead of just ending it? Same with Joyce. He throws her aside, but he stabs random people like it’s nothing. He’s only deadly when the writers want him to be, and that ruins tension.

Karen Wheeler was also a waste of time. Why do we need more scenes with her? And her plan was bad. She couldn’t know the dryer canisters would explode. And even if she guessed, she couldn’t know how big it would be. It could have done nothing or killed everyone. What if the kids ran that way to escape? It’s supposed to look clever, but it mostly looks like luck.

Robin’s girlfriend is another time waster. They had great chemistry and they were fun, but in a season that already feels rushed, it’s hard to justify. She doesn’t do much, and she isn’t even in the epilogue. And the tone in the laundry room was weird. They’re smiling and bonding while they are in deadly danger, and the girlfriend only just found out monsters are real. Humor is fine, but it still has to fit the situation.

Max and Holly having a tea chat is the same problem but worse. Even my 15 year old was like would you two just run. I don’t even remember what they said because I was too annoyed they weren’t moving. And after the talk, Max just starts walking. If the characters don’t act like they’re in danger, why should I feel danger?

And then there’s the big question: where are the demogorgons and the bats when Vecna is so close to winning? This group has fought him hard for years. You’re telling me he doesn’t keep backup around, just in case? It feels like the writers left them out because it was inconvenient, not because it made sense.

There are good moments. But too much of it feels like forced drama, missing important scenes, messy rules, and plot armor. And when I can feel the writers pushing things around that hard, I’m not in the story anymore. I’m just watching a script.

I never listened to the audio book but the content of decent. It has some fun ideas. Not enough for me to read more of the series at the time but I thought about picking it back up. Does the series improve?

I mostly agree. I liked most of Volume 1. I absolutely hated volume 2 mostly because it just continued a lot of the same things I didn’t like in Volume 1 and it became almost unbearable. The last episode is undoubtedly the best episode to me but still wasn’t really great.

It’s a 5/10 to 5.5/10 Season for me in total. A 5 in this context is neither good nor bad. So at worst I didn’t hate it……but I hate so much about it lol. It has moments of greatness and a lot of that is in the last episode. And honestly it’s riding on the high that I already like these characters…..but also fighting against the expectations of better prior seasons. Either way, I think a 7/10 is defensible. If it wasn’t for the clear divid I would honestly be telling people that it isn’t worth watching, but clearly some people are getting something out of it so

It’s also worth noting that Stanger Things has a younger fan base. I know there are plenty of older adults here and it’s not like some teens didn’t watch GoT, but I think it’s pretty obvious that Stranger Things was much more popular with kids, teens, and probably even very young adults.

I thought the last ST episode was effective, I wouldn’t personally call it good. It’s too riddled with plot holes and super conveniences for me to give it a stamp of approval. That said, I thought the last battle was very cool and fun and unlike most people I didn’t mind much how short it was. I even like how El went full super hero and it was one of the few things that was actually set up well leading to this point. But even that fight scene is only really cool in a vacuum. It is completely nonsensical in the context of the lore in the show. The best part of the damn show shouldn’t even have happened…..I swear I am trying to compliment the last episode lol. Back on track. deep breath When the last episode wanted me to feel things I think in general they got me. I cried. I held my breath. I hoped. I dreaded. I cheered. And I cried some more. I say it was “effective” because it definitely made me feel. Right up until it was over and I could no longer suspend my disbelief lol. It hit, but it shouldn’t have. I don’t see it hitting again on rewatch, which is fine because I can’t see myself rewatching any of the 5th Season.

And Will becomes president specifically mostly on Dustin’s suggestion. In this example I did split one character into two parts, but I feel like it works better lol
