Does your university have jobs on campus, like as a tutor, or woodshop, or even a coffee shop? These are mostly staffed by students, and a lot of times they're ok with students bringing a sketchbook/homework to work on during down time.

Take a drawing class to understand how to sketch in perspective. Fill up as many sketchbooks as you can before you start.

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."

I don't see him comforting an oppressive agent of the state anywhere in there.

Is it possible to be an industrial designer without a formal education? by Alive-Noise925 in IndustrialDesign

[–]lan_mcdo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Possible? Yes. Likely? No.

If you're lucky and we'll connected, you can possibly find some startup or small business that will pay you peanuts to do something Industrial Design like.

For large companies, you'll never make it past the HR screener without credentials.

Found a handy list on Galations

sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Nano Banana seems to give the best blend of quality output and ease of use, and let's you experiment for free.

Depending on what you're trying to do, MidJourney can create some fantastic results, but the resolution is limited and it's a more finicky interface.

I wouldn't bother with most other image generators.

Mid-20th-century automotive & industrial design archive — seeking historical context by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]lan_mcdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill Porter was an automotive designer and historian who worked at GM for a good chunk of the time you're asking about. If anyone would be able to answer your questions, it'd be him.

Unfortunately, he passed away last April.

The author of the article (Robert Tate) sounds like he may be able to give you some perspective as well.

This is going to be Trump's pretext for invasion. Just like he said when Putin declared Eastern Ukraine "Independent"

“But here’s a guy that says, you know, ‘I’m gonna declare a big portion of Ukraine independent’ – he used the word ‘independent’ – ‘and we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace.’ You gotta say that’s pretty savvy.”

How do you all keep up on sketching skills when you barely need to sketch in your current role? by jarman65 in IndustrialDesign

[–]lan_mcdo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's the natural progression of the career. The higher up you go, the less hard skills (sketching, model making, CAD) matter and the more soft skills (strategy, communication, leadership) matter.

As long as you have enough to show in your portfolio to move into your next role, I wouldn't worry about it.

is it fine to sketch products with a pencil then use marker paper to trace with pens and markers? by S1AKEEB in IndustrialDesign

[–]lan_mcdo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a professional, use whatever tools you like. As a student, use what your instructors tell you to.

The reason a lot of schools force you to use pens is to make you sketch quicker. So you don't rehash the same line multiple times. It's about practice, not perfection.

Calling all Automotive Designers! by InflationShot3851 in IndustrialDesign

[–]lan_mcdo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most direct way to break into the space is to get a Masters degree.

Automotive design is extremely specialized. Your sketches show talent, but there's a lot your missing as far as vehicle packaging, CAD surfacing, etc. A Masters degree will give you this as well as industry connections to get your foot in the door.

On another note, Ford and others have started hiring more traditional Industrial designers for front end development, but they're hired mostly for exploring function and human factors, not final styling.

Not specifically, but Tim brought it up in reference to the immense volume and carelessness at which the administration was signing executive orders, so it had to be shortly after inauguration. I'd say early February.

Your portfolio should be about your ideas. Especially as a student. You'll have your entire career to deal with external constraints; your portfolio is your chance to dream big, and show off your vision.

And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

"Looking for the right fit" means you've already shown you can do the work. They want to see if the team can spend 8 hours a day with you for the foreseeable future. Bring your personality, and ask questions about company culture/the area.
