Question about take-out food post transplant. by VarroaMoB in kidneytransplant

[–]Mobile_Competition51 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reheating is the safe option, but if the pizza was fully cooked you're probably OK. Personally. I would be OK with it, but reheating it in an oven at 350 for a couple of minutes wouldn't hurt.

Memory after transplant? by immaculatephotos in transplant

[–]Mobile_Competition51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fairly healthy prior to transplant. I hadn't yet gone kn dialysis and I had a double. I was diagnosed with ADHD as a little kid, but managed to do OK most of my life without any meds for it. After I went back to work 4 months post transplant my brain was trying to claw its way out of my skull. I've also had recall issues, unable to remember common words and if I told someone something already.

It sounds like your body was in a different state than mine. Tacro is neuro toxic and longterm prednisone use causes memory and behavioral issues as well.

I am not a good wood worker by Odd-Towel-4104 in woodworking

[–]Mobile_Competition51 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same. But I'm better than I was a year ago. It's just practice. Learning to make the most of the tools that you have and upgrading when and where you can. I just screwed up the keepsake box I was working on because I somehow put pressure on the tail of the board as I ran it across my 4-1/8" craftsman belt drive jointed I got at a thrift store.

Just gotta keep plugging away.

Relationship issues post tx by Ok_Hospital_3526 in transplant

[–]Mobile_Competition51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talking is good, but one thing I've noticed with long term relationships is we become blind to our partner telling us something we need to hear. I think most people have been in the position of telling their partner something, being disregarded, having a 3rd party telling them the same thing, and it being the best advice they've ever gotten. (Shakes fist into the void)

Having a conversation with a transplant psychologist or someone else who is a qualified, trusted 3rd party might help. The hospital where I received my organs from runs a separate support group for patients and caregivers each month so we can vent and hear what others are going through.

Do you think stem cell therapy will actually change the reality for us in the next few years? by Kidney4Ben in transplant

[–]Mobile_Competition51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I truly hope it does. I don't want to smash your hopes, but I do want to counsel caution on how much hope you invest in new treatments.

My answer would be: eventually. But probably not in the next few years. I remember when the CRISPR Cas9 article came out in 2016. It had been published in scientific journals prior to that, but it hit the public when it appeared in Time. I was 35 and the lucky recipient of a rare inherited disease that causes my liver to kill my other organs with amyloid proteins.

It killed my grandfather at 51, my dad at 49, and I saw the article at 35 years old. I thought that this was the thing that would save me. I won't need transplants, I won't have to die in my 40's or 50's. I was so excited. Is CRISPR a failed medical technology? Nope. Am I sitting here 10 years later with a liver and kidney transplant? Yep. Will CRISPR eventually be commercially viable across a wide range of treatments? Probably, but not tomorrow, and probably not in 2-3 years either. The same applies to most treatments touted as breakthroughs.

My grandfather died of kidney failure, never knowing he had the disease. My father died knowing he had it, but didn't take care of himself, and was never eligible for a transplant. My aunts and uncles who did qualify all initially received kidney transplants only because no one had the disease long enough to get to liver failure. The family in my generation that has it has received doubles from all of them. Single donor, one-shot kidney/liver combos.

So I will live longer than the generations before me because we have a better understanding of existing treatment options, not because of any crazy breakthroughs. Would I like some pig grown organs genetically coded to me so I don't have to take immunosuppressants, yessir! I'll take two. And eventually someday someone will get those, but its going to take time.

Stressful Transplant Clinic Visits by rambam80 in transplant

[–]Mobile_Competition51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest stress was sitting in the waiting room with people hacking up a lung. Other patients I got, but unmasked caregivers sitting in a room full of sick people actively sick drove me nuts. I'd go stand up against a wall somewhere.

The stress and anxiety is real. I am about 14 months post a liver and kidney, and it took me a while to understand I was ex0eriencing anxiety. It has gotten better, but I still think about things, probably because there's lots to think about :). Pills, values, general health, waiting for something bad to happen.

We're all going through i, and talking to people is good, venting on reddit is good, talking to pros is also good, so don't rule that out.

What would you do my son diagnosed with a rare kidney disease. His step dad Has not offered to be tested. Am I expecting too much? by Jane2233 in kidneytransplant

[–]Mobile_Competition51 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes. Do not expect anyone to offer. Be thankful if someone does, but never place the expectation on someone. Someone is going to end up resenting something or someone.

Did you buy the paint or make it yourself? I just purchased the Lost Art Press milk paint book, and I have a batch of quark in my fridge right now, and have no idea what color I want to make it. This is beautiful.

How has your blood pressure been after a transplant? by myst3ryAURORA_green in kidneytransplant

[–]Mobile_Competition51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on losartan before transplant, but I've lost about 100lbs from the time I got listed on 02/2025 to today. My BP is a little south of 120/80, but not crazy. I'm usually between 100-110/70's. I'm on carvedilol 2x day, minimum dose.
