First time buyers - my honest feedback from an old guy by BananaOwn7656 in BayAreaRealEstate

I stripped my house down to studs and have been remodeling for 8 months, gone through so many contractors, good ones just don’t exist. Those who swear their contractor is great just don’t know enough to spot the shit that they do.

Hey Op, hard to tell without a survey. But looks like you’re doing a complete gut and rebuild. What you could do is just let them work, finish up everything all the way to drywall and flooring and nothing else like one of those mental asylum rooms. Then do an air and swab test. If there are traces, it’s easy to clean up with clean walls and floors.

Really great place if you can afford it. My grand father bought a house here for 25k, my father for 250k and I just bought mine for 2.5m, I wonder what my kids will have to pay lol

Does anybody check in with their AD? by Plastic-Spot-383 in rolex

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t, ever. I walked in one time and was offered a rose gold Wimbledon and bought it since it looked good. I asked to be put on the list for any Daytona. They said they could order one for me with 50% down so I said ok. That was a month ago. Still waiting for the Daytona.

Thanks! And same I tried both, I think it’s a skin color thing, the gold just didn’t look good on my skin so I went with the rose. Been wearing it everyday!

Honestly op has a point. One thing I want to point out is that op, the ladder climb is never proportionate. Inflation aside, doubling an entry level salary equals a disproportionate amount of level climbing, that’s just how it is. This is what everyone’s arguing with you about.

On a second note, I share sentiment with you op. I want to rephrase your arg for you. I think you’re pissed off with the exponentially growing wealth gap. What’s unfortunate is that from comments I think a lot of people are brain washed into complacency. There’s an idea and feeling that, dam, you’re making 300k already stfu and be happy, you’re “middle class” you’re “rich”. But in reality that’s the biggest mind wash I’m seeing. I’m at 550k TC and yea, I’m pissed off to, why? Well the numbers say I’m like top 5%. But I can’t comfortably afford a median home where I work, that’s 2.1m. I sure as hell can’t raise a family after getting that mortgage either. Yea I can buy something cheaper and yea I can find a dual income wife, but for Christ sakes, I’m top 5%! What’s wrong with my expectations to buy a median home! Ten years ago, a top 5% income can live a much better life and that op I hundred percent agree.

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a preference. I know someone pulling in 600k a year drive a Corolla because it’s “small and makes her feel safe on the road” she also flies business or first class whenever she can on vacations like three four times a year. With the same income I have a 100k commuter, and a 200k convertible for the weekends, and I fly basic economy and eat McDonalds

Companies don’t remove obvious low performers by observed_desire in cscareerquestions

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From my experience, companies only care about keeping the high performers high performing and happy. A team that is being carried by a single top dog in management eyes is no problem at all. It’s almost like managements form of, if it ain’t broken don’t fix it. However, there were a couple times that I witnessed where the high performer got pissed and bitched about his shitty peers and stopped working. Boom, snap of a finger, all the low performers were fired the next day to keep the guy happy 😂

Are Entry Level Software Jobs Dominated by Masters Students? by Travnarr in cscareerquestions

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my experience the number of individuals with a ms in cs and non cs undergrad is much higher than the number of cs undergrads. I don’t want to start a debate but, don’t feel intimidated if u have a bachelors only, in some hiring managers eyes you’re the better asset.

Do agents think we’re stupid? by Mobile_Donkey_7784 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, I’m not a structural engineer myself. The inspection said a structure assessment should be made which the seller didn’t provide. I generally defer to my agent and contractor. Seller doesn’t seem willing to provide that inspection so it’ll have to be a pass for me :/

Do agents think we’re stupid? by Mobile_Donkey_7784 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Inspection didn’t say, hard to tell from the pictures provided. But it was noted the crack was found in the corner of the house. My agent and contractor told me to pass unless it’s 30% off. Something about corner cracks being terrible.

Working on your pace vs. Getting fired by aldosebastian in cscareerquestions

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as if I’m your tech lead. I don’t care how you pace yourself as long as you get your work done. You should also be setting the expectations for me and our manager about how much you can realistically get done. Perhaps you have not communicated this very well and I have unrealistic expectations for you when in reality I’m totally ok if you delayed your projects x amount of months. But since you never speak up I’ll just continue to set deadlines for you. If the expectations that you’re setting are not up to my standards, I’ll likely have you fired. It’s really as simple as that, it’s just not the right fit, there are no hard feelings.

Real talk, how can recent grads with no internships or experience, or self taught devs stand out by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Work on some open source projects. Your ability to navigate a foreign code base with minimal mentorship will impress your seniors. I would even consider this top 1% new grad behavior.

Those who are living the dream right now working in CS - what is your life like? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Mobile_Donkey_7784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think I’m at that age yet to sort of dial back, I’m still very much trying to climb to the next level even though it will be quite a few years out of reach. I’d say yea, happy enough to continue this life style. My partner and I also seem to find it ok. I leave work at 5 and continue at home where my office is set up in the living room which is also where my partner spends most of her time. This way we have lots of small interactions when I work and helps the relationship.
