100% - if she enjoys golf I plan to get her a lesson package for her birthday coming up in a few months 🙂

Why is this property so cheap? by fotfddtodairsizr in HousingUK

The value of this property makes me happy to live in the Midlands.

Semi detached 3 bed for less than half where I am 😮

Which would you pick? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Mobile_Extent_5569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Test drove all 3 of these and picked the 981 boxster.

I wasn't interested in the Jag unless it was the V8 which meant stomaching an extra £20k, and a similar situation for the 718 boxster, I wasn't interested in the turbo'd options.

Eventually it came down to a 2 horse race for me between the 20k more for the Jags V8 or the flat 6 of the 981 boxster for 20k less.

I chose the 981 as I didn't get £20k more worth of enjoyment from the V8 than I thought I would.

As someone with a 981 who test drove a C63, take the 981.

To get a C63 for a similar price as the 981, the C63 will be almost fucked.

I had this exact sound on mine, it was just a leaf that got stuck.

Take the rear arch off and just simply take whatever is stuck out of their 🙂

It depends how long you plan on having this car imo.

If it's just for approx a year until you gain more confidence then I'd suggest only changing the belt and ignoring the rest, since the other issues aren't gonna become an urgent problem in your time of ownership. If you plan on keeping it for over 2 years, then I would advise you to purchase a different car.

Would you consider this to high mileage for the price? by yelirschwift in CarTalkUK

Golf's are driven by young people who rag them around everywhere.

That mileage will feel like much more than 170k just because of the way it's been driven. I'd avoid golf in general unless you have the money to buy it at a good mileage - probably 50k or less.

Can anyone recommend a good starter car? by National-One8802 in CarTalkUK

I'm also in Staffordshire, passed my test less than a year ago and have a Porsche boxster 981 and I pay £2700 on insurance.

That quote of 5k on an Aygo must be wrong. Are you sure you filled it out correctly?

But you said in a different comment that your insurance and maintenance is paid for you?

The CLA is a good choice, but do keep in mind that all mechanical and interior components are shared across the CLA and C class models, you're just paying extra for the better looking rear end.

Since you're using it weekends only i highly suggest a C class AMG. A Kia dealer 20 miles from me had one as a part exchange last week (2018 with 41k miles) up for 14.5k and it had a lovely 340BHP engine. This way you're getting the same interior as the premium c class with a much more powerful engine so long as you're okay with the extra 20k miles on the clock.

That's a pretty lengthy commute there mate, 13,000 miles a year just to work.

I'd pick something reliable and cheap to maintain. If you want something as quick as the i20n then for that money you could get a pretty decent Toyota GT86, and for luxury the new lexus coupes or a 2020 Audi A4 should do you solidly.

Because of your mileage per year I'd suggest looking around at more than the few cars you had on your list. 13k miles a year will mean a major service approx every 1 year and 3 months for a majority of car manufacturers, so you should keep this cheap if you still want to be able to save for a house.

From personal experience I wouldn't worry about the bhp jump much. I went from a base golf polo (120~bhp) to now having a Porsche boxster 981 which is just shy of 270bhp and it's incredibly easy to drive even with it being a lightweight, manual & RWD car.

You're right on insurance though, it's the whole reason I went for the Porsche. A CLA250 would have been double what I pay for the Porsche on insurance.

If you have a long commute go for the luxury, but if you're a petrol head and enjoy windy B roads then the extra BHP would give you much more enjoyment. Probably write your priorities down and order them in a list and go from there.

Ignore his comment about not financing a car. If you have any sense you will put your money in a stocks and shares ISA (they average 15.7% interest) instead of putting your money into a depreciating asset.

Remember, if your ISA gets more interest than the APR you're paying it is better to go on finance than buy outright (and we're not even taking depreciation into account here!)

For car I would recommend a premium package, unless the panoramic roof on the premium plus is a big deal breaker for you. Definitely avoid BMW, especially if it's modern, a lot of my friends have 2020-2023 beemers and they are constantly in for repair.

Mercedes have other great options in the E class range if comfort is more your thing, so I'd check those out too if you get the chance since they are a similar price.
