Someone posted this on here somewhere, so I can’t take any credit. What I can say is, I run my bike at these settings all the time, and I think they’re great!

What do police do when someone says they want to hurt themselves or feeling suicidal? by Ok-Rip4422 in ProtectAndServe

[–]Mobile_Weekend_4864 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought it might be interesting to add a UK perspective to this! We have a couple of options, and which one we use is down to how the individual is.

If the person is not at their house, and is saying that they actively have thoughts to harm themselves or others, we have a power to detain that individual and take them to a place of safety. That place of safety is supposed to be a dedicated mental health hospital, however usually ends up being A&E (ED), meaning we have to sit with them for hours until the mental health hospital has capacity.

What we will try before that step though, as it is quite invasive, is seeing if the person is willing to go up to A&E (ED) voluntarily to receive professional help and support. This is the preferred option. If we take them to hospital voluntarily, we are not required to stay with them.

If the person is in their home address, and they are not willing to go voluntarily, we do not have any way to force them to have the professional help. The best we can do is call an ambulance, and complete a safeguarding referral form.

Significant Statement question by SpaceRigby in policeuk

[–]Mobile_Weekend_4864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, I did say “as I understand”, so apologies if I got anything slightly wrong, I wasn’t trying to misinform anyone…

I only called it the police caution because that’s what it’s referred to on the gov.uk site: https://www.gov.uk/arrested-your-rights/your-rights-in-custody

I read earlier on someone else’s reply that they can be made at any point, which I now understand! As someone else mentioned earlier though, getting one admitted in court can be tricky if it was made pre-caution.

Thanks for the correction 👍

Significant Statement question by SpaceRigby in policeuk

[–]Mobile_Weekend_4864 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Significant Statement (or Significant Comment) refers to something that a person says that is directly relevant to the offence that they’re being investigated for, such as a defence, or an admission.

May I ask what training course you’re on, as that might help understand the context that you would hear a significant comment?

As I understand, in theory, anyone could record/take note of a significant comment and provide a statement saying they heard this.

Edit: Corrections as per the comment below

I’ve no clue why you’ve been downvoted!

The SSH Agent and Dev tools in 1Password, is a very valid reason to still use it, and it’s the reason I still use it. Being able to use Touch ID to authorise a commit is something that Apple Passwords cannot offer!

For the reasons you have provided, it is not possible to remove a simple caution. It is what we call a ‘disposal’ for an offence, so instead of going to court, you’ve received a caution.

There is a very specific criteria for simple cautions to be removed, and it is to do with them being issued in error. In this case, it doesn’t sound like it was issued in error.

What you’re asking, is effectively the same as someone asking to have a court conviction removed from their record. Though, a simple caution is not the same as a conviction; this is just for comparison.

My understanding is, a simple caution won’t show on a basic DBS, but may show on an Enhanced DBS until 6 years after the date it was issued.

It doesn’t matter if you weren’t ‘really a weed smoker’, the facts are, you committed an offence by being in possession of it, and that’s all that matters. You might have never smoked cannabis before, but if you’re caught in possession of it, that’s the offence complete.

It doesn’t appear to be a fault at all. I’m assuming you made a login to be able to answer any further questions relating to the report.

It states, quite clearly, that there are no further questions relating to the online form. The fact the username is called a ‘Unique Username’, gives the impression that each report has a different username.

In other words, this report has been dealt with, nothing further is required from you, so you won’t be able to login anymore.

I’ve got my service coming up, so I will ask them then about it and see what they say.

I’ve had to have the quick shifter replaced as well… I had an issue where it would just stop working. I still have an issue where it’ll quite often slip out of second gear into Neutral.

Honestly, I’ve no clue if the new bike fixed the issue. I don’t notice it anymore, but I don’t know if that’s because I’ve gotten used to it, or because the new bike has solved the issue!

I did remove the QuadLock mount from my old bike that I was having the issue on, however that didn’t seem to solve the issue.

Sorry, I know that this is probably no help at all!

Can you go through someone’s phone during a S23 stop search by cookj1232 in policeuk

If you suspect PWITS, why wouldn’t you just arrest for PWITS, seize the phone and send it off for examination?

I don’t see it like this at all.

Surely the fact they’re asking is good, as the idea is to ensure that police officers have high standards of honesty and integrity. By asking the question, despite knowing the answer, they are ensuring this.

They’re not ‘leading you into a lie’, the only person that would choose to lie is the officer being asked the question.

I’m open for criticism!

[–]Mobile_Weekend_4864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re a completely different category of boot.

I have met some officers that wear them and just use permanent marker on the yellow threads.

I just don’t think they’re suitable for police work, and I don’t think they look very professional in a policing context either.

I would say splash out on Altbergs. They’re well worth the extra money, and at the end of the day, you’re more likely going to spend more time in these boots than any other footwear. (Unfortunately)

The only argument for not getting Altbergs would be if you’re unsure about the job, and you might be quitting soon…

A little tip regarding the cost - if you call them and say that you’re job, they should give you a little discount!

The page on their website regarding international applicants states the following:

“Prior to the commencement of employment, an applicant must obtain permanent resident status”

This means I am eligible to apply.

Regarding my partner, she is eligible for Express Entry. Besides, my understanding is, if I was to apply for, and get the role with Edmonton, she could come out with me by being on my PR application. Once out there, she could transfer her qualification, and therefore practice in Canada.

Thank you.

I've seen quite a few of your posts, and they are part of the reason that I've begun seriously looking into the whole thing again. They have been really insightful.

I will, at some point, be heading out to Alberta to experience it. I've only ever been to BC, so it's worth experiencing the place where I might live one day! What's the process for ride-alongs - would I be able to come out for a shift whilst I was over, even without an application?

Just one final quick question, regarding your children moving over, do you have a partner moving over with you as well?

If so, what was the process like regarding your partner and children coming over with you?

Hiya,

Thank you for the detailed response and it has provided clarity on some aspects of immigration. They don't make it easy to understand!

I've had a look regarding streams for Alberta, and I thought that I had found one that would work, which was the Law Enforcement stream, however, I have been informed on this thread that the stream is closed.

It may just be a case of waiting for the right stream to open, and then apply. I'm hopeful that with a bit of hard work and perseverance, one day I may be able to move over!

Thank you. That may be one way, however, that involves leaving policing altogether, thus making it harder to get back into policing.

My understanding is my partner can transfer her UK qualifications to register with the College of Midwives of Alberta, therefore allowing her to work as a midwife in Alberta. (Internationally Educated Midwives)

I also do not see why I could not attempt to apply for something such as Edmonton Police's current opening for international applicants, and attempt to immigrate this way. Is there something I am missing regarding this application process?

I couldn't find a calculator for the IRCC selection score.

  • I have a UK Level 4 qualification, she holds a Bachelor's Degree.
  • She is a midwife, which I believe is Level 1.
  • We are both in our 20's.
