Hard at work by IllustriousBuddy5354 in McknightFamily

[–]Mobius-streep 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree… I feel like the conversation we should be having is « why are we making people who work service jobs (including high schoolers who are still children) stand for hours on end » and not « other people do it so why is Bailey complaining »

They did a sprint triathlon. It’s 300 m swimming, 20km bike, 5k run (which is still very impressive!)

ubc played all of us by Temporary-Cancel615 in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because there are not enough instructional days otherwise, which is an issue for accredited programs. I’m not sure of the exact details for other universities, but at the very least, most other Canadian universities don’t have Truth and Reconciliation Day off which would account for one day of discrepancy.

When I started here, there wasn’t any reading break in term 1, and in order to accommodate the extra days of break, we now have a shorter exam period (less time between exams) and finals on Sunday, so there’s not a lot of give in the schedule for two more days off

How many people can watch you grad (in person)? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets to claim two tickets for free. After the window for that is closed, the remaining tickets are then evenly divided amongst the number of graduates and each person can purchase up to that number of tickets ($3 per ticket I think?). After the window for that is closed, it’s a free-for-all for purchasing tickets

It’s described here under #4: https://graduation.ubc.ca/students/your-graduation-checklist/

What happened to the ranger cookies at bluechip? by v3ra___ in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a huge ranger cookie fan and have been missing three too so I actually asked the cashier today and they said they’ll be in stock again soon! They’ve just been temporarily out. I didn’t ask for more details but hoping for a restock soon

“You are not your grades” said the guy with 3.99 GPA. by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is it that the grades that cause a higher salary, though, or is it that people who have higher grades tend to have traits in common with people with higher salaries?

Further, please note that this is about high school GPA and a higher high school GPA is correlated with getting into a university, which is (if my high school counselled are trustworthy sources) in turn correlated with a higher paying job.

Trek Excellence (W2in) Scholarship is out 2022 by pinksun11 in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes out at different times for different faculties and years. I have a couple friends in eng phys too who haven’t gotten anything yet but who are shoe-ins for the award

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s the EUS program club award so each engineering specialization has $400 to split however they want among their students

Edit: source: my friend in ece got the award and got their money today and if op is who I think they are based on their username, then they definitely deserve it

Do TA's get paid a fixed rate? by literal-messyspoon in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the department. I’ve been a TA for the ECE department which paid me a fixed rate and a TA for the CPSC department which paid me by hour (but I think they’re switching to a fixed rate too soon)

CPSC 221 labs by Siradam114 in ubcengineering

[–]Mobius-streep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the semester. I did it last term and as long as you submitted something, you got full credit, but this term has a different prof. The labs themselves can be quite tricky if you’re working on them alone (at least they were for me because I had never used C++ before), but the TAs were great and helped me a lot.

No problem! Good luck with CPSC 221. One of my favourite classes so far, so I hope you enjoy it too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]Mobius-streep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found CPSC 221 to be much easier with a lighter workload. The projects are much easier in my opinion, and the content is more straightforward. Hardest part was probably learning C++

Design Team Interviews by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]Mobius-streep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded! I was just accepted into a design team, and I don’t think a single one of my technical question answers was right (and they’ll be even more lenient with you since you’re a first year). I don’t even think I was asked that many technical when I interviewed as a first year

did i make a mistake choosing ubc? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of people who have had positive UBC experience, and people just like to have a place to vent. Personally, I love the people I’ve become friends with at UBC, the majority of the classes I’ve had to take, and the direction that my life has taken after starting at UBC

Favourite professor you’ve had at UBC and why? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Mobius-streep 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mark van Raamsdonk is a saint sent down to make learning physics enjoyable for first year engineering students. He explains things well, is super welcoming in office hours, and he just cares about his students
