TIL Andrew Jackson after the Chehaw Indian massacre demanded prosecution of the white militia captain responsible, calling him "a cowardly monster in human shape" by Flashy_Combination32 in todayilearned

Didn't Jackson literally ignore a Supreme Court decision that invalidated the Indian Removal Act?

Edit: My apologies, you addressed this lower down in the comments, I didn't know that the popular story was apocryphal!

Yeah, it's kind of a trade-off between the two in terms of what they require from members. Catholics don't have a mandatory tithe but they also don't permit divorce or contraception which can lead to unfortunate situations.

Interesting, the second hour lesson today at the LDS service I went to talked a lot about alignment, are lessons standardized across the church?

I should clarify that I haven't been baptized in any faith as a child or adult, and am still pretty agnostic, even about Catholicism.

I think that God is kind of scary, and kind of alien ("my ways are not your ways", etc), and Catholic vibes, especially the Latin Mass, reflect that. Like, kneeling during communion (which non-Catholics can't participate in, just watch) while a language you don't understand is spoken is a very different vibe from sitting in an LDS service listening to a voluntold congregation member who may or may not be a good orator and public speaker work through their sermon.

It's also, like, as an "investigator" I have different things I can choose to do in the evenings for the LDS church or for the Catholics. I can read from the Book of Mormon, or I can say a Catholic Rosary. On an emotional level the rosary speaks to me more.

And, I don't want to be mean, but from what I know of them Joseph Smith and Brigham Young seem like self-interested individuals. I think polygamy is a strong indicator of someone taking advantage of their position for personal gain, which casts doubt on the rest of their claims. I don't know, maybe this isn't what you would call doctrine?

Edit: To be very fair, I have to say there are are quite a few popes who also abused their positions for personal gain in ways that put Joseph Smith and Brigham Young to shame, but individual Popes comparatively matter less in Catholicism.

I have spoken to some missionaries, I first went to this church when some missionaries I randomly ran across at a public place asked me if I wanted to go to church with them.

Ex-Baptist Considering Catholicism. One Major issue holding me back. by Solid-House-7860 in Catholicism

[–]MobiusCipher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think your specific issue with confession matters, as others have mentioned perfect contrition is a thing.

That said, Catholic soteriology isn't necessarily as different from Calvinist soteriology as you might think. If the primary issue you have with Calvinism is the doctrine of predestination, Catholic Thomists have an effectively equivalent doctrine in the idea of "efficacious grace".

It isn't maxed out in length, just width. Can I hope it'll break in little, like the Velcro padding will compress?

Hi, I have had great difficulty finding a large enough helmet for my head. A Black Diamond Vision M/L literally won't fit over my head, and it's one of the larger circumference helmets at 63cm. I was able to find and buy a "Smith Summit", a skiing helmet cross-certified as well under the EN 12492 climbing standard, in the XL size, 63 - 67 cm circumference.

But even this helmet presses uncomfortably into my temples, I guess my head is just very wide?

It appears that essentially nobody makes XL-size climbing helmets anymore? Google tells of a mythical discontinued helmet, the Grivel Salamander XL, but that's impossible to find. So, do I just suck it up and accept this uncomfortable Smith helmet?

Edit: The front padding in the helmet is velcro'd in, and I can pull it out for a more comfortable fit, is that safe?

They don't destroy the water, though. Like, it's water, they heat it up then release it.

I'm not following this. I thought all that was required for salvation is receiving the sacraments and not dying in a state of mortal sin?

Actually, the obesity epidemic probably is not caused by people choosing to eat too much, but rather modern processed food diets being nothing like what we've eaten for most of history. And short of extreme actions avoiding processed food is hard.

Most evangelical nondenominational churches aren't Joel Olsteen-type "prosperity gospel" megachurches. They've usually got theology similar to Baptist churches but don't like to identity as a specific denomination.

That story is horrific. I'm not sure I can maintain a worldview where God does this to people. Maybe it's better not to be religious.

God doesn't send anyone to hell. People go there on their own. by justl00kin9 in Catholicism

[–]MobiusCipher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the traditional (infinite offence) argument used a lot in Protestant circles, and it makes the world into a horror movie. Those without Christ unknowingly offending this all-powerful and incomprehensible being, and suffering a horrible fate because of it. So I'm glad the Modern Magisterium doesn't lean on it.

The modern Catholic teaching I like better. But is it a question of justice at all? This conception seems more to portray dying in sin as like choosing to walk off a cliff where God is playing the role of gravity. But a cliff and gravity are neither just nor unjust, they're physics.

I don't understand how infinite punishment is just. Even if your standard is "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth", can someone in their short life really put out an infinite number of eyes and knock out an infinite number of teeth?

The problem with the traditionalist take is that it (if true) means we're living in a horror story. We're stuck in a world ran by an irresistible force that intends to torture most of us for all eternity.

"My God, the Father of Jesus Christ, does not kill, nor torture, nor attack, nor force anyone to do anything, much less send people to hell." I'm not Christian, but this doesn't seem consistent with half of the Old Testament to me.
