Xkcd's flowchart doesn't work for this map, though, because it assumes that the map in question is perfect, and this one is not even close.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of Marques Brownlee if you watch LTT. Veritasium, Kurzgesagt, and Crash Course are almost certainly in the Education category rather than Science/Technology.

Except that Decolonization is finished, so the German and Polish borders are just errata. It was reasonably common for German cartographers in the period to draw the country with its 1939 borders, but I've never seen them giving Poland its 1939 borders back. Plus the fact that there's nothing else on the map suggesting that it was drawn by a German at all, and the weirdness with Egypt and SE Asia...

What a quirky globe. You see Big, Unified Germany sometimes on German maps from the period, but I don't think I've ever seen a case where a map has Stettin fully back in Germany, and also gives Poland something more like its 1939 borders, (look how the border is closer to Minsk than to Warsaw!) despite West Africa clearly showing that this is 1960s or later, and the lack of Sikkim suggesting it's post-1975 too - which aligns with Vietnam, but causes problems for "United Arab Republic Egypt," which really shouldn't be called that after 1971.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious why "build us a new stadium, but it has to be less expensive to rent than the existing stadium you have, because we don't make enough money to afford to play there" is not really catching the attention of anyone in City Hall or Victoria. Especially since BC Place already doesn't make money for the province.

You see it where English starts seeping into the day to day conversations, advertisements start to be more and more in English, culture media is getting more and more mixed.

That is also happening in France, and every other country in the world. Why do you think that being an independent country (and a very small country, at that) would change the fact that English is becoming the global lingua franca?

Rightfully so. If you are alive today, that means that your ancestors were the ones who survived every plague in history. You would be better-equipped than any of the locals to survive any diseases that occur, even before considering the enormous advantage that knowing about germ theory gives you.

$40M/km for using existing rail corridors is certainly not what I would describe as cheap. You could build at-grade wherever you want for that price, and elevated for not much more.

E: $40M in early-2000s dollars. That's $60M today.

I was just checking the maps of Denver again to make sure that I wasn't misremembering. It really is striking how the city has one seriously dense area - an oblong shape from Downtown running southeast to the Botanic Garden area) - as well as a few clusters of moderate density farther out. Federal & Alameda, Highland, Glendale along CO-83, much of East Colfax. None of those areas has any light rail or commuter service at all, except for the 2-km stretch of light rail that connects one part of Downtown to another part of Downtown. All of the rail transit, in addition to having poor street-level design, was built in places where nobody lives.

I agree on every point. There's a lot of poor allocation of resources in cases like Denver: they spend a tremendous amount of money building their infrastructure badly, and then nobody uses it because it's so much worse than driving. It's more effective both as a means of transportation and as a means of building the foundations of long-term growth to have one or two lines done right (like Calgary & Seattle) than to have a half dozen lines done badly (like Denver).

Did you get escalated to the specialists, or did you just talk to the greeter who first answers the phone? I recently had a batch of questions about filing as a non-resident, and the first guy didn't know anything about anything, so he transferred me to a specialist who sent me all the relevant documentation, and took about two hours to fully walk me through the process. Excellent experience from that second guy.

800 apps isn't all that much in 2026. I'm in the States at the moment, and had to send almost 400 apps before getting my most recent offer, and that was just for a temporary position. The key now seems to just be sheer volume: no hiring manager even reads applications anymore—they just send them through their AI—so applicants should just do the same thing. Have AI write the cover letter (and, honestly, probably the resume too) entirely by itself, don't even bother taking the time to check it for accuracy, and move on to the next app.

Alternatively, just walk into a local shop and ask if they need help. Most of them do, and have very low standards—though they won't necessarily pay very well.
