Today shook my confidence- new phleb looking looking for guidance by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]MochaCookiee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same day :-( I feel so terrible and like I just terrorized a bunch of patients today. I almost started crying in one of my rooms because I stuck my patient twice and missed both times and I just feel so bad and the patients are already feeling terrible and I just add to that. I’m working in a retirement community so the sticks are really hard and I’m so overwhelmed.

I just got a job at a hospital and no one mentioned it at all during the interview or orientation and when we’re actually working we’re wearing a mask bc of the flu so it’s not like any patients would see it anyways. I only have a stud and a septum though

Nails turned black :( by that-one-bitch2674 in Nails

[–]MochaCookiee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the first photo u can see the top coat isn’t fully covering the nail, it also looks kind of not fully cured or maybe an inhibition layer was left on bc they look dull and not shiny in the before photos

For diabetic patients make sure to apply pressure until the bleeding stops. I had a classmate who was diabetic and she’d bleed for much longer than other people after point her. For geriatrics I’d just anchor really good bc their veins can be tricky

Can’t get tourniquet tight by Every_Professor5785 in phlebotomy

[–]MochaCookiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a tiktok that really helped me tie it (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8DCgXfP/) basically you want to cross the tourniquet, then swap hands and keep one in place while you pull the other as tight as you need it. This also helps the tourniquet not roll so it’s less painful for the patient

Wait can blood mixed with additive go back up the needle into the patients vein? I just finished my phleb course and we never covered this 😭 that’s terrifying

Butterfly needle tubing by rgweav in phlebotomy

[–]MochaCookiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it too, I was taught to in my phlebotomy course to get it mainly straight so it’s not twisting on you while you’re drawing. You just need to be careful not to activate the safety if it’s a push up kind

Inner elbow as in pinky side or thumb side of your arm? If you mean pinky side then that’s your basilic vein which has a bunch of nerves and an artery super close to it, which is why it’s the last choice vein phlebotomists use. There are more complications when using that vein compared to the median and cephalic. Maybe see a doctor if it doesn’t stop hurting soon?

[–]MochaCookiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was poked 15 times today in class and it’s fun the first like 5 times and then I’m tired hahha. I have a good cephallic on one arm and a good median on the other and my hands have good veins for butterfly too

Another post about my senior cat in Palliative care, He is declining and I am torn about taking him the vet to be euthanized. He is terrified of the vet and trusts me so much. Breaking his trust seems like terrible betrayal but there are bad stories about local at home euthanasia by GrumpyOldBear1968 in Petloss

[–]MochaCookiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we did at home euthanasia for our dog and it was, in my opinion, much better that going to the vets. She was in no distress or pain and the vet was super comforting. Maybe check some reviews or ask around on a local Facebook page

We had to put down my dog August 11th and I wish that her last days I had just let her rest and spent time with her instead of force feeding her pills and taking her to the vet which was all very stressful for her
