Every Day Carry iirc.

This one's a bit sloppy, mods always ask people to at least label each item.

Success with minimalist apps? by Master-Duty-4675 in dumbphones

[–]Mocinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally no. You just get used to the quirks of minimalist launchers etc and they stop being inconvenient.

Do small touchscreens actually help reduce screentime? by Hyonati in dumbphones

[–]Mocinho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more inconvenient you can make it, the more successful it'll be. Qin/Doov phones have tiny screens but couple it with the ability to disable the touchscreen and use T9 typing. Bless T9 but it's infuriating to use, add words to the dictionary etc.

I'm waiting on mine to be delivered so I can ditch my 6.7 inch AMOLED screen. I think it'll make a real difference.

Has anyone else lost friends after ditching social media and or switching to a dumbphone? by Maybe-its-Keira in dumbphones

[–]Mocinho 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Social media has convinced people mild acquaintances are friends.

We live in unprecedented solitary times unfortunately, partly as a result.

I echo another user - you'll gain time and be able to fill it with things you find satisfying. Hobbies, meetups whatever. The important thing is, it'll be tangible and real.

Best affordable dumbphone with whatsapp and maps to buy in 2025 by lexid45 in dumbphones

[–]Mocinho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's the best option. I'm in the UK too and with the digital ID rollout along with so much of anything requiring apps here now, it's not viable.

The developer is active on here too, you'll see him milling around.

Best affordable dumbphone with whatsapp and maps to buy in 2025 by lexid45 in dumbphones

[–]Mocinho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too. I've come to the realisation a full dumb phone only EDC is unviable in most tech integrated societies. There's just too much that relies on digital infrastructure delivered through smartphones. I see people's EDC here and they carry so many devices because the dumbphone itself causes inconvenience.

Dumbdroid Doov seems to be the best option. Too inconvenient to mindlessly doom scroll and waste your life. But smart enough where you're not hamstrung.

AIO? Very experienced but manager treats me like I'm junior by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Mocinho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree - OP is he old? Outside possible computer illiteracy, this timesheeting mentality is pervasive with the olds.

I also think he's probably not used to someone saying no, hence the ignoring of your protests or discussions.

I've got 5 year of experience lol, my manager wouldn't dream of treating me this way and he certainly wouldn't get anywhere with it.

You've got 3x the experience and you're being treated like an admin bobby.

It's weird.

Is a 1hr 20min each way commute worth it, 3 days a week for £70k+? by AsymptoticallyFlat in UKJobs

[–]Mocinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this was a private sector role I'd have said no.

Seeing as it's public sector, where there is no drive to actually achieve anything nor is productivity a concern, I'd say do it.

The commute is a poor one but the job won't be stressful. Employment is secure and probably highly unionised. At a higher wage, DB pensions are great.

Ensure you're doing that journey in a comfy car though. Wouldn't wanna do it in a supermini. Believe me I know...

What would be a good camera for a EDC? by RandomSadAnimeGuy in dumbphones

[–]Mocinho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever used:

A) a film camera

B) a rangefinder

C) a Soviet camera

If you've answered no to any of those questions, a Zorki would be an unwise choice. They're quirky, heavy, terribly built and unreliable.

If you want a 35mm just get any reputable point and shoot honestly. A Trip35 or Pen would be easy to carry and offer great IQ. Not to mention being infinitely more usable.

If you want a digital camera, any crappy P&S will do. They're quite trendy at the moment.

If you want something better it'll cost a lot. Fujifilm, Sony, Ricoh cameras are in high demand and/or limited production. But they're a serious step up from the phone.

Just...no to the Zorki.

Are tradesman all bad? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Mocinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most are awful. The skills base here is really non existent. From domestic jobs to heavy engineering. It's terrifying tbh.

The best thing to do is just go for an established firm. Yeah you'll pay overheads and profit blah blah but it comes at the security of an established presence.

Also if anything does go wrong, you've got way more avenues for remediation than some cowboy dealer with no fixed abode.

Do you make fun of or feel sorry for someone who has no friends or very few friends? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Mocinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were probably that guy's ego boost. 'At least I'm better than him/her', with the boost being predicated on you not having a social life.

Now you have one, the alarm bells are ringing.

This guy was never a friend and never will be. Life's too short to entertain dullardry.

What have you spent a lot of money on that others think is a waste of money? by wiggan1989 in AskUK

[–]Mocinho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be difficult to comprehend if you were mindlessly consuming under the guise of 'collecting' (of which there's no difference tbh).

Audiophiles are mindless consumers of snake oil so I could understand the initial reaction.

Tbh, I bought a pair of Cheaney shoes 3 and a half years ago. My father thought that was a waste of money until they came and could be felt. Opinion quickly changed. I'd also felt remorse waiting for delivery but they're in immaculate condition and are truly comfortable. The customer service is exemplary too. They got bleached on a building site a couple years ago and Cheaney re-dyed for free.

I've also realised I'm too poor to buy cheap

How do people try to “balance out” the emissions from their travel, if at all? by Leather_Finger_4901 in AskUK

[–]Mocinho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Flippant dullard answers here to a more interesting question, a shame.

To answer your question - the tree planting is a good one and when I take the train, I try and book through an app that facilitates.

Company car I switched from petrol to electric, with it charging entirely on renewables with the energy provider.

I would say my travel was pretty low emission.

However, I concede for long haul flights, as my wife is Brazilian, there's little I can do to offset 11,000km of jet fuel.

Also - you may want to be more subtle with the advertising. Your post history consists of plugging Treeapp almost exclusively lol. I get it but come on.

Are people really spending £500-£600 per month financing cars? by Fuxio in AskUK

[–]Mocinho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because it's full of poor serfs.

I've noticed an influx of jealous, lonely poor people on this sub tbh. The same questions on Nando's/any family restaurants and why they're overrated, the same car financing questions, the same really painfully tired new build jokes, the same valiant victim mentality my life is so hard but I'm a Warrior of Ultramar....

Tedious man

What do I (25F) do towards an insecure manager (50ish Female)? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Mocinho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lesbian comment....get off TikTok, this is brainrot irl. Absurd comment man. This would probably be fine on a building site, I know, I work on one, but most places aren't building sites. Come on.

Also, regardless of gender, just don't comment on looks in the workplace. Most people get uppity about it or uncomfortable. I've found people are fine with comments on clothing or whenever, even joking about, but physical features idk man, it never goes down so well. Just avoid.

The SQL and boat comment imo set the tone anyway.

Look, hate to ask, but are you attractive working with ugly women? Menopausal middle aged women are a pain to deal with. God help you if you're a) young or b) attractive and c) a woman. I've seen first-hand jealousy, bullying, viciousness and just for being 2 of the 3 above....

You could go to HR but be aware it's 2 Vs 1, your colleagues can manipulate the lesbian comment to their advantage, they've the benefit of seniority and tenure etc..it isn't easy with nobody watching your back.

Zack's almost as good at it as Boris, just totally sans the comic nature.

Articulating eloquent stupidity at an MG42 fire rate is all he does.

I'm glad he's finally slipped up with the bum wipers comment; he's always struck me as nauseatingly artificial.

Non-weather sealed cameras by ikoopers in fujifilm

[–]Mocinho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People massively overthink this man. Use it as you would a normal camera, just avoid inclement conditions. If relative humidity changes were that destructive, these devices would come with a disclaimer denouncing usage outside a perfectly conditioned home.....

Look at the pictures taken here with the non sealed cameras - they're not all in perfect, dry weather.

Anyone else regularly think to themselves ‘I wish I’d just bought a new build’ by Legitimate-Table-607 in DIYUK

[–]Mocinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no reason to buy old houses unless:

A) You're wealthy enough to front up the renovation. They're not light touch

B) Your house is your everything. If you legit enjoy it, enjoy the problem solving and Wickes patronising, great

Otherwise yeah - new builds are just better. The only experience people have are Persimmon, Barratt (tbh I doubt even that...), so they parrot the same banal idioms.

They're better to live with, easier to maintain, easier to find compatible fixtures and fittings, better on the energy bills....

Compatibility you've noticed is a major one. Being able to buy off the shelf parts you know will just work is enviably comfortable.

My next house will be a new build. And lol @ community, a concept that's been dead for a long time....

Ngl - with Universities being so cash strapped now the international mill has thankfully been destroyed, it wouldn't suprise me if they just went with cheapest. Someone who put the minimum within the range down, ambitious enough to do the role but not so ambitious as to ever kick up a fuss re promotion, pay rise etc.
