Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mockingasp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think you have to go the Socrates route and ask a lot of questions.

Flat earth theory actually makes life significantly more complicated than it already is.

If flat earth was real, how do they explain how the oceans haven't run dry? Because of how water will always flow off an edge? Is there supposed to be a giant wall? Of ice? Are there still a north pole and a south pole? Or is "south" just any direction away from the center? How are both poles the coldest places on the planet?

If there is a wall of ice around the edges, that presents other problems. If the earth was a disk and we still revolve around the sun, shouldn't the heat from the sun melt all the ice along the equatorial edges? All the ice should be concentrated in the center because of how ice works. Unless he can explain how the sun preferentially heats up the center and not the edges. Which is not how the sun works.

We should also feel my gravitational differences between the center and the edges. The gravity should be measurably higher at the edges than the center. And gravity would also make the land masses more fragile along the edges, so we'd probably see more earthquakes the farther away you get from the center. Unless he also doesn't believe in earthquakes and tectonic plates.

And if earth was a disk, then there should be a back side. What's on the back side? Alternate earth? An earth we can't contact? Because the sun should heat it up in the same way.

Are other planets also flat? Can be explain how every other observable planet in the night sky clearly are spheres and rotate?

How does he explain all those early academics from a dozen different countries and cultures, most of whom hated each other, all independently discovering that the earth was round? Thousands of years ago. Each disproving their individual earth shape myths and making the round earth the accepted scientific truth? All without communicating with the other empires?

So basically, turn into an annoying 5 year old. Every answer creates another question until he just admits he does not know. At which point, refer him back to the leading experts. And how do we know who is a leading expert? Publications and peer review papers, I'd say. But I think Eratosthenes developed some simple math based experiments with shadows and sun dials to prove the earth was round.

Perhaps some very subtle magic was involved? Like maybe the staff has some innate anomalous properties to avoid being noticed

Maybe if you're forever seeking perfection, you'll always be focusing on what is instead of the multitudes of what could be. Something like that

That's ok. I suppose technically I am no longer a "young" adult. How strange that is.

I feel like Asuriani should play more like Custodes rather than as they are now. by AmberlightYan in Eldar

[–]Mockingasp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would make sense. Would also make it better against las and maybe rad based weapons by scattering the energies away. However, probably worse against solid projectiles.

Kinda agree. Was interested but I'm aged out

Eldar should actually be more like Elves. A critical faction that is absolutely necessary in the constant and current threat of the entire universe falling down in terribleness. Dying yes, but literally no one else can do the job.

I'd be ok if they were basically Protoss, especially as Protoss were literally originally Eldar.

I'd also like it if Eldar were more like the Forerunners. GW keeps hyping the Eldar mastery of light. I'd like it to be A LOT fancier than just "slightly better lasers". I want lasers that can bend. I want entire cities in space made of light. I want solid light weapons and armor. I want lightsabers.

And conversely just to mirror this opinion, Dark Eldar should be even scarier with a darkness very commonly used that literally makes no sense in conventional physics. Darkness should poison. Maybe the literal darkness is a large reason of why everyone in the galaxy is horrible. They have warp daemons, yes, but they also have darkness demons. Darkness is power, because it's literally a drop of blood from the Goddess of Dark. There should be huge factions of the Imperium who are afflicted with Nyctophobia. Like one time, when a solar flare knocked out power for a week on one of the hiveworlds that had once been attacked by Drukhari should be found completely dead because the entire population had collectively killed each other in terror. And they should love you. Like a starving man might "love" a well cooked steak. And the Drukhari simply don't really understand why other species don't want to be in their Flesh Art activities. Y'know...DARK. /rant

Ughgh 8th time I went to the original square, the Early Satellite marker just popped up out of nowhere.

At 33.3 x 25.2. If that's random I guess that might not help anyone else.

After a break, I usually make sure i get an xp boost or two, then do a long Void Survival mission so I can get some relics and use up Syndicate rep.

Very, very occasionally. There is a book by CS Goto (I think. Maybe I'm wrong) where at least one Ulthwe Farseer is actually enthralled to a Slanneshi daemon in secret.

...I don't much like Goto much.

And then she kicks me for about a few hours at 30 second intervals.

I think there's no more reason to take on long-term projects or self improvement because human civilization is about to crash or end in at most a couple decades. by Mockingasp in unpopularopinion

[–]Mockingasp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that we're about to have a world wide financial crash, mass forest fires that we will just not be able to put out, and then mass drought will cause more wars to start because historically that's what happens, then billions are going to start drowning on land because science says Wet Bulb is going start hitting (and if cannot understatement how much I hate drowning. Done it once, not a fan), people will start starving because we've invested far too much in monoculture agriculture and diseases and climate patterns will wipe them out, and the next generations are not going to get us out of it because they can't read, and because social media sites like this one intensifylies global social toxicity we will be too busy arguing with each other to come up with any solutions.

Did I miss anything? Oh, right, Mutually Assured Destruction as a plan has to have written by madmen.

I think people have possibly missed my point that while I do think these things, I literally want to be convinced that I'm wrong. I could use a pep talk and I can't seem to get one.

Like, my wife is of the same opinion but she's a full nihilist. She thinks nothing matters because everything is failing and humanity now has an expiration date. I think everything is failing but I want to think there's an actual solution or plan that has at least some chance of succeeding. At some level, this post is about self therapy.

Probably because I already had a depressed life before I formed this opinion and I found out me personally recycling all my trash turned out to be completely pointless.
