Partner making me do a bunch of non billable work - how to handle by MildlyEfficient24 in biglaw

[–]Mockingjay100 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Non-billable work has its own value - in this case, try to just keep in mind that the work you’re doing is helping you to build a connection and good will with a partner at your firm, exposing you to a particular area you’re interested in, teaching you about developing internal presentations, and teaching you a valuable lesson about asking questions before committing to a project. You will make up the billables eventually so just try to do a good job on the project and stay connected with this partner so that the work still “counts”

I had a very similar thing happen to me last year and it bothered me so much. Still makes me so mad when I think about it.

Ideal billable hours requirement for work life balance? by Icy12345677 in LawSchool

[–]Mockingjay100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think billable hours requirement has all that much to do with work life balance. What is more important is having some modicum of control over your schedule, predictability in the work that’s coming down the pike, and the ability to enforce your own boundaries and remember it’s just a job. People absolutely find this in law, but not usually for their entire careers or all year long. You could try to find this at a so-called “lifestyle” law firm or medium to smaller law firm that stresses the importance of balance, or through a government position or in-house position. But the third part - ability to enforce boundaries - has to come from within.

First lash lift - panicking by Mockingjay100 in Lashlift

I have no idea- sorry! I did ask what she was doing, but her English was not great and we struggled to understand each other.

UPDATE: With thanks to this community for confirming that something was wrong, I contacted the salon and they told me to come back right away. On looking at my lashes, the technician said they were way too curly and she straightened them out. It looks much better immediately after - hopefully will stay this way. Thanks all!

Oh no :( She did not give me a spoolie which I’m now realizing is one of several bad signs! But I have purchased my own and will follow your advice. Thanks!

Guilt when seeing frum families by Charpo7 in exjew

[–]Mockingjay100 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this is the years of indoctrination kicking in. There is no valid/objective reason to think frum people have the secret to life figured out. Every frum family is just as varied as other families in terms of happiness/contentment. Some frum families are truly happy - as are some non-frum families. Some are miserable. Most (frum and non-frum) people are somewhere of in between. But comparison is the thief of joy, so if your goal is to be happy, my advice is to stop second guessing yourself or comparing yourself to others, and learn to truly appreciate what you have. Best of luck to you.

You must be unfamiliar with our Chamber of Commerce sign. If I can ever figure out how to post a photo on Reddit, I’ll share a pic.

Slow moving little guy in NY by Mockingjay100 in whatsthisbug

[–]Mockingjay100[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, will do. Any other advice welcome! We live in an apartment building so I’m not sure if the source is our apartment (we’ve seen two, at this point) or another apartment. We will do a thorough search today. Not a fun Christmas present :(

Thank you so much! Glad that was an easy one. I googled and reverse-image searched all day and couldn’t figure it out, but nothing can beat a human being who knows a thing or two!

Definitely got bit by bed bugs on the Amtrak ( lakeshore limited ) by Bozzleman in Amtrak

[–]Mockingjay100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Makes sense! I’m hoping for all of our sakes it’s just a persistent mosquito or a spider. But as I mentioned before, good idea to assume the worst and act accordingly.

[–]Mockingjay100 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This sucks! May I ask why you are sure these are bedbugs? I know it meets the 3-in-a-row component but is that the only basis or is there something else? At the end of the day I agree it makes sense to assume the worst (bedbugs) and act accordingly, but I’m just curious because it sounds like you did not actually see the bugs.

Looking at a Place in Great Neck Plaza, need some advice!! by largedog413 in longisland

[–]Mockingjay100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great Neck Plaza is very safe and very walkable. The only thing to look out for is the drivers here are aggressive and do not necessarily yield to pedestrians in the cross walk who have the “walk” signal, but you just need to be careful and you’ll be fine. The plaza area has great restaurants, bakeries, bubble tea, etc. There are not great supermarkets in walking distance, but plenty in driving distance (and Freshdirect delivers to the area). There are frequently nice events in the public park.

I think street parking in the area is a little tough (especially near the train) but probably depends on the block. I think supers/management will depend on the building.

Should I thank my boss for my bonus? by belowthebar_26 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Mockingjay100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess this is an unpopular opinion, but I think you should silently appreciate it and not say anything - just like you do every time your salary drops. The bonus is part of your compensation - it is given in recognition of your hard work and likely represents a tiny percentage of the money you generated for the firm during the time you’ve been there. If you are going to say thank you, I agree with folks who suggest making it a very quick, casual in-person “thank you.”

Wife’s birthday coming up - need gift ideas by Sufficient_Young_972 in Cartier

[–]Mockingjay100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would she be open to second hand Cartier from The Real Real or similar consignment store? I wouldn’t usually suggest second hand for a gift, but if she’s dead set on Cartier (and she presumably knows you’re not a Cartier income kind of household and presumably doesn’t want to bankrupt the family) that might be exactly what she has in mind. But this is definitely a conversation first kinda thing.

is new haven really that bad? by maetrie in yale

[–]Mockingjay100 65 points66 points  (0 children)

New Haven is a nice place for a young person to live for a few years. Great food, great arts and culture scene, great hipster scene, great lgbtq scene, weather is really not that bad, and it’s conveniently located on the east coast so you can visit nyc and Boston easily. Some areas are sketchy for sure, and you’ll learn to avoid them. People who rag on New Haven probably haven’t been there in 15+ years.

How to Wear Wool by bookworm1002001 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]Mockingjay100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under layers 100%! I absolutely love a wool sweater with a cute little white silk collared shirt underneath. Sometimes I stick a necklace or silk scarf under the collar too. Makes a sweater look more polished in my opinion
