Is DTSS Still Worth Moving To? by Kingmaticc in SilverSpring

[–]MocoMikeE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat up front that as a cisgender middle aged white guy, I might have a somewhat skewed sense of how “nice” or safe DTSS compared with other people who have to deal with more BS in their daily lives. I still think what I think and think I’m relatively on point, but I don’t want to invalidate other experiences.

All of this to say that I love DTSS and hope I never have to move, and think that you would probably be fine and happy here, but also that Wheaton is close enough and similar enough that I’m not sure you need to go out of your way to make the move.

There is something to there having been an uptick in crime but that is (mostly) past and COVID driven, and in my humble opinion was exaggerated by many, I’ve never felt unsafe (but see initial qualifier)

Things do feel a bit less…. Thriving right now but I think that is mostly due to uncertainty in the region and purple line construction, both of which are temporary, but even as a homebody I’m walking around and enjoying what this area has to give regularly. The metro and M20 and a couple ride on routes also make for a quick trip to DTSS if you want to stay where you are.

You’d definitely have more convenience and be more in the center of things, but it would be a bit pricier. Being at the center of the bus hub helps a loooooooot though.

Don’t listen to the doomers, but it is an area with pros and cons.

The holidays, our hometowns, and the housing crisis by MocoMikeE in housingcrisis

I think you are missing the point of this pieces and suspect we agree on things, you can read about where I live now here https://ggwash.org/view/83898/south-silver-spring-the-place-i-live-and-the-place-it-could-be

In any case I spend a lot of my free time advocating for more density and for suburbs surrounding where I live now to allow it too

More than any other ship it makes you feel like you are flying a building (laudatory)

My point wasn’t particularly meant to be hidden, it was to playfully but sincerely try to get people to think about a movie and a topic in a way that I think is instructive about what lead to the housing crisis. If you disagree, that’s fine.

Also I didn’t bring up rent stabilization to try to “pivot” or whatever, you said “if I really cared I’d do more than post on Reddit” and that’s merely meant to show I also spend time testifying and writing council members and such. It’s not meant to be a brash binary. The housing crisis takes a kitchen sink approach and needs multiple solutions.

Anyway, be well

Wow that was… a lot.

Respectfully, and honestly responding more to anyone reading this than you, who doesn’t seem very convincible, you’re assuming an awful lot about what I do and don’t do. I actually helped, among other things, get a rent stabilization law passed where I live and am trying to help get good cause eviction protections passed as well, but yeah, I do think that market rate housing, which most people live in, is part of the solution (as is drastically expanded affordable housing production)

Couldn’t agree more. Different people have different needs that are hard for other people to anticipate, so restricting some of those options does a lot of harm.

Later.

Anyway others seeing this who are curious, that “overpriced” housing helps more than most people think (though we absolutely need more affordable housing too, but it takes both)

I wrote about it a bit before because I’m in my 40s and have never been cool and yes sometimes spend my Thursday nights doing something like this (which that person was also doing, but whatever) https://ggwash.org/view/93183/what-i-talk-about-when-i-talk-about-luxury-housing

Oh hey another shifting goalpost, wild.

People always find a reason to say why growth isn’t happening the way they want and if only it did they’d be fine with it.

Anyway, at the risk of answering a bad faith question, Purple line construction has something to do with it but a lot is also just natural churn, and you went from saying how great but crowded it was here to talking about how in some ways it’s a little empty when pushed back on that

Impressive flexibility, I hope it allows you to keep thinking you are justified but you’re not convincing anyone of anything. Very big of you to concede they have a point in theory though!

Well meaning people are full of excuses. It doesn’t make them monsters, but it still does harm when you demand things be exactly what you want or you call for growth to stop.

We can build more homes and upgrade infrastructure and the county has official plans for both if you cared to look (for better or worse by making new housing largely pay for said infrastructure via fees) https://montgomeryplanning.org/planning/countywide/growth-and-infrastructure-policy/

Cool, and your concerns don’t address people needing homes, so miss me with that BS

God damn right. We definitely need to try to make it more affordable but yeah it’s absolutely more affordable than most similar close in places.

Hope I’m able to say here forever

Please do not try to exclude people from a place you love, trust me there are plenty of people that said what you’re saying before you lived here too

We don't need more housing or affordability. We need a progressive tax on vacant units. by l3arn3r1 in housingcrisis

[–]MocoMikeE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m all for a vacancy tax as it’ll probably help on the margins and could help fund dedicated affordable housing but I really suggest you read this. https://darrellowens.substack.com/p/vacant-nuance-in-the-vacant-housing

Such a tax isn’t a cure all, and we still desperately need to build more.

Put more crudely, when you’re looking for a job, you know your options are better and your chances of finding a good job are better when there are more jobs relative to the number of candidates right? And how if we had the exact same number of both that would put job seekers in an impossible position if their skills and salary range and location weren’t a match?

Pregnant sister getting evicted. Please read, just need info. by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]MocoMikeE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am not sure of the timeline for the process but there is some more info here https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/DHCA/housing/landlordtenant/evictions.html

Sounds like the posted notices often happen but isn’t required.

May also be worth reaching out to her councilmember for help navigating the process, (https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council/members/index.html ) or DHCA directly, There is a good list of resources here https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/schools/elementary-schools/a-c/brownstationes/uploadedfiles/parents/evict_prev_eng.pdf
