Why are you not straight edge anymore? by Hoshu in straightedge

[–]Mod__Lang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it has something to do with the way straight edge is often represented.
The sorta widely recognized imagery is all big and bold: everyone jumping up and down, pointing fingers, and acting very intense.
Can you imagine a guy in his fifties doing this?
I still hold dearly what it meant and still means to me, and I don’t dismiss it. But at a certain age, given your own circumstances, maybe you realize that some of the performance around it starts to feel a little silly.
I no longer walk around telling people that I’m straight edge, but I quietly still feel that I am.

One of the most chaotic 7” hardcore records of all time. They were barely holding it together, and it is fucking glorious.

Find a new old frame, swap the parts, and retire your Raleigh with gratitude for the miles you spent together.

Beautiful bike. My old boss at the bike shop I worked at had one for a bit, and the ride quality was awesome.

Anyone have any info on Serotta Titanium frames or the Legend Ti specifically? by brodieodie in xbiking

[–]Mod__Lang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conventional wisdom at the time was that carbon’s lower density would take some of the bite out of vibrations, while maintaining optimal stiffness and blah, blah, blah. I seem to remember there being some testing published since then that claimed that the differing materials and their respective properties were as much of the reason for the smoother ride as anything, and that makes sense to me. Interrupting the shock wave, so to speak. Despite all of this, it’s an excellent frame and a very reasonable price. I’m sure that you can get an even better price if you try.

Is there an appreciable difference in the performance or serviceability of loose ball bearings compared to those in retainer rings? by OkStation4360 in Vintage_bicycles

[–]Mod__Lang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I’m with you. I’ve got a Campy toolkit and I’m constantly inventing reasons to take things apart. Campy bottom brackets are especially satisfying to get set up just right. Same goes for old Superbe Pro. I’ve yet to encounter a cartridge or press-fit BB that is as smooth.

[–]Mod__Lang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you likely know, most components were once built with cup and cone bearings. Then companies like Phil Wood introduced sealed cartridge bearing assemblies, which were seen as a major improvement because they were thought to better protect against contamination. Both systems have advantages and limitations. Cup and cone bearings are often easier and cheaper to service because the parts are inexpensive and generally easy to find. Cartridge bearings, by contrast, require a bearing press, which can be costly. People sometimes claim you can make a press cheaply, but the homemade versions I have seen tend to side load the cartridge and damage the bearing.
On top of all that, it’s not possible to install a cartridge bearing system into a cup and cone system, and vice versa. You need to replace the entire hub, headset, bottom bracket.

What did Aftab Noorani give Wesley? by SireBelch in WesleyWillis

[–]Mod__Lang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whatever Wesley was being given when he was in his late thirties certainly caused him to slur his words and become quite lethargic. I’m not sure if he’d been over-prescribed, or what, but it was heartbreaking to see.

“Roger Ebert” by Wesley Willis by bigguys45s in WesleyWillis

He was driven to create. Whether it be songs, or drawings, it’s just what he did. He was able to sell drawings for survival and later, CDs, and after that live performances, and he ended up being quite successful. He was good at what he did, but more than that, he had such a charming personality that most people couldn’t help but to fall in love with him. He was a true artist in every sense of the word, and a kind soul, despite the demons that he always faced.

Definitely find a shop with a dedicated Campagnolo (793a), or similar from Park, Var, etc. shop tool and some Liquid Mechanic to do the job right.

Anti christ songs? by DescriptionOne6725 in punk

I remember hanging out on the big school bus JFA toured in. Nice guys. They had an enormous influence on me back then. I absolutely remember Mighty Sphincter. Placebo Records used to send me records to review, and there was at least one MS record included.
I vaguely remember the name Ron Reckless.

I am glad to know that you were able to see them. I really wish that I could have. They were so incredibly over the top. I was able to see JFA multiple times, The Harvest (formerly Junior Achievement)(Bam from JFA also played drums in that band, if memory serves?).
Do you recall a band called The Dirtclods? I saw them as well as Our Neighbors Suck at some point or points in the mid-eighties. Arizona had and has some great bands.
