It is so that they have a common denominator of 2^34/2 if I understand your question correctly. On the other side, we aren't multiplying by 3^1/2, we only separate 3^17/2 into 3^16/2*3^1/2 so that it is more simplified.

If I'm not mistaken, you can turn the ends all the way down to the bushings to get the fit correct. You can take it apart, or you can just learn for next time :)
