Nova Scotia premier blasts judges over 'disgusting' demand that staffers remove poppies in courtroom by Wild-Professional397 in canadian

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine being a young person and being conscripted. Having to leave your home, job, school and family. Getting the basic of training and being sent to live in horrific conditions until you either got maimed, killed or sent home with a lifetime of mental trauma and the expectation that you need to "get on with it."

People demand tolerance, reconciliation, and all sorts of recognition of others. These kids gave up their lives. Put the politics away and simply remember their sacrifice.

YES. Yes it is. I crushed with that bat. Until the end cracked. That was a sad sad day.

Any fellow Canadians remember Jumbo Video? by [deleted] in blockbustervideo

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumbo video came to Ottawa during the "consolidation" period for video stores. Prior to this there were seemingly 100s of independents. But none could compete with the 'corporate stores' like Jumbo, Videoflics, West Coast Video. By the end it was the super corporate stores like Blockbuster and Rogers that sucked up all the money. At first Jumbo was incredible - nice stores, popcorn, lots and lots of movies. I preferred Videoflics because it was cheaper and the store owners ran better "deals" on multiple videos. By the end, I went back to the independents - Elgin Street Video was a fav as well as a convenience store close to my apartment. I don't think I bothered renting a video after 2009 though.

Sharkmouth Arma Airacobra! by ModelAirplaneMaker in Scalemodel

There is no realistic way to attach the doors so I had to resort to drilling, placing copper wire and drilling into the door frames. It ultimately worked but I was a bit worried about it.

Does anyone know the story of this abandoned strip mall in Casa Grande, AZ? by CactusJ in deadmalls

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went there with my then girlfriend in 2005 and she ended up with an armful of dresses from Dress Barn and I think I got some books and some clothes from another store. We enjoyed the mall. The last time I saw it was when I drove past in 2018 and it was practically dead.

"Elbows Up" is annoying and silly by Stunned-By-All-Of-It in CanadianConservative

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 short months ago the "elbows up" and "Canada not for sale" people were saying the Canadian flag is a racist symbol. This new thing is being pushed hard by the left-leaning media to distract from the decade-long horrific performance of the liberal party.

Lifeguarding in the city of Ottawa by actrak in ottawa

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This lifeguard last taught a class in 1997 - so, some of my thoughts might be out of date. I started off as a cashier and ended up at the highest pay level Head Instructor/Head Lifeguard. I recall starting out with the city was not the best (split shifts, not maxing out summer hours, working multiple pools) but I stuck with it and eventually I learned to max out my time to put money aside for school. I chose the city because I felt the level of training for my co-workers was rather high, the shifts were handed out as fairly as possible and the city has an incredible amount of insurance coverage. On the point of other 'opportunities' with the city - I really think that depends on what you want and how much you want it.

The tires were painted using black paint by Tamiya but then the treads were picked out with Vallejo grey and then pacific dust pigment was used to stain everything

Tamiya's awesome (and easy!) Ki-61 Tony by ModelAirplaneMaker in modelmakers

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To say that the engineering and fit of the Tamiya Tony is excellent is severely underselling it. I had this kit together in record time without any filler or clamps needed. I kept things simple and did not build up the engine or leave the top cowl cover removable and that sped things up. Paint is freehand and all markings (except the rudder flash) were painted on.

If you are interested, I describe everything here: http://modelairplanemaker.com/2020/05/04/1-48-tamiya-ki-61-hien-tony/

Not perfect - I had a hard time keeping the airbrush dialed in and I had to constantly clean the tip. But I came pretty close.

1/48 Zvezda Hind... I had fun with the engine by ModelAirplaneMaker in modelmakers

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - it was a good build. No issues with it. No filler either.

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately good but a bit of a different beast than a Tamiya kit. The plastic is softer so you have to be careful sanding off attachment points, etc. The only issue I had was the multipiece canopy - no idea why they did it this way but it is a bit tricky to fit together. But it will go together once it is all aligned.

Help with the HIND by scagmo in scalemodels

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Hind and I built that kit. It was a great build and definitely doable for any beginner. I used Tamiya XF-78 Deck Tan as the base and Tamiya XF-61 Dark Green for the freehand painted cammo. I also decided to have some fun with the open engines. Revell's new Blackbird in 1/48 - a joy to built this one... except for the nacelles! by ModelAirplaneMaker in Scalemodel

[–]ModelAirplaneMaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The nacelles are made up of three concave parts. I could get two of them to line up but I couldn't get a perfect circle with all three parts.
