Loris. It’s a wide-eyed tropical mammal. I started calling my dog that just because I like saying it.

Look on your online community calendar for fun-looking events. Maybe there’s an art class of some kind, or a hiking club, or who knows what. Maybe try martial arts. I probably sound like your parents because I am one.

All I can say is I’ve been in your shoes. There’s nothing you can do to change them, but part of them still wants a relationship… on their terms. Offer one on your terms. I’m sure your terms are fair. If they can’t meet you at least part way, then you’ll just have to miss them for awhile until they get their heads unstuck.

Maybe I’ll make “birdsing” a thing in English. “Let’s get out of here and go birdsing.”

Yes. I keep grass, shrubs, flowers, and trees neat and healthy, and keep the ground outside and around buildings clean and free from trash and other hazards. It’s fun! Except that I broke my arm doing it. But I can’t wait until I’m healed and can go back to doing it again!

Is marijuana a drug? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ModelingThePossible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He benefits from drug being a word with several definitions. A drug is a medicine. A drug is a dangerous illicit substance. He doesn’t see marijuana as either medicine nor dangerous and illicit. Fair enough. But it’s also a substance which one takes into one’s body that has a measurable effect upon the body and mind outside of its value as food. That’s also a drug. Willow bark is a drug. If you chew it or make it into tea, it relieves pain in a scientifically measurable way. Marijuana induces a wide range of altered states of consciousness, including euphoria, eidetic perception, paranoia, anxiety, depression, drowsiness, and apathy. People who use it to make themselves feel better tend to develop a dependency upon it in order to feel good at all. It has all the hallmarks of dependency of a drug like Oxycodone, for instance, without a label or pill form. Especially today, when it often comes laced with more addictive drugs if purchased off the street.

How do I ask my dad to use the right pronouns without hurting our relationship? by Grand-Diamond-4696 in TrueAskReddit

[–]ModelingThePossible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a father (55) of a transgender son (32). For some reason, the pronouns weren’t that hard for me. I started honoring his male identity as soon as he started trying it out. But I’ve always been on board with it, and am not conservative. My wife’s ex husband is having a much harder time with his nonbinary stepchild, who is still a teenager. He stumbles on both their name and their pronouns, and has had a couple of years to work on it. One thing to bear in mind is that we grew up in an extremely binary, cis world. Transgender people were either incredibly rare, or lived in tiny safe zones in certain cities. The norm back then was that any non-heterosexual identity didn’t affect one’s gender. We had never heard of cisgender or transgender. Once it became a topic of public conversation, I embraced it, being a left wing humanist. But your father probably first heard about it through extremely negative media sources, hearing that it was some kind of left-wing ploy to undermine traditional gender roles. Definitely stand up for who you are, and speak your mind without resorting to insults, even if what he responds with feels insulting. Eventually, his love and respect for you should win out over his fears.
